Dinner was coming to a close.
I sat quietly throughout the entire thing, speaking only when I was spoken to.
Leonâs family was a lively bunch. They talked and talked about everything and tried to include me in the conversation. That, of course, happened after they interrogated me about my life back in my old pack. Before I could have responded, Leon had hurriedly shut that down, stating that I had a bad experience and wasnât ready to talk about it.
I couldâve already felt the judgemental stares, and it was slightly uncomfortable.
I sat there anxiously, my leg lightly bouncing as I waited for everyone to get up and say their goodbyes with a smile glued to my face.
Leonâs father, Leondro, was currently speaking with his brother about a death that happened in the Kingdom recently, and I couldnât help but listen in.
âYou think it was an assassin?â Leandro asked Dave.
âThatâs the only explanation. Reya came to our Kingdom with no family, no friends, and no clothing. Almost as if she was on the run from something. She didnât associate with anyone and kept to herself, getting an old broke down home on the border.â
âHow did she get verified to enter the Kingdom then?â
âShe had an ID.â
âWas it fake?â
âMost likely.â
Leandro turned his head in my direction, and I immediately froze up and lowered my eyes. The guy was intimidating, and the pressure that rolled off of him pressed down on my shoulders with a vengeance.
âIâm assuming youâre aware of this?â He asked Leon, who sat beside me.
Leon glanced over at me in thought before turning to his father, âOf course I am. At first, I thought it was an incident pertaining to the war but ruled that out when I found out the person was human and completely unrelated to us. I already caught the person who gave out fake IDs and instructed the real estate department to avoid having humans live on the border for the time being.â
âAnd the assassin?â
âNever found. However, there were strange rumors saying that a little girl wearing a black hoodie was spotted around that area at the time of Reyaâs death. I sent the guards out to inquire, but nothing came up, so I decided to drop the case.â
Leondro nodded, âGood choice. If itâs an assassin, thereâs nothing we can do about it since itâs already been a few days. Theyâre probably long gone, and Reya wasnât an official citizen of our Kingdom, so we canât waste time looking into it. Focus on the war and ask the dealer to contact me privately. Thereâs something I need to find.â
My head snapped up at that, and I looked across at Leon in confusion.
âYes, father.â
Questions circled in my mind like crazy and because I was already deep in thought, I felt when Leon slipped in silently.
âPeach, are you ready to leave?â
I hesitated slightly, âLeave?â
âYeah. Youâre uncomfortable, right? Iâll walk you to your room. Doesnât look like these people are ready to leave the table yet.â
âIs that okay?â I asked worriedly, âif youâre not ready to leave, I can wait.â
I looked over at him as he got up from his seat and came to place a hand on my arm, lightly guiding me up and out of my seat.
âIâm gonna call it a day and get Starr settled in,â he announced to the whole table, causing all eyes to fall on us.
I fidgeted slightly and lowered my eyes. At that point, it was like a habit I couldnât shake off.
Stacia teased, âDonât go getting me grand babies before the mating ceremony now. Actually... that wouldnât sound so ba-â
âI can get you one if youâd like mother,â Leona pitched in jokingly.
Stacia shot a glare at her, âDonât joke about things like that.â
âYes, donât,â Leondro said, throwing his daughter a stern look that said to âbehaveâ.
Leona shrugged helplessly and chuckled.
âAnyways, it was nice meeting you, sweetie. I hope we get to hang out together in the future. Maybe shopping?â Daveâs mate smiled kindly at me, and I returned the smile and nodded along.
âIâd love to. It was lovely meeting everyone.â I muttered in response.
Dion, Leonâs uncle, snorted, âYou donât have to go, girl. Sheâs trying to get you alone, so you can tell her your life story. Women and their insatiable curiosity.â
Daveâs mate rolled her eyes, âIf you didnât talk, no one would realize itâs you, Dion.â
âAlright, guys, enough of that. Iâd also like to go shopping if youâre okay with it, Starr. Letâs make it a girlâs trip,â Dionâs mate chimed in.
Stacia clapped excitedly, âsounds like a great idea. Count Leona and I in.â
âWhy am I being dragged into this shitfest?â Leona mumbled.
âLanguage.â
She rolled her eyes, âYou just donât want to leave me in the castle by myself. Maybe I should find a cute guy at the mall to flirt with.â
âNot unless you want to hear of his disappearance,â Leondro stated.
âAs former King, you shouldnât say that about your subjects.â
âFormer King is the keyword there. I can kill whoever I want to now.â
Leon coughed awkwardly, âLetâs not entertain thoughts like that, please. As the current king, I canât be hearing this conversation. Letâs go, Peach.â
I nodded along as he led me out of the dining room and toward my floor.
âSo how was it? The dinner, I mean.â He asked, guiding me up a flight of stairs.
I pursed my lips in thought, âit was alright, I guess. I was expecting a more hostile environment but it wasnât so bad.â
âThatâs great. You looked a little anxious so I figured you were ready to leave.â
I nodded then fell silent, trapped in my thoughts about the conversation I heard earlier. I wanted to bring it up and ask but I wasnât sure that I was allowed to. Curiosity wasnât always a good thing.
