TOUN SAT with her family for dinner in their mansion. The semester has ended and she was home to spend the short holiday with her parents and sister. However, she was not really happy to be home because she missed her life in school, her freedom, her coursemates, her friends, and her best friend. But most especially her boyfriend.
And there was also the fact that she had to lie to her parents. She hated that she had lied to their face. But she had no other choice.
It has been a month now since she knew about her pregnancy.
Nathaniel had been sweet and extra caring since she told him about the pregnancy. He makes sure to always visit her. He tried as much to do things to make her comfortable. And she can already predict that he will be an awesome father.
But the only problem they had was how she was going to tell her parents about the unplanned pregnancy.
She and Nathaniel had come up with different ways to tell her parents.
Nathaniel wanted to visit them and tell them about the baby himself but she and Tobi strongly refused.
Her parents never liked Nathaniel. They never approved of their relationship. They had humiliated him in the second year when they found out that they were dating.
Because of it, Nathaniel almost lost his scholarship due to her parents' influence and what they did to him. But fortunately, his influence in the union and among the lecturers had saved him.
Her parents were wealthy and she was raised in wealth. They wanted the very best for their children. And getting married to an equally rich man is what they dreamed of and wanted.
They don't want her to date a pauper. They believed he was just after her money, and body and was a bad influence.
However, it was not true. Nathaniel was a good guy and he loved her. His main wish was always to gain her parents' trust. He knew it would be hard, most especially after he had impregnated their daughter before getting married to her but he was willing to try.
He didn't want to give up. And he wished they could see how honest and how much he loved their daughter.
But in the end, there was no good way to tell her parents. She knew her parents so well and even if she hated to admit it, she knew nothing would change her father's mind about Nathaniel.
But she wasn't giving up on Nathaniel, and neither was she going to let her parents ruin Nathaniel the second time.
Reluctantly, Nathaniel had agreed to her plan. And the short holiday was the best time to carry out their plan.
"Your mom told me you want to talk to us," her father asked when they sat at the table to eat. "What is it you want to tell us?"
Toun smiled and then looked up at him. "Dad, I want to get a new house."
"A house?" her mother and sister chorused, looking up at her. "Why? Don't you have a hostel in school?"
Her parents never loved the idea of the hostel at first. They wanted her to have an apartment when she got into the university. It had taken a lot of pleading and convincing before they let her have a hostel as she wished. She had wanted to be free and be among different people.
"I don't want to live in a hostel anymore. Those girls are giving me problems." She shrugged innocently.
"Didn't we tell you that when you got in?" her mother said, giving her the 'we told you' look.
"I was young then, Mom. You can't blame me," she remarked with a pout.
"Isn't that too late? You are almost done. You will be going to law school soon," Eunice, Toun's younger sister stated, exasperatedly.
"Yeah, the more reason I have to change. And it is none of your business," Toun replied her sister angrily.
She and her sister aren't the best of siblings. And she watched her sister roll her eyes.
"You are not okay. Who is your mate here?"
"Toun!" her mother called.
That was one of the things that she didn't like about her parents. They never scold Eunice about her naughty attitude.
"It's her fault," she complained to her mother.
Before her mother could say anything, her father coughed and all eyes went to him.
"That's okay, Toun. And stop disrespecting your sister, Eunice," he warned the ladies in his usual hoarse and commanding tone.
Her father, Mr. Joseph then dropped his spoon quietly on his plate and he looked at his elder daughter. Toun stared at him without flinching. Then she muttered an apology. He said nothing in response.
"So you were talking about getting an apartment."
"Yes, daddy. I'm no longer comfortable with those girls at the hostel. I've been trying to hold it in till I am done with my course. But I can't. They have been jealous of me," she complained and she went on to add other things that weren't true just to convince her parents. She made a puppy face so it would convince her father better.
The man just nodded. She knew he would agree because he didn't like his daughter's suffering. He always wants the very best for them.
She remembered when she got into junior high and moved to her boarding school, he and her mother bought a lot of things even those things that the school was to provide for them. He bought a new bed for her and an imported small wardrobe and the teachers together with students started calling her Daddy Princess. To avoid envy she began to dash out some of her things to her friends.
"Where will it be?" he asked calmly.
"Close to the school," she replied. "I have checked out some wonderful places."
"Alright then. How much will it cost?" he asked as he brought his cup to his lip to sip from it.
She smiled to herself. She knew he would agree and she was very grateful to God that he didn't ask questions that would have made it hard to get him to do what she wanted.
"You are agreeing to her renting a house. She can't live alone. They are dangerous guys around," Mrs. Mopelola, her mother complained to her husband.
