Chapter 5: Episode 5: The Awakening

My Young Mate ( GxG Intersex )Words: 6175

(Briar's POV)

The gentle hum of the car engine filled the air as Briar drove home from her first day at college. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm orange glow over the city streets. Her car, a sleek black convertible she'd saved up for years, was her pride and joy. She loved the way it roared to life when she hit the gas and how the wind played with her hair when the top was down.

"You're the only one who gets me," she murmured, patting the dashboard affectionately.

The day had been overwhelming yet exciting. Meeting Tara and Ethan had been the highlight-there was something about them that felt... right. Comforting, even. Still, there was an uneasiness she couldn't shake, like a shadow lurking just beyond her vision.

As she pulled into the driveway of her new home, Briar spotted her mom standing by the window. Her dad's car was parked in the garage, a sign that dinner was likely ready.

---

At the dinner table, the atmosphere was warm but laced with an undertone of tension. Briar twirled her fork through her pasta as she recounted her day.

"Tara and Ethan seem cool. We hung out during lunch, and they showed me around. College doesn't seem so bad after all."

Her dad smiled, but his eyes carried a hint of worry. "That's good to hear, kiddo. Making friends is important."

Briar nodded but hesitated before continuing. "There's... something weird, though. I can't explain it. It's like... I don't know, my senses are sharper or something. I keep hearing things I shouldn't be able to hear and picking up on smells that don't make sense."

Her mom and dad exchanged a quick glance, their faces tense.

"Briar, honey," her mom began gently, setting her fork down. "There's something we need to talk about."

Briar frowned, her stomach tightening. "What is it? Did something happen?"

Her dad sighed, leaning forward. "It's about you, sweetheart. About who you are."

---

They explained it all-how they were werewolves, how they'd kept it a secret to protect her, and how she was starting to show signs of her true nature. Briar listened in stunned silence, her mind racing.

"Wait," she finally said, holding up a hand. "You're saying I'm a werewolf? Like, actual howling-at-the-moon werewolf?"

Her mom nodded, her expression soft but serious. "It's in your blood, Briar. You've always been special, and now that you're older, your instincts are waking up."

Briar's initial reaction was disbelief. "This has to be a joke. You've been watching too many horror movies."

Her dad reached across the table, his hand covering hers. "It's not a joke, Briar. I know it's a lot to take in, but you need to trust us. Things are going to change, and we'll be here to guide you through it."

Briar pulled her hand back, standing abruptly. "You kept this from me my whole life, and now you just expect me to accept it?"

Her mom's voice was calm but firm. "We did it to protect you. The world isn't always kind to people like us."

Briar shook her head, pacing the room. "This is insane. I don't even know who I am anymore."

Her wolf, dormant until now, stirred faintly in the back of her mind. It was a soft presence, almost comforting, but Briar wasn't ready to acknowledge it. She needed time to process everything.

"I need some air," she muttered, grabbing her jacket and storming out of the house.

---

That night, sleep eluded Briar. She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, her thoughts a chaotic mess. Her parents' words replayed over and over in her mind. Deep down, a part of her knew they were telling the truth-she could feel it in the way her body had been changing.

"What does this mean for me?" she whispered into the darkness.

There was no answer, only the soft rustle of leaves outside her window.

Shift to Olivia's POV

Olivia paced her office, her thoughts consumed by what Tara and Ethan had told her about Briar. She had known the moment they mentioned her name that Briar was the presence she'd felt-a presence that called to her wolf like nothing else ever had.

Tara and Ethan stood before her, their postures respectful but relaxed.

"You're sure she doesn't know what she is?" Olivia asked, her tone firm.

Tara nodded. "Positive. She's completely unaware, but she's starting to sense things."

Ethan added, "She's strong, Alpha. Even without knowing, she carries herself like she belongs."

Olivia's wolf, Lyra, growled softly. "She's ours. We need to protect her."

"Keep an eye on her," Olivia instructed. "Make sure she's safe, but don't reveal anything unless absolutely necessary. I'll decide when the time is right."

Tara hesitated. "Do you think she's your mate, Alpha?"

Olivia's gaze sharpened, but she didn't answer directly. "That's not your concern. Just do as I say."

Tara and Ethan exchanged a glance but nodded. "Understood."

As they left, Olivia sat back in her chair, her mind racing. The bond she felt toward Briar was undeniable, but how could she approach her without overwhelming her?

Lyra's voice broke through her thoughts. "She'll come to us when she's ready. Be patient."

Olivia exhaled deeply. "Patience isn't my strong suit, Lyra."

"Then it's time you learned," Lyra teased.

Shift to Briar's POV

The next morning, Briar woke with a sense of resolve. She wasn't sure what the day would bring, but she was determined to face it head-on.

Standing in front of the mirror, she tied her hair back and examined her reflection. Her sharp eyes stared back at her, and for the first time, she noticed a certain wildness in them-a spark she couldn't ignore.

As she drove to college, her car's engine roaring beneath her, Briar felt a strange mix of nerves and excitement. The unease from the previous night lingered, but she pushed it aside, focusing on the day ahead.

At college, Tara and Ethan greeted her warmly, their smiles putting her at ease. The day passed in a blur of lectures, conversations, and moments of laughter with her new friends. But through it all, Briar couldn't shake the feeling that her life was on the verge of something extraordinary.

And deep within her, her wolf stirred, waiting for the moment when everything would finally fall into place.
