Chapter 366 Ella POV The atmosphere in the kingâs home was tense. Servants and guards moved briskly through the halls, their expressions unreadable but their urgency undeniable.
The entire building was bracing itself for what was about to unfoldâthe kingâs official statement on the arrests, the fallout of the investigation, the shift in the kingdomâs balance of power.
But first, there was a meeting to be had.
Alexander and I were led into the kingâs private study, where he stood at the window, his hands clasped behind his back. His posture was rigid, his gaze distant as he stared out at the city below.
He turned when we entered, his face unreadable.. âI donât have much time,â he said, his voice tired. âI need to finalize my speech before the press conference.â
âThis wonât take long,â Alexander assured him.
The king nodded and moved to sit behind his desk, gesturing for us to do the same. âI assume youâre here because of the things Amandaâs been saying?â he asked, steepling his fingers together.
âNo,â I said plainly. âWeâre here because of Diana.â
His brows furrowed slightly, but he didnât speak right away Alexander and I exchanged a glance before I pushed forward.
âSheâs been meeting with you a lot lately,â I said carefully. More than seems normal for a woman of her status.â
The king exhaled, rubbing his temple. âYes, she has. Alexander, I assumed that was on your request.â
Alexanderâs jaw tensed. âWhy would I ask her to do that?â
The king frowned. âShe said you wanted her to handle thingsâsaid the details of the crimes were too upsetting for you and Ella.â
I stiffened. âThat was a lie.â
The words were sharp, cutting through the room like a blade. The kingâs frown deepened as he studied us, realization dawning behind his eyes.
Alexander leaned forward. âWe donât know why sheâs doing this yet, but weâre concerned that she may have her own motives.â
âAre you making an accusation against your mother?â the king asked, his eyebrows arched in surprise.
âNo,â Alexander answered quickly. âItâs nothing like that. I just worry that sheâs overstepping. She can be.... overbearing.â
âIâve noticed that,â the king said bluntly. âIf thatâs the case, Iâll make sure that I address any further concerns about the investigation to you. I have to tell you, Iâm not pleased to learn sheâs been wasting my time.â
âWe only found out about the meetings a few days ago when Elizabeth mentioned them,â I explained. âI promise, we would have put an end to it sooner if weâd known.â
The king sat back in his chair, his expression unreadable. âAnd yet, youâre not telling me everything,â he noted, his voice quieter now, more thoughtful.
I hesitated. He wasnât wrong. We hadnât told him about Dianaâs involvement with Amanda yetâabout the tangled 1/2 +25 BONUS Chapter 366 web she had been spinning behind the scenes. But we couldnât risk exposing too much without proof.
Instead, I pivoted. âWhat about Archer?â
>>
The kingâs expression darkened slightly, though not with anger. More like exhaustion. âAmanda has implicated him, he admitted.
âSome of what sheâs said suggests that Archer may have had a hand in planning some of these attacks.â
My stomach twisted.
âBut,â the king continued, âgiven her current state of mind, itâs hard to trust anything she says outright. Sheâs been erratic, paranoid. Sometimes she contradicts herself in the same breath.â
âAre you still investigating him?â I asked.
He nodded. âWe are. But now that heâs officially announced his candidacy in the election, it complicates things. Every move we make will be scrutinized.â
I glanced at Alexander, who had gone silent beside me. His face was unreadable, but I could see the tension in his posture.
