Episode 31: "An Unexpected Surprise"
Briar's POV
College life had been exciting, exhausting, and overwhelming all at once. Between classes, assignments, and adjusting to being away from home, I barely had time to think. But every single night, without fail, I made time for Olivia. Our video calls were the best part of my day. Even if I was tired, hearing her voice made everything feel right.
It had been a month since I left home, and tonight was no different. I was sitting on my dorm bed, waiting for Olivia to answer my call. Tara and Ethan were busy bickering over some ridiculous argument in the background.
âI swear to the moon, Ethan, if you eat my last protein bar again, Iâm going toââ
âOh, please, Tara. You left it in my drawer. Thatâs basically an invitation.â
I rolled my eyes at their antics just as Oliviaâs face appeared on my screen. My excitement instantly faded when I got a good look at her. She looked⦠tired. More than tired.
âLiv?â I frowned. âWhatâs wrong?â
She gave me a small smile, but it didnât reach her eyes. âNothing, sweetheart. Just a little exhausted, thatâs all.â
I narrowed my eyes. Olivia never admitted to feeling tired. She could be running on two hours of sleep, and sheâd still say she was fine.
âAre you sick?â I asked, already on edge.
She hesitated. âIâve been feeling a little off lately.â
âA little off? Olivia, you look like youâre about to pass out!â My voice rose in concern. Tara and Ethan immediately stopped arguing, their attention snapping to me.
âIâm fine, Briar,â Olivia insisted, but I wasnât having it.
âNo. Youâre not. Youâre going to see the pack doctor first thing tomorrow.â
She sighed. âBriar, itâs probably nothing.â
âI donât care. Go. Get checked. Please.â
She looked at me for a long moment before finally nodding. âAlright, alright. Iâll go.â
I exhaled in relief. âGood. Because if I find out youâre ignoring your health, I will drop everything and come home.â
She chuckled softly. âI believe you.â
But even after we ended the call, I couldnât shake the uneasy feeling in my chest.

Oliviaâs POV
I wasnât expecting anything serious. Really, I wasnât. I thought maybe I was just overworked, maybe my body was adjusting to Briar being gone.
I wasnât expecting the pack doctor to look at me with that expression.
âOliviaâ¦â she started carefully, as if she was worried Iâd shift into my wolf and tear apart the clinic.
âWhat?â My voice was sharp. I didnât like the way she was hesitating.
âYouâre pregnant.â
The words hit me like a truck. My brain completely blanked.
ââ¦What?â I blinked at her.
âYouâre pregnant,â she repeated, a soft smile forming. âCongratulations, Alpha.â
Pregnant.
With Briarâs baby.
The realization settled in, and suddenly, a wave of emotions crashed over me.
Shock. Disbelief. Joy. Fear.
I pressed a hand to my stomach, my heart pounding. A baby. Our baby.
A laughâhalf disbelieving, half exhilaratedâescaped me. âIâm pregnantâ¦â
The doctor nodded, smiling. âYou are. Youâre about six weeks along.â
Six weeks. That meant⦠I got pregnant right before Briar left for college.
The happiness in my chest was quickly joined by another emotionâworry.
How was I going to tell Briar? She had just started her new life, following her dreams. Would she feel trapped? Would she be upset?
My Briar was strong, but she was also young. Would she be ready for this?
The doctor squeezed my shoulder. âYouâre going to be an amazing mother, Olivia.â
I swallowed hard. âI hope so.â

Briar's POV
The next night, Olivia called me like usual, but something about her felt⦠different. She looked nervous. And Olivia never looked nervous.
âWhat happened?â I asked immediately. âDid you go to the doctor?â
She took a deep breath. âI did.â
âAnd?â
She hesitated, and my heart clenched.
âLiv, just tell me. Whatâs wrong?â
Then she said the words that changed everything.
âIâm pregnant.â
My brain completely stopped working.
ââ¦What?â
She exhaled shakily. âBriar, Iâm pregnant.â
I stared at her. My heartbeat was so loud I could barely hear anything else.
Our baby. Olivia was carrying our baby.
A mixture of emotions hit me all at onceâshock, excitement, terror.
I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. Olivia immediately misinterpreted my silence, her expression dimming.
âI know this is a lot,â she said softly. âAnd I donât expect you toââ
âLiv.â My voice was barely above a whisper. âAre you⦠Are you happy?â
She looked at me, really looked at me, and I saw the truth in her eyes before she even spoke. âYes.â
I let out a breath I hadnât realized I was holding. My lips curled into a small, wobbly smile. âThen Iâm happy too.â
She let out a laugh, a little watery. âYou sure?â
I swallowed hard, nodding. âItâs a lot to take in, but this is our baby. And I love you, Olivia. Nothing changes that.â
Her shoulders sagged in relief. âI love you too, Briar.â
I bit my lip. âBut⦠what are we going to do? Iâm here, and youâre there, andââ
âWeâll figure it out,â Olivia said firmly. âI donât want you giving up your dreams. I wonât let you.â
Tears pricked at my eyes. âBut I want to be there for you.â
âAnd you will be.â She smiled, placing a hand on her stomach. âWeâll do this together, no matter what.â
A knock sounded in my room, and Tara and Ethan peeked inside. âHey, are you doneââ Ethan stopped mid-sentence when he saw my face. âUh⦠whatâs wrong?â
I turned the phone so they could see Olivia.
âIâm pregnant,â Olivia said.
Tara and Ethan screamed.
âWHAT?!â Tara shrieked, practically tackling me onto the bed.
âYou guys are having a baby?!â Ethan shouted, looking at the screen in pure disbelief.
Calebâs voice suddenly chimed in from behind Olivia. âTook you long enough to tell them, Alpha.â
Olivia groaned. âYou told him?â
Caleb smirked. âYou think I wouldnât notice my Alpha acting weird? Come on.â
Tara looked at me with wide, excited eyes. âBriar. Briar. Youâre going to be a mom.â
I let out a breathless laugh, my heart pounding. âYeah. I guess I am.â
Ethan clapped his hands together. âOkay, I donât care what anyone says, we have to throw a party.â
Olivia groaned. âLetâs just get through the pregnancy first, you lunatics.â
I laughed, warmth blooming in my chest.
Our lives were changing, but one thing was certain.
No matter what, we would face it together.
