Chapter 14 âListen carefully. Iâll only say this once.â
Menu Jack took a pen and started writing on a piece of scrap paper while explaining the problems. Alice was stunned, looking at the man in front of her, her feelings suddenly becoming complicated. Because of Chloe, she had few friends and teachers disliked her. No one had ever helped her with her studies.
Jackâs tone was flat but sharp.âWith your attention span, you probably daydream in class!â Alice quickly snapped back to reality, whispering, âIâm sorry.
Iâll pay attention.â
Jack, seeing her submissive attitude, felt his throat tighten, and he continued explaining patiently. In the evening, warm light enveloped the two of them. Alice sat while he stood beside her, propping himself on the table, ca calculating the problemâsolving process. âDo you think in a straight line? This problem uses the same method as the last one.â
âThis is a simple trick. Canât you see it? Are your eyes just for show?â
âHave you ever tested your IQ? Are you below standard? Do it again!â
His tone was flat, but when he scolded, it hit hard. Luckily, Alice already knew he was the sharpâtongued school doctor;
otherwise, she would have lost it by now.
In the end, Alice managed to hold on. She packed up her completed homework:âThank you, Dr. Wilson. Youâre amazing. You still remember all this.â
Jack twirled his pen, his gaze appraising.âDoesnât your family hire a tutor?â
Alice pursed her lips.âI donât want to owe them anything. Tutors are expensive. I have no money and donât want to ask the Welch family for help.â
Jack looked at her fair profile, her lowered eyelids hiding her emotions.
Alice cautiously asked,âDr. Wilson, can I ask you for help if I donât understand something?â
He turned, his tone unnatural.âIâm busy.â
After being rejected, Alice didnât get angry; she obediently packed her bag.
Jack tapped the desk, adding, âIt depends on my mood.â
Alice smiled.âThank you, Dr. Wilson... no, thank you, teacher!â She said that and didnât wait for his reaction, grabbing her bag and running off.
Jack squinted, a lazy smile creeping onto his face; well, he might as well consider it a way to pass the time.
When Alice got home, it was already dark. The butler approached: âMr. Welch and Miss Black are out for dinner.â
âOkay.â
Alice went to the dining room alone, enjoying a rare moment of peace. She checked her phone and saw Chloeâs post:âHaving a feast with the brothers!â The photo showed them laughing.
Alice glanced at it and then closed the app, continuing to eat.
The next day, Alice got up and went to the dining room for breakfast. Her brothers werenât there yet, only Chloe. Chloe smugly boasted, âI made a lot of progress at training yesterday.â

* Chapter 14 Menu Alice sat down, expressionless, eating her food without acknowledging Chloe. Chloe was in a good mood and didnât mind Aliceâs cold attitude. Despite Aliceâs calm exterior, she was definitely fuming inside!
Alice finished her breakfast in a few bites and walked out directly. But the driver stood by, unmoving:âMiss Black isnât ready yet.
We need to wait for her.â
After ten minutes, Chloe still hadnât appeared. Alice said impatiently, âWeâll be late!â She was growing increasingly intolerant of the Welch family.
Alice decided not to wait any longer, opened the car door to leave, and ran into her fourth brother, Caleb, âWhat difference does it make if you wait a little longer for Chloe? Her father saved your life. He didnât abandon you. And now canât you even wait for Chloe?â Aliceâs hand gripped the door handle tightly.