Toun fought the urge to roll her eyes. "I will be fine Mom. I'm not a baby, my best friend Tobi will visit," Toun assured her albeit exasperated.
She didn't want her mom to ruin her plan. The woman has a habit of doing that.
"Still..."
"She will be fine, Mommy. Stop worrying. You overreact," Eunice commented, her voice held a bit of irritation.
Toun gazed at her sister. It was the first time Eunice would be on her sister. And she was glad that her sister agreed with her for once.
They don't usually agree on a lot of things together. And they have different characters. But they both knew their mother's unpredictable, annoying, and overprotective character.
"They are right," Mr Joseph agreed, looking at his wife. And the woman shrugged without further protest and Toun let out a breath in relief. "So how much will it cost?"
"Five million," she answered.
The house doesn't cost up to that, but she has other plans on what to do with the money.
"Okay, I will send it to your account before you return to school," Mr. Joseph responded, wiping his mouth with the table towel.
Toun beamed and she smiled in gratitude and huge relief. The first step in her plan is already a success.
"Thanks, Dad. I love you," she exclaimed.
"Love you too."
"What about me? Will I not get anything? Toun is getting five million," Eunice complained, an angry pout morphed on her face.
"Are you jealous?" Toun sneered, rolling her eyes at her dramatic sister.
"What do you need?" Mr Joseph asked his younger daughter, ignoring his first daughter's comment.
They knew about the quiet and unspoken rivalry between their daughters, but they did little to nothing to change it. And it was already impossible to start mending the walls between them since they were now adults.
But he tried to make sure they were both satisfied not to cause more hatred.
Eunice smirked at her sister. "A new wardrobe."
"Fine," the older man agreed without blinking. "I will send it to your account too."
"Thank you, Daddy. You are the best," Eunice said with a sweet voice, smiling like a Cheshire cat.
The man simply nodded with his usual impassive look. He had never been the man that showed emotion.
He stood up and left the women at the table.
"Thanks, Dad. I love you," Toun said after her father before she turned to her sister who was making some silly noise with her spoon and plates. "Spoilt brat," Toun insulted her sister.
*****
"WOW!" TOUN exclaimed in excitement.
"What is it? Do you win a lottery? " Tobi asked her friend when she noticed her sudden movement.
"I asked my dad for some money three days ago to rent a house."
"A house?" Tobias queried with a confused expression. "Why do you need a house?"
"I'm pregnant Tobi and soon it would become obvious. I can't continue to stay in the hostel with the other girls," she told her like she was meant to know that.
"Have you told your..."
"Of course not. I didn't and I don't think I will," she replied with a sad voice. "They will never accept it. And I can't lose my baby." She touched her flat belly, rubbing it gently. "And Nathaniel. So I've decided not to tell them."
Then she opened up to her friends about what her final plans were.
"What you are planning is dangerous, girl. I'm worried about you and... your baby," Tobi said with concern.
"Thanks, but don't worry. I will be fine as long as I have Nathaniel. You are also free to come live with me. I will need it. "
"I will be there for sure." Tobi smiled.
******
Nathaniel had packed his luggage and his guitar and was ready to leave for school when his mother came in in her wheelchair. He had gone home to see his mother during the short break at school.
"I see you are ready to leave," she noted and he turned around to look at her. He smiled sadly at her.
He never got over what happened to her and the rest of his family. He still feels the pain in his heart whenever he sees her in the wheelchair.
He had lost his family in a fatal accident. His mother was the sole survivor even if she lost her spine and could not walk again.
"Yes," he replied.
"Won't you take your guitar?" she asked, glancing over at the guitar resting on the wall.
He followed her gaze and peered at the guitar case leaning on the wall beside his reading table.
He shook his head. "No. The string got broken yesterday. I will just take Daddy's."
She smiled proudly at him. "I'm sure he will be proud of you wherever he is."
Just a small smile formed on his face and his mother didn't fail to notice it. She had noticed how he seemed worried. So she decided to ask him before he left.
"Nathan, is something bothering you?" she asked. "What is it? You can tell me, son. I'm your mother."
He sighed and he stooped in front of his mother. "I know. There is actually something I want to tell you, Mom. I'm not supposed to be saying this now. I should have told you since I came back... but... I am not sure how you will receive the news."
"What is it? Just tell me." She urged him on.
"I hope you won't get angry Mom because I know you won't like what am about to say and I apologize in advance."
"What is it, Nathan? Just say it already."
"Mommy... Toun is pregnant with our child." He finally broke the news to her, looking at her face to see her reaction.
