Chapter 7 Menu Alice bowed her head, covering her mouth as she coughed violently. Her thin back hunched over, as if she might cough up her lungs.
Calebâs tone was harsh.âDonât think you can fake illness to avoid consequences! You were supposed to take care of Chloe, get her water and food. But instead, you let her, a patient, get you lunch! And not only do you show no gratitude, but you also deliberately tripped Chloe. Have you lost your conscience?â
Alice stifled the cough.âI didnât push her. She...â
âAre you trying to say that Chloe fell because she couldnât stand? Do you think Iâm going to buy such a pathetic excuse? Do you admit to doing it on purpose?â
Aliceâs eyes stung. She straightened up.âI donât admit it.â
With a sharp crack, a slap landed on Aliceâs face, instantly igniting a fiery pain. But no matter how much her face hurt, it couldnât compare to the wound in her heart. The pain left her numb.
âCaleb, what are you doing?â
Noah strode in and pulled Caleb away.
âNoah, she did something terrible and still wonât admit it. I donât have a sister this cruel and unrepentant!â
Chloe stood in the doorway, her hand wrapped in bandages, looking pitiful. With redârimmed eyes, she spoke up:âCaleb, I said it was my fault. It has nothing to do with Alice.â
âChloe, youâre too kind. I have to teach Alice a lesson!â
Just as Caleb prepared to strike again, Jack abruptly pulled out a chair. The screech of metal on the floor cut through the tension.
Alice looked up.
Jack stood there, expressionless, leaning against the table. His eyes were cold and sharp.â family members of the student?â
Noah nodded.âYes, weâre her brothers.â
you âShe has a 102.4âdegree fever, suspected infection, and needs further examination. Plus, sheâs hypoglycemic and somewhat malnourished!â
Caleb was taken aback.âSheâs really sick?â Heâd thought Alice was faking it to avoid responsibility!
Jackâs voice was calm but firm.âPerhaps you should get your eyes checked. Itâs quite obvious.â The girlâs pale face and sickly appearance were hard to miss, werenât they?
Caleb sputtered, âWhat do you mean by that?!â
Jack frowned, his tone icy.âI mean it literally. Even though sheâs your adopted sister, if you take her in, you have to take responsibility.â
Upon hearing the word âadopted sister,â Aliceâs eyes flashed with sarcasm.
Noah quickly explained, âSheâs my biological sister, not adopted.â
Jack raised an eyebrow.âYouâd need a magnifying glass to see that. If you hadnât identified yourselves as family, Iâd have called the police for child abuse!â

< Chapter 7 Menu Seeing Aliceâs swollen face, Calebâs tone turned sour:âYou donât understand. I was teaching her a lesson!â
Noah was speechless. Heâd assumed Alice was healthy, unlike Chloe, who got sick after falling into the pool.
Caleb looked at Jack with disdain.âYou donât know her. Alice always fakes illness to avoid responsibility. This time, she even deliberately hurt Chloe. Chloeâs father died saving her. Sometimes I want to rip open her heart and see if itâs black!â
Aliceâs throat burned painfully. She wanted to argue but ended up saying nothing. Even if she spoke up, it wouldnât matter; they wouldnât believe her anyway. Chloe bit her lip.âItâs my fault. I shouldnât have gone to class while sick. I shouldnât have tried to get Alice lunch.â
âIt is your fault,â Jack said coldly.âYou shouldnât have gone to class while getting an IV drip, and shouldnât have bothered others while sick. Stop acting like your weakness gives you a right.â
