Chapter 0123 +25 BONUS Desperate to redirect their thoughts, I blurted, âDavid... he said something about my wolf.â I took a breath, trying to steady my voice. âHe said that heâd poisoned me, that my wolf was gone because of him.â
My motherâs face twisted with restrained anger. âThat rotten little...â She cut herself off, her lips pressed together in frustration.
âTo think I welcomed that man into our home while he was secretly harming my child,â my father said, fury blazing in his eyes.
âBut if he admitted this, and after what happened yesterday, itâs clear you need to see our pack doctor.â
I nodded, not hesitating. âOkay.â
I knew it was the only way to ease their minds, and in truth, I wanted answers just as much. I missed my wolf, who had been silent for so long. If there was any chance of undoing what David had done and bringing her back, I needed to find out.
âIn the meantime, we need to decide what to do about David,â my father said, his voice laced with determination.
âIâve already initiated an investigation,â Alexander replied his expression hardening. âThe police are involved, of course, but I also have a private investigator on the case. Itâs not that I donât trust the officials, but I believe David may be more cunning than they realize.â
âI agree,â my father said.
âI want to ensure he doesnât slip through the cracks. I spoke to my investigator early this morning, as well as with police representatives. Unfortunately, despite the abundance of evidence, thereâs nothing at the scene that ties David directly to the attack.â
âWhat do you mean?â my mother asked, frowning.
âThe phone he left was a prepaid burner with no evidence linking it to him,â Alexander explained. âThe camera was brand new, straight out of the box, with no previous footage to trace back to him. And he was careful with his fingerprintsâthe only real evidence left is the blood from the injuries I inflicted on him. While testing could confirm itâs his, my investigator thinks it wonât be enough to charge him.â
âWhy?â my mother pressed.
âGiven Ellaâs history with David, my investigator believes that if we accuse him based on blood evidence alone, heâll claim we staged it to frame him. Itâs exactly the sort of tactic David would use to deflect suspicion.â
âSo what can we do?â she asked, clearly frustrated.
âFor now, we gather eyewitness accounts,â Alexander replied. âThere had to be people who saw David with Ella, or at least noticed him fleeing. Weâll also check CCTV footage and build from there. Davidâs too recognizable for someone not to have noticed him.â
âHe was wearing a disguise,â I recalled, thinking of the dark sunglasses and hat. âIt wasnât a great disguise, but unless people were paying close attention, they wouldnât have realized it was him.â
âNot after he fled,â Alexander added. âDuring the struggle, his disguise was left behind.â
âSo thereâs a chance he was seen,â my father said, sounding hopeful.
âA slim chance,â Alexander agreed, his tone tempered. âWe should be prepared for him to deny everything. As infuriating as it is, even that may not be enough to bring him down.â
Silence fell over the room as we all took in Alexanderâs words. He was right, and it made my heart ache. No matter 1/2 +25 BONUS Chapter 0123 what hell David put me through, it seemed that nothing was ever enough to take him down. It felt almost hopeless.
But I couldnât let myself feel that way. There was too much on the line. I had to keep fighting until David was held accountable for his actions. I had to make sure he was exposed for the monster he is.
