Chapter 46 - The Preparation
____________________________________
I sat in my chair nervously as a bunch of makeup artists and hairdressers attacked me with brushes and different types of irons. I sat as still and rigid as I could possibly as I was afraid that the make-up artist doing my eyes was going to get her brush in my eyeball.
"We're nearly done! We're then going to help you in your dress, Miss." One of the hairdressers said as she tugged at my blonde hair.
"Thank you," I thanked her.
I attempted to get a look at myself in the mirror but one of the hairdressers had placed a blanket over it, covering it and allowing me to see nothing which annoyed me. After another eternity of poking, plucking, brushing, tugging, and tapping they helped me into my wedding dress.
The moment I wore it I began to slightly tear up. I wish I had my father here to walk me down the aisle, but he was gone now and there was nothing left to do besides mourn him and move on. I sighed as a makeup artist frowned at me making me feel bad about messing up her hard work on my face.
"And now the grand reveal!" The hairdresser said as she tugged the material off the mirror.
The person in the mirror wasn't me. The two of us looked quite alike as we stood facing each other. I lifted my right hand and watched as she mocked the gesture using her left hand. I was shocked to say, the reflection was indeed mine. The girl in the mirror looked absolutely flawless and as though she belonged on a runway.
"You look beautiful Miss Hayes soon to be Mrs Hawthorne," The make up artist smiled.
"Thank you...?" I said raising a perfectly sculpted eyebrow.
"Shelby!" She smiled.
"Thank you so much, Shelby. You made me look great and so did you!" I said to the hairdressers.
"It's our job Miss," Shelby said shyly.
I nodded at her, "Yes of course!"
"I think we should get you in your dress and fix any problems that arise." The hairdresser said as she grabbed my dress off the hook.
Just as they were done dressing and 'fault checking' me - as they called it - my soon-to-be mother-in-law walked in and slapped a hand against her mouth as she looked at me.
"You look amazing!" She gasped and ran over a hugged me.
"Careful Mrs Hawthorne, her hair is quite delicate," Shelby said.
"Thank you Evelyn," I smiled at my mother-in-law gratefully.
"I think you should call me mom now." She said happily as she looked at the intricate detail of my dress.
"Of course... mom." I said and she smiled happily as tears began to flow out of her eyes.
"I'm so happy that you and Brandon are finally together. I believe in fate and the love story you guys share is amazing, I always knew you were perfect for my little boy," She sniffed and removed her tears with the back of her palm.
"Thank you, mom. I appreciate it, I really do," I said to her trying my best not to cry.
"If only your parents could see you like this. You look absolutely beautiful as though you are an angel that descended from the heavens," She said sniffing.
"You too. You look stunning," I told her.
"Thank you dear," She said laughing and crying at the same time.
I gave her a small smile, "You're welcome and you're right. I wish my mother was here, I miss her. I miss my father too. I wish that he could've been here to walk me down the aisle instead of my uncle, even though I am grateful for what he is doing for me," I said.
"Oh sweetheart!" Evelyn sniffed, "You have been through so much! You're the strongest girl I know!" She said.
"Thank you," I said, smiling.
The girls all helped me get into my wedding dress that had been designed and tailored specifically for me. It was a white dress that came down tightly to my waist and poofed out like a princess dress. It had a sweetheart neckline that had silver material surrounding it. The dress had a few snowflakes on the bodice. They were spread out randomly but added to the overall elegance of the dress.
"Miss?" Shelby said, looking afraid of Evelyn as she timidly approached me.
"Yes Shelby?" I asked.
"Time for your shoes, bouquet and veil," She told me as she ushered me out the room.
I walked with her to another room across the one I was staying in. It had a mini shoe carousel that was filled with different shoes for the different people. There were several bouquets that were elegantly made and left to stand in transparent glass vases which were filled with some water.
Shelby handed me the biggest flower bouquet that was made of big white flowers. The bouquet had a touch of green leaves and a few pink roses in it to give it some colour. The stalks of the roses were covered with a silky material which had diamantes embedded in it.
The hairdresser who I eventually came to know as Cami, placed the veil on my face. She pinned the veil in using a comb that had real diamonds in it, it had belonged to Evelyn's family and was passed down from generations before.
Cami then helped me slip on my white high heels and when she was finished Melanie walked in, her baby bump barely showing. I smiled at her and pulled her in a hug.
"You look hot!" She said.
I smiled, "So do you."
"Don't lie! I look like a pig!" She complained.
"You don't. I promise, you look amazing as always." I smiled at her.
"Thanks Ash, means a lot coming from you," She smiled.
"Do you guys know the gender yet?" I asked her.
Melanie shook her head, "I haven't passed my first trimester Ash!"
"Sorry?" I said but it sounded more like a question in my own ears.
"It's fine," She waved it off and sat down in the chair that I had been sitting in not even seconds ago.
"You've got this," I murmured to myself as I studied my appearance in the mirror opposite me once more.
"You do," A male voice said snapping me from my reverie.
"Uncle!" I gasped and smiled, "You're really here!"
"Indeed I am." He said and winked, "You didn't come to my mothers house when I was in town," My uncle said.
"I got carried away. These past few years have honestly been hectic and so... life changing." I admitted.
"I am sure darling. I saw the news about Serena and your ex fiancè, the FBI boy." He said.
"Sophia. I can't believe that she's a murderer and that Darren was her accomplice," I said.
"I'm sure. My wife called him a charmer," My uncle said with a huff as he rolled his eyes.
"Darren was. Well is I suppose," I said.
"Who wants to think about him on your big day! I'm sure John and Heather are very happy for you, dear. They must be rejoicing in heaven celebrating how amazing their beautiful daughter is and how strong she is," He said sadly.
"Thank you," I said as my throat began clogging, "How's Aunt Fiona?" I said changing the topic.
Although I missed my parents and wished they were here, I didn't necessarily want the gaping hole in my chest to grow any bigger, particularly on my big day.
I always do look forward to the day where I can think of them fondly and the day I will stop believing that I was the one who killed them. I am aware that I didn't do anything to cause the accident but I always feel guilty about the fact that I told my father to speed the car that terrible day, I've always been curious to know what my father saw that day that caused him to swerve off the mountain.
"Fiona is good. She's here with Leanne and Viviane." He said, his eyes sparkling as he thought about his family.
"Woah!" I gasped, "I haven't seen Vivvy or Lee since they left for Berkley!" I said.
"They've missed you a lot, Ash!" He smiled.
"I've missed them too," I said thoughtfully.
"We are ready downstairs for the bride's entrance!" A male voice called from the entrance as he peered in.
"We're ready here too," I said.
"Are you ready, darling?" My uncle asked and I nodded.
"Ready."
