Amey stood in the kitchen the next morning, sipping his coffee and contemplating the events of the previous night. The kiss lingered in his mind, a mix of confusion and guilt swirling in his chest. He had told Anushri they were better off as friends, yet his actions contradicted his words. He heard her footsteps before he saw her. Turning, he found her walking into the kitchen, her face calm but distant.“Good morning,” he said cautiously, his voice laced with hesitation.“Morning,” she replied, her tone polite but neutral as she poured herself a glass of water.Amey hesitated for a moment before deciding to address the elephant in the room. “About last night...”She paused, glancing at him over her shoulder. “What about it?”“I’m sorry,” he said, his voice low. “I shouldn’t have—”“It’s okay, Amey,” she interrupted, her tone even. “You don’t have to apologize.”He blinked, taken aback by her nonchalant response. “I... I feel like I should. I don’t want you to get the wrong idea.”Anushri offered him a small smile, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “I know you didn’t mean anything by it. I understand you, Amey. I think I’ve come to know you better than you realize.”Her words hit him harder than he expected. She spoke with a quiet certainty, as if she had already accepted every flaw, every wall he had built around himself.“I just don’t want to hurt you,” he murmured, feeling a pang of guilt.“You won’t,” she said softly, setting her glass down on the counter. “I’ve learned not to expect anything more than what you’re willing to give. I’ll be fine, Amey. I promise.”Before he could respond, she walked out of the kitchen, leaving him alone with his thoughts.---Later that afternoon, Amey met up with his childhood friend, raj, at their usual café. Raj had always been a voice of reason in his life, and today, Amey needed his advice more than ever.“You look like you’ve been hit by a truck,” raj said, raising an eyebrow as Amey slumped into the chair across from him. “What’s going on?”Amey sighed, running a hand through his hair. “It’s complicated.”Raj smirked. “It always is with you. Start talking.”Amey recounted everything—from Anushri’s confession to the kiss during the movie and his own confusion about what he felt. Raj listened patiently, nodding occasionally as he sipped his coffee. When Amey finished, raj leaned back in his chair, his expression thoughtful. “Let me get this straight. You’ve got a wife who’s clearly in love with you, and instead of giving it a chance, you’re pushing her away because of some past heartbreak?”Amey frowned. “It’s not that simple. I can’t risk getting hurt again. And what if I hurt her in the process? She deserves better.”Raj rolled his eyes. “You’re doing that thing again—overthinking everything. Look, I get it. You’ve been through a lot. But don’t you think it’s time to let go of the past? Anushri isn’t the person who hurt you. She’s trying to build something real with you, and you’re shutting her out because you’re scared.”“It’s not just fear,” Amey argued. “I don’t even know if I’m capable of loving anyone anymore.”Raj shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. “That’s the biggest load of crap I’ve ever heard. Love isn’t about being perfect or knowing everything. It’s about showing up, Amey. It’s about trying.”Amey looked down at his coffee, raj’s words sinking in.“You kissed her, didn’t you?” raj continued. “And don’t tell me it didn’t mean anything. That kind of thing doesn’t just happen out of nowhere. Maybe it’s time to stop running and see where this can go.”Amey sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “I don’t know, raj What if I mess it up?”Raj leaned forward, his expression serious. “Then you’ll mess it up. But at least you’ll know you tried. Staying stuck in your own head isn’t helping anyone—not you, and definitely not Anushri.”Amey nodded slowly, the weight of raj's advice settling over him. Deep down, he knew his friend was right.---That evening, as Amey returned home, he found Anushri in the living room, quietly arranging flowers in a vase. She looked up as he entered, offering him a small smile. For the first time, Amey allowed himself to really look at her—to see the quiet strength and patience she had shown him.“Maybe raj is right,” he thought. “Maybe it’s time to take a chance.”Though he didn’t say anything, a flicker of resolve lit up inside him. He wasn’t ready to dive headfirst into love, but perhaps it was time to stop shutting her out.