As if reading my mind, Leon asked, âYou have something you want to ask me? I can feel your hesitation, Peach.â
He stopped walking and turned to me, tilting my head up to look him in the face, âif you ever want to ask me anything. Feel free to. Donât be afraid of how Iâd react to your questions. I can promise you that Iâd always give an honest answer.â
I hesitated slightly before nodding, âthat conversation you had with your father...â
âAbout the assassin?â
I nodded, âyou mentioned the dealer at the end of it. Do you mean the dealer who runs the black market in your kingdom?â
His eyes brightened with understanding as he chuckled and started up the stairs again, âYes I mean that dealer.â
âSo the royal family is aware of the illegal smuggling in and out of the Kingdom?â
âThereâs a black market almost everywhere you go. You shouldnât be so surprised.â
â... but from the sounds of it, you have dealings with the black market.â
He nodded, âOf course. Not everything we do can be done legally without gaining criticism from the people. Sometimes a leader must know when to bend the rules in order to maintain them.â
âSo you use the black market when you want to do something illegal? Arenât you afraid of getting blackmailed?â
âPeach... we donât just use the black market. We own it.â
âWhat?â I asked in surprise.
âThe black market thatâs running in our Kingdom is owned by the royal family. We had long since gained control over the entire thing years ago. That way, we can limit how negatively it impacts the Kingdom but still use it when we need to.â
âSo the dealer...â
âIs a great friend of mine. His name is Gideon but we call him Bigs.â
I was shocked into silence. So basically while all the packs secretly involved themselves with the black market behind the Kingâs back, the King knew the entire time?
âSo why do you punish packs who are caught doing trades?â
âBecause they are caught doing trades. I have no problem if itâs done in secrecy, but from the moment itâs been made public, as the King, I have to take action. Iâm running a Kingdom, not an illegal smuggling ring.â
I muttered without thinking, âwell technically youâre running both.â
As we came upon my bedroom door, Leon laughed and opened the door, gesturing for me to go inside, âyouâre right. I do run both, but no one knows that do they?â
I stepped into the room and went to sit on the edge of the bed, eyeing him as he leaned himself up on the wall, next to the door.
âI know.â
He eyed me in amusement, âare you gonna tell on me?â
I hurriedly shook my head, âof course not.â
âThen no one knows.â
âSo... the fact that the dealer is in contact with Zion right now...â I trailed off nervously as I eyed his expression.
It was completely calm and as I looked into his eyes, his wolf just stood there gazing back at me, just as calm.
âI know all about it.â
I nodded then brought up the real question, âso are you going to tell me why youâre letting all this play out instead of stopping him? You know the people call him the Rogue King, right? Arenât you offended?â
âOf a mutt with barely any power? Hardly.â
âWhy?â
He leaned off the wall and approached me, coming to kneel in front of me so weâd be at eye level. His hand came up to cup my cheek and I closed my eyes as I felt the warmth of his touch vibrate throughout my entire body.
âI promise Iâll tell you everything later. For now, I want you to focus on adjusting to the castle life and preparing yourself for our upcoming mating ceremony. Thatâs all that matters right now,â he leaned his head forward until our foreheads touched and I felt my insides begin to stir as his eyes glanced down at my lips.
The wolf behind his eyes began to shift slightly as if restless.
âI... I want to get stronger.â I muttered.
âYouâre already strong,â he murmured back.
âNo, Iâm not. I struggled to fight against an omega. Iâm an Alpha.â
âThat was before you connected with your wolf, though. I assure you it wouldnât be the same if you were to fight against her again now.â
âWhat if I fight against an Alpha male then?â
He paused, glancing back up at me in surprise, âyouâre planning to fight someone?â
I hesitated slightly, âZion...â
His eyes darkened as he pulled away and stood, turning his back to me.
âThatâs not necessary. I already plan to deal with the situation myself.â
âI want closure, Leon.â
He began to pace around the room, âand Iâll give you that closure.â
âI want to get my own closure. All Iâm asking is to have a conversation alone with him when the time comes. If it sparks a fight, I want to be ready.â
âNo.â
âLe-â
He turned to me angrily and growled, âI SAID NO, STARR!â
I jumped in surprise and lowered my head, my body trembling in fear.
I said nothing after that and just fiddled with my fingers, listening to his heavy breathing as he tried to calm himself down.
A few minutes later, I heard a sigh before his footsteps began walking toward me.
I looked up as he stopped in front of me and flinched when he raised a hand, only to relax when that hand came to cup my face.
âIâm sorry for shouting. I didnât mean to startle you... If you want to get stronger... Iâll teach you myself.â
I became hopeful, âdoes that mean y-â
âNo. I donât agree, peach but Iâm not going to stop you either. Weâll deal with it when the time comes. Iâm doing this so that you can survive an encounter alone with any dominant male Alpha, not just him. I plan to avoid the two of you meeting at all if possible.â
I pursed my lips but nodded, âthank you.â
He leaned down and kissed my forehead, âyouâre welcome. Is there anything else you need before I leave?â
I shook my head but then paused, âCan I get a small notebook? Like a journal or something? I have a habit of writing my thoughts down on paper. Itâd be nice if I had like a diary or something.â
He nodded, âAlright, Iâll let mother know. Have a good night.â
âGoodnight,â I watched as he quietly left the room then sighed and threw myself back on the large, comfortable bed.
