The crisp winter morning brought a sense of calm to the Desai household. Siya was in the kitchen, humming softly as she prepared tea. She hadnât been expecting visitors, so when the doorbell rang, she wiped her hands and made her way to the door.
Standing there was Gauri, her closest friend, bundled up in a warm shawl, her cheeks flushed from the cold.
âGauri!â Siya exclaimed, pulling her friend into a warm hug. âWhat a surprise! Come in, come in!â
Gauri grinned, stepping into the house and rubbing her hands together to warm them. âI thought it was about time I came to see you. Youâve been hiding here for weeks, Mrs. Raghav Desai.â
Siya rolled her eyes, laughing. âDonât start with that âMrs. Desaiâ nonsense. You know how weird it still feels.â
They settled into the cozy living room, sipping tea and catching up on everything theyâd missed in each otherâs lives. Gauriâs laughter filled the air as Siya recounted her latest mishaps in learning to manage household duties.
âSiya,â Gauri began, her voice turning playful, âthereâs something I need to tell you.â
Siya raised an eyebrow. âThis sounds serious. Spill it!â
âWellâ¦â Gauri leaned forward, a mischievous glint in her eyes. âRudra and I are officially together.â
Siya gasped, a wide smile breaking across her face. âOh my God, Gauri! Finally! I was wondering when you two would stop dancing around each other.â
Gauri blushed, her smile shy but radiant. âIt just happened so naturally. Heâs been so sweet, Siya. As sweet as pastries. I couldnât resist sweetness.â
Siya grinned, leaning back against the couch. âAbout time. Youâve been pining for him since forever. Iâm so happy for you!â
Gauri gave her a playful nudge. âEnough about me. What about you and Raghav? Donât think I havenât noticed how close you two have gotten.â
Siyaâs cheeks turned pink as she fiddled with the edge of her shawl. âWhat about us? Weâre just⦠getting used to this whole situation.â
Gauri narrowed her eyes. âSiya, donât even try to dodge the question. Do you have feelings for him or not?â
Siya hesitated, then let out a soft sigh. âI do, Gauri. I love him. Butâ¦â
âBut?â Gauri pressed, leaning closer.
Siya looked away, her voice quieter now. âHeâs so focused on his dreams of becoming a cardiologist. I donât want to be a distraction for him. And then there are those letters to Noorie. I keep thinking heâs still holding onto something there.â
âSiya, thatâs not true,â Gauri said firmly. âRaghav cares about you. Anyone with eyes can see that.â
Siya smiled faintly. âMaybe. But Iâve decided I wonât say anything until the collegeâs award ceremony at the end of the year. Thatâs when all this âDeal 365â stuff will be behind us. He deserves to chase his dreams without me complicating things.â
Gauri reached out, squeezing Siyaâs hand. âYouâre overthinking, as always. But if thatâs what youâve decided, Iâll support you. Just promise me one thingâdonât hold back when the time comes.â
âI promise,â Siya said softly. âBut you have to promise me something too.â
âAnything.â
âDonât tell anyone about how I feel. Not even Rudra. Please.â
Gauri smiled knowingly. âYour secretâs safe with me, Mrs. Desai.â
Elsewhere at College
Raghav leaned against the wall outside the lecture hall, scrolling through his phone as Rudra walked up, slapping him on the back.
âHey, lover boy,â Rudra teased, a wide grin on his face.
Raghav frowned. âWhat now?â
âOh, nothing much. Just wondering if youâre ever going to confess your undying love for Siya or if youâre planning to wait until you both turn seventy.â
Raghav rolled his eyes. âYouâre insufferable, you know that?â
Rudra laughed. âIâm serious, though. Look at meâI laid out my life plan for Gauri. I told her everything: how I plan to marry her, our future home, and even the dog weâll adopt.â
âA dog?â Raghav asked, raising an eyebrow.
âYeah, a husky. Weâll name him Bruno. Anyway, this isnât about me. Itâs about you. So, whatâs the deal? Are you going to tell Siya how you feel, or do I need to rent a billboard?â
Raghav sighed, his expression softening. âI love her, Rudra. I really do. But I canât confess. Not now.â
Rudra tilted his head. âWhy not? Whatâs stopping you?â
âThis marriage was a compromise,â Raghav said, his voice serious. âI donât want Siya to think Iâm using this deal as an excuse to get closer to her. And what if she doesnât feel the same way? I donât want to ruin what weâve built. Itâs fragile, but itâs ours.â
Rudra nodded thoughtfully. âSo youâre waiting for this âDeal 365â to end before saying anything?â
âYes,â Raghav replied. âOnce the year is over, sheâll be free to choose. I donât want her to feel burdened by my feelings.â
Rudra clapped him on the shoulder. âYouâre a good guy, Raghav. But let me just say thisâsometimes, waiting too long can be just as bad as rushing in. Donât miss your chance.â
âI wonât,â Raghav said with a small smile. âBut in the meantime, I need a favor.â
âName it.â
âPromise me you wonât tell anyone about this. Not even Gauri. Siya deserves to hear it from me, when the time is right.â
Rudra placed a hand over his heart dramatically. âYour secretâs safe with me, Romeo.â
Somewhere in Parallel Promises
That evening, Siya sat by the window, her thoughts drifting to Raghav. Gauriâs words replayed in her mind, but she shook them off.
Meanwhile, at the college, Raghav stared at the starry sky, Rudraâs teasing smile flashing in his memory.
In unison, they whispered to their trusted confidants,
âPromise me you wonât say anything.â
Their friends, though amused, nodded solemnly. âI promise.â
