Chapter 28: CHAPTER 28 (END)

ASSIGNMENT: LOVE YOUWords: 6990

The city was buzzing with the usual hum of activity, but it felt different today. Everything felt like it was aligning perfectly, and I knew it was because of Kruti.

We were on a date. A real one this time.

I had been stubborn for too long. Work, stress, deadlines—it all felt like it had consumed me for months, maybe even years. I had been so focused on everything else that I had forgotten about the one thing that had always mattered more than anything: her.

Kruti had been patient with me, more patient than I deserved. She had understood my need to focus on my career, my work, and yet, she had never stopped making her presence known in my life. And now, finally, I was making a change.

It had taken some effort, but I had decided today would be about us. No work. No distractions. Just her and me, reconnecting, enjoying what we had built.

The walk was quiet, but not the uncomfortable kind of silence. It was the kind of silence that said everything without needing words.

We stopped in front of her favorite restaurant. She had dragged me there after a long day of meetings, insisting that I try their specialty dish, and despite my tiredness, I had been taken in by her energy.

I could still remember the way she had looked at me back then, like she knew exactly who I was even when I didn't.

"You look like you're going to pass out," Kruti teased, nudging me as we got out of the car. "Are you sure you want to eat here? You look like you need a nap more than dinner."

I rolled my eyes, but I couldn't hide the smile tugging at my lips. "I'm fine, Kruti. I just need a few minutes to adjust to your overwhelming enthusiasm."

She laughed, taking my arm as we walked inside. I couldn't help but notice how different the place felt now, how familiar, how much it had come to mean to me because of her.

Dinner was delicious, just like I remembered, and it was followed by a walk to the nearby fair. Kruti insisted we stop at every stall, her eyes lighting up every time she saw something she liked. She was like a kid in a candy shop, pulling me this way and that, laughing at the way I sighed at every loud noise and flashing light.

"Come on, Dev! Stop being such a buzzkill! Just enjoy it," she called out, pulling me toward the balloon stall.

"I am enjoying it," I grumbled, though the truth was, I was. Seeing her so happy, so carefree, made everything feel a little lighter.

She giggled and bought a small bunch of flowers from one of the vendors, a small bouquet of daisies and marigolds. She tied them together and started weaving them into a crown, carefully crafting each flower.

I watched her for a while, wondering how someone could look so effortlessly beautiful doing something as simple as making a flower crown.

When she finished, she turned to me, a mischievous grin on her face.

"Here," she said, placing the crown on my head. "You're wearing it now. I made it for you."

I blinked. "I don't think I can pull this off."

She looked at me seriously. "You can. You're wearing it, whether you like it or not."

I didn't argue. I didn't have it in me to argue with her when she was this determined. And honestly, seeing her so pleased with the crown made me want to wear it just to see that smile on her face.

"You're lucky I love you," I muttered, feeling the warmth of her eyes on me.

She reached up and fixed the crown on my head, then cupped my face in her hands. "You have no idea how lucky you are."

"Oh, I do," I said softly, my voice thick with emotion I couldn't quite articulate.

We continued walking through the fair, laughing at nothing in particular, simply enjoying the fact that we were together. The world felt a little smaller, a little simpler when I was with her.

As the evening deepened and the sun began to set, we drove to a small lake outside the city. It wasn't a place we had visited before, but I knew it was special to her. She had insisted on taking me here, saying that it was one of the few places where she could truly relax, where she could feel the quiet peace of the world.

We walked to the water's edge, the soft ripples in the lake reflecting the orange and pink hues of the sunset.

The silence between us wasn't awkward this time. It wasn't the kind of silence that hung heavily in the air, but rather, the kind of silence that said everything we needed to say without speaking a word.

Kruti sat down on the grass, and I joined her. We sat side by side, but I could feel her eyes on me. Her hand brushed mine.

It felt weird. I can't really describe the feeling. The moment I leaned my head on her lap— it felt like... Home

I closed my eyes, breathing in the fresh evening air, the peace of the lake settling in around us. And then, without realizing it, I felt myself relax in a way I hadn't in years.

"Dev?" she whispered, her voice gentle, almost hesitant.

"Hmm?" I replied, my voice soft.

"You okay?"

I nodded, but I knew she could sense the emotional storm I had been trying to hide.

"I'm just... happy," I said finally, lifting my head to look at her. "For the first time in a long time, I feel like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be."

Her eyes softened, and she smiled at me. But there was something different about the smile this time. It wasn't mischievous or teasing. It was filled with warmth, filled with something I could only describe as love.

"You're not going anywhere, are you?" she asked, her voice small.

"I'm not," I whispered, my heart swelling with the truth of the words. "I'm not going anywhere, kitten. Not anymore."

"Kitten?" She looked confused.

"Yes. Kitten?" I smirked.

"What do you mean?" I could clearly see her blushing.

"You're like a Kitten."

"Shut up!" She exclaimed, turning her face away.

"But I love you," I smiled.

Slowly she smiled, the world around me seemed to fade. Her soft fingers brushed through my hair, her touch gentle and soothing.

It felt like I was floating, as if the weight of the world had been lifted from my shoulders, just by being with her.

Kruti's soft laughter filled the air, and I smiled to myself.

She gently reached for the dupatta, the fabric soft and luxurious, and she draped it over my face, covering me completely.

I felt her fingers adjust it carefully, the weight of the cloth like a warm blanket, protecting me.

For the first time in my life, I felt at peace.

I felt like I had finally found my home.

Her lap, her presence—this was where I was meant to be.

I closed my eyes, feeling the comfort of her touch, the warmth of her love surrounding me.

And I couldn't help but smile, knowing that no matter what happened in the future, this moment would always be mine.

Ours.

"I love you, Dev."

I let out a deep sigh, my heart overflowing with affection.

"I'll love you till the stars burn out, Till oceans dry and rains forget to fall. I'll hold your hand through time rewound,

And catch you if you start to fall."

"You're being poetic!" She laughed.

"And I love to have you as my muse," I smiled.

And for the first time in a long time, I felt truly at home.
