Briarâs POV
Itâs strange how life can shift overnight. Just yesterday, I thought Olivia was intimidating, distant, even untouchable in some ways. But after our date, something about her feels... closer, warmer. Her smiles seem softer now, and the memory of her laugh keeps playing in my head.
As I walk into college, I see Tara waving at me from our usual spot in the courtyard. Ethan is sitting next to her, as usual, scrolling through his phone. Taraâs eyes light up when she spots me, and I know Iâm not escaping her interrogation.
âLook whoâs glowing!â Tara exclaims the moment I sit down.
âIâm not glowing,â I mutter, pulling out my notebook, trying to appear busy.
âYou so are,â she insists, leaning closer. âSo? How was the date? You canât just leave me hanging like this!â
Ethan smirks. âI bet Olivia swept you off your feet.â
âShe didnât sweep me anywhere,â I grumble, though I canât stop the small smile that creeps onto my face.
âSee! Thatâs the smile!â Tara shouts, pointing at me. âTell me everything! Where did you go? What did she say? Did she look at you with those intense alpha eyes and make your heart race?â
I groan, burying my face in my hands. âWhy do I even tell you anything?â
âBecause you secretly love how invested I am in your love life,â she says smugly.
Ethan chuckles and nudges Tara. âAlright, let her breathe. Briar will share when sheâs ready.â
âThank you,â I say to him, grateful for the reprieve.
Tara huffs. âFine. But donât think Iâm letting you off the hook completely. Iâll get all the details eventually.â
We shift the conversation to our classes, and I feel myself relaxing. Itâs moments like theseâsitting with Tara and Ethan, laughing over nothingâthat make me grateful for their friendship.

Oliviaâs POV
Back at the packhouse, Iâm in my office, going over territory reports when Caleb walks in unannounced. He doesnât knock anymoreâitâs a privilege heâs earned as my beta and best friend.
âYou look... distracted,â he says, dropping into the chair across from my desk.
âIâm fine,â I reply automatically, not looking up from the papers in front of me.
âUh-huh,â he says, unconvinced. âLet me guessâBriar?â
I sigh, leaning back in my chair. âIs it that obvious?â
âPainfully,â he says with a grin. âSo, howâs it going with her? Did the date help?â
âIt went well,â I admit. âBetter than I expected, actually. She opened up a little, and I think... I think sheâs starting to trust me.â
âThatâs good,â Caleb says, nodding. âBut you know itâs going to take time, right? Sheâs young, and this whole mate bond thing is new to her.â
âI know,â I say, rubbing my temples. âI just want her to feel safe with me. Like she can rely on me completely.â
Caleb gives me a thoughtful look. âYouâre already doing a good job, Olivia. But maybe itâs time to show her more of yourself. Let her see you not just as her alpha, but as a personâsomeone she can laugh with, talk to, lean on.â
I nod, taking his words to heart. âYouâre right. Iâll figure something out.â
âYou always do,â he says with a small smile. âNow, stop stressing and come join the pack for dinner tonight. They miss seeing their alpha outside of meetings and patrols.â
I chuckle. âIâll think about it.â
Training Grounds
Later that evening, Briar and I meet at the training grounds for our usual session. Sheâs focused today, her moves sharper, more precise than ever. I can see the fire in her eyes, the determination that makes her who she is.
âYouâre improving,â I say as we take a break.
She grins, wiping sweat from her brow. âThanks. Iâve been practicing.â
We sit on the edge of the mat, the cool evening air brushing against our skin. Briar leans back on her hands, gazing up at the sky.
âItâs beautiful tonight,â she says softly.
âIt is,â I agree, though my eyes are on her, not the sky.
She catches me staring and raises an eyebrow. âWhat?â
âNothing,â I say quickly, looking away.
She smirks. âYouâre a terrible liar, Olivia.â
I laugh, shaking my head. âYouâre the second person to tell me that today.â
Briarâs expression softens, and for a moment, we sit in silence. Then, she speaks.
âWhy did you choose me?â she asks quietly.
I turn to her, surprised. âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, youâre this powerful alpha. You could have anyone you want. So why me?â
I take a deep breath, choosing my words carefully. âI didnât choose you, Briar. The bond did. But if I could choose, Iâd still choose you. Because youâre strong, kind, and unapologetically yourself. You challenge me in ways no one else ever has. And I know that, together, weâll be unstoppable.â
Briar looks at me, her eyes wide and filled with something I canât quite place. For the first time, she doesnât look away.
âThank you,â she whispers.
âFor what?â
âFor seeing me,â she says simply.
I smile, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. âIâll always see you, Briar.â
She blushes, looking down at her hands, but I can see the small smile on her lips.
