Chapter 43: Chapter 42

Naina stood by the window, her hand gently resting on her growing belly. The city outside her apartment seemed to buzz with life, completely unaware of the storm swirling inside her. She could feel the twins moving—tiny reminders that despite everything, she wasn’t alone.

Six months pregnant. Six months of navigating this overwhelming journey , and now Rivaan wanted back in. It was almost laughable, the timing of it all. She didn’t know whether to feel relief or dread. Could he really be the man she needed him to be? The father her children deserved?

Her phone buzzed on the table, breaking her thoughts. She picked it up to see a text from her doctor.

Doctor: Hi Naina, just a reminder about your appointment tomorrow at 10 AM. Let me know if you need to reschedule.

Naina sighed, running a hand through her hair. Tomorrow’s appointment was crucial—her first ultrasound since the complications had started a few weeks ago. She hadn’t told Rivaan yet. How could she? After everything, she wasn’t sure she was ready to let him back into the most intimate parts of her life. But if something was wrong with the twins…

The doorbell rang, startling her. She wasn’t expecting anyone.

Naina opened the door to find her best friend, Meera ( cousin ), standing there, her arms full of groceries and a wide grin on her face.

“I brought food!” Meera announced, brushing past her and heading straight to the kitchen. “And don’t even try to tell me you’re not hungry. I know you’ve been surviving on takeout.”

Naina couldn’t help but smile as she followed her friend into the kitchen. Meera had been her rock through everything, from the moment she’d left Rivaan’s house to now.

“You’re a lifesaver,” Naina said, leaning against the counter as Meera unpacked the bags.

“That’s what I’m here for,” Meera replied, her eyes softening as she glanced at Naina’s belly. “How are you feeling? And don’t just tell me you’re fine.”

Naina hesitated, feeling the weight of everything press down on her again. “I don’t know. Rivaan came by earlier.”

Meera stopped mid-motion, her eyebrows shooting up. “Rivaan? What did he want?”

“He… apologized,” Naina said, her voice barely above a whisper. “He said he didn’t know about what his mother did, that he wants another chance.”

Meera sighed, shaking her head. “Of course, he does. But what do you want, Naina? That’s what matters.”

Naina bit her lip, her hand instinctively moving to her belly again. “I don’t know, Meera. I really don’t. Part of me wants to believe him, but the other part of me is terrified. What if he lets me down again? What if he can’t handle this?”

Meera reached out, taking Naina’s hand. “Listen, I know you love him. And maybe he really is sorry. But you have to protect yourself, and more importantly, your babies. Take your time. Don’t let him back in just because he’s saying all the right things.”

Naina nodded, appreciating Meera’s blunt honesty. “I know. I just… I’m scared. I’m scared of doing this alone, but I’m even more scared of letting him back in and getting hurt all over again.”

Meera squeezed her hand. “Whatever happens, I’m here. You’re not alone in this.”

The next morning, Naina sat in the waiting room of the clinic, her nerves on edge. She had barely slept the night before, her mind racing with what-ifs. What if something was wrong with the twins? What if the complications were more serious than she realized? She couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to them.

Her name was called, and she slowly stood, making her way into the exam room. The doctor greeted her with a warm smile, but Naina could only manage a weak one in return.

The ultrasound technician prepped her for the scan, and within moments, the screen came to life. Naina’s heart pounded as she stared at the two small figures on the screen—her babies.

“Everything looks good so far,” the doctor said, her tone reassuring. “We’re keeping an eye on a few things, but nothing too concerning right now.”

Naina released a breath she didn’t know she had been holding, relief flooding her body.

“Do you want to know the gender?” the doctor asked, smiling.

Naina hesitated. She had always imagined finding out the gender with Rivaan beside her, sharing in that moment. But things were different now. She was doing this alone.

“Yes,” she finally said, her voice steady. “I want to know.”

The doctor’s smile widened. “Congratulations, Naina. You’re having a boy and a girl.”

Tears welled up in Naina’s eyes as she stared at the screen, overwhelmed by the emotions crashing over her. A boy and a girl. Her heart swelled with love for the two tiny lives growing inside her.

But as the joy washed over her, so did the reality. Could she really do this alone? Could she be strong enough for them, even if Rivaan wasn’t by her side?

That evening, Rivaan sat in his office, staring at the ultrasound photos Naina had sent him. A boy and a girl. His chest tightened as he realized the magnitude of what he had almost lost. He had missed so much already, and the guilt weighed on him like a heavy cloak.

He had to prove to her, not just with words but with actions, that he was ready to step up. To be the man she and their children needed. His mind raced with ideas, ways to show her that he had changed. That he was committed.

But first, he had to confront the person who had caused all of this pain. His mother.

Naina sat on her bed that night, her hand resting on her belly. Her heart was full of love for her babies, but the uncertainty still lingered.

Could she give Rivaan another chance? Could she trust him again after everything?

As she lay back, closing her eyes, she whispered to herself, “I’ll protect you, both of you. No matter what.”

And with that, she knew that whatever happened, she would never be alone.
