Chapter 1

"Ev, there's an attack on the north border!" My beta, Penelope said as she burst into my office.

"Shit," I swore in frustration as I immediately dropped all the files in my hand before following Pen out of my office in the packhouse and sprinting out of the front door.

Not wasting a second behind my clothing, I shifted mid-run and heard the cracking of my bones as I transformed into my wolf and ripped my clothing into pieces that fell around me.

Penelope followed my lead as she shifted into her auburn colored wolf.

My pure white fur was brushed back by the wind as I ran through the woods.

I released a howl to inform the others that I was on my way as I zoomed past trees and leaped over fallen branches.

The leaves of the forest floor crunched beneath my paws and birds were startled as they flew out of the trees above my head.

As I bounded towards the north of our pack territory, I caught the distinct scent of rogues.

However, before I could even make it to where I heard my border patrol fighting, I heard the loud pounding of paws on my right.

'Go help the others.' I commanded Pen via mind link.

'But Alph-'

'Go!' I rushed her away since the pack needed more help than me.

As she reluctantly sprinted away, I made a swift turn to see a gray wolf covered in mud leaping for me. I quickly ducked and propelled my body forward so that he landed behind instead of on me.

I wasted no time in turning back to face him as he snarled at me and we began circling each other.

He slowly passed his slimy tongue over his canines before he leaped in for another attack. He moved faster this time and went for my front left leg.

As he pierced the skin and tugged on my leg, I went down.

My face hit the dirt floor as blood seeped out of my wound.

I kept my head down, allowing him to believe that I was in more pain than I felt.

These misogynistic rogues usually underestimated me because I was a rare female Alpha.

Joke's on them.

He released my leg and moved his canines towards my neck but at that moment, I used my wolf head and knocked it into his jaw which sent him staggering back.

Using his current disoriented position to my advantage, I raised to my full height. As I applied pressure to my foot, it stung but I quickly pounced on the unsuspecting rogue.

I didn't hesitate to bury my canines into the jugular vein on his neck.

He tried to put up a fight as he struggled and whimpered against my body but as he bleeds out, his body became limp.

Once I was sure his heartbeat stopped, I shoved his body away from my own before I ran towards the field where border patrol was fighting off more rogues.

My eyes quickly took a count of how many rogues remained.

Five rogues remained fighting three pack members who weren't injured. I snuck up behind one as my teeth grabbed onto her tail. I pulled the fur and yanked her body down before I moved atop her and asserted my dominance.

I held her body down and allowed her a chance to yield but unsurprisingly she fought beneath me.

She growled at me and I knew it was her way of saying that she rather death over being chained up and interrogated.

Taking that as my cue to end her life, I pierced the skin on her shoulder and sunk my canines deep enough to feel her bone glide against the pointy edge of my teeth.

As her life faded away, I spotted two of my pack members handling two rogues while Penelope was facing off with the other two rogues.

The larger of the two turned to face me with a sickening wolf smile. His odor was way more pungent than that of any other rogue that I've encountered today.

He stayed put as he measured my movements and I patiently waited for him to make the first move.

Which he did, but I mistakenly moved too fast.

He moved his two front legs as if he was about to pounce and I stupidly lowered my body and moved forward only to realize that he had not moved an inch.

That meant he was now standing above me as he bared his canines to me which appeared to be covered in a substance.

He wasted no time in sinking his teeth in my left shoulder blade.

The burning pain that emanated from the bleeding wound wasn't like an ordinary bite. It felt like what I imagined a silver bullet being buried within me would feel like.

Immense, torturous pain.

I knew exactly what the substance was that covered his teeth. It was silver berry.

A feral growl erupts from my throat which gave away just how much it pained.

The rogue released my shoulder and from the look in his eyes, I could tell that he was pleased with himself and that his objective was to torture me further.

Unluckily for me, silver berry was immensely painful and prevented our wolves from healing.

I sent a harsh growl to him and he didn't take to kindly to it by grabbing my already injured front left leg and nipping a piece of my flesh off.

Fuck, that hurt like a bitch.

My wolf was whimpering from the pain but this asshole was about to die.

He gave me a bloody smile but before he could sink his silver berry fangs into me again, I rolled over to the right as Penelope pushed his body to the ground where I was previously laying. I bared my fangs and sunk it into his furry side before he could get up.

His blood and the mud covering his fur all hit my taste buds as I sunk my teeth further and he whimpered out in pain. I released him to allow his blood to flow out but he unsurprisingly got up to face both Penelope and me.

I was becoming a bit unstable from the blood loss and pain which he could see as he went to attack Pen instead.

Not on my watch buster.

As his body knocked her to the ground, I quickly limped over and pushed his body off of her before sinking my teeth all over his body before he could get up.

I heard his breaths getting shallow as death neared him but to my surprise, he shifted to his human form.

The bloody bite marks that covered his body looked gruesome but he looked me dead in the eye as he smiled wickedly and coughed up some blood.

"You're going down, bitch. You will never be able to defeat us now." He laughed out as he lay there and coughed.

In my pain induced mind, I hadn't fully interpreted what he meant. And before I could ask any further questions... he died.

Penelope came up to me and gave me an unimpressed look because we all knew she was more than capable of handling the rogue herself.

I gave her a toothy grin as my body collapsed under me and I groaned in pain.

Silver berry is not fun kids.

Pen's expression turned to panic as she mind-linked for someone. From my peripheral vision, I saw my Gamma, Charlotte, running towards us with clothing.

Pen shifted and pulled on a t-shirt and jeans shorts while Char told me to shift.

I really didn't want to move but knew that it would be easier for them to get me out of here if I was in human form.

As I shifted back to my human form, Charlotte pulled a large t-shirt over my head and some loose boy shorts.

I assessed my wound and saw a small chunk of my flesh missing from my left hand as well as the blood running down from my shoulder.

Charlotte didn't hesitate to lift me into her arms as I groaned in pain and I thanked my lucky star that she was a werewolf and could actually hold my weight.

As she started to hurriedly walk us back to the pack, I saw a gray wolf bounding our way.

And I knew exactly who it was.

Finnick.

My idiot of a best friend.

Charlotte placed my bloody body on Finn's wolf.

"Get her to the infirmary Finn," Char told him and with a wolfie nod, he bounded back to the packhouse.

"She really meant, get me to the bar." I groaned as I tried to hang on tight to Finn's wolf and not pass out from the pain.

With my wounds not healing up, I could desperately do with a drink.

'Not funny Everette, you could have died.' He growled at me through our mind link.

Damn, he used my full name, he was really pissed.

"I was only trying to protect the pack," I grumbled.

'Don't give me that shit. I know you. Always trying to prove yourself because you're our first female Alpha. You know as well as everyone else that you've proven yourself a long time ago.' He said angrily.

"You don't know what you're talking about," I stated.

Finnick let out a snarl at my words, 'I know you better than you know yourself.'

"I don't need to be lectured Finn, I need a doctor," I whispered into the wind but I knew he heard me because his pace increased.

He was right. He did know me better than anyone else.

As we grew up, we just grew closer over time and if it wasn't for the dumb ass ritual, I'm sure the Moon Goddess would have paired us together.

He was my rock. My peanut butter to my jelly. The glue that stuck my pages together.

He was my Finn.

I laid my head on his fur and clutched his fur tighter in my hands as the excruciating pain took over my body in waves of torment.
