Adele nodded timidly, her eyes wide with fear.
Pleased, Sadie headed for the door.
Her demeanor quickly changed upon seeing Devin.
Tears sprang to her eyes as she grasped his hand, her voice filled with urgency.
âAny news about Holden? Heâs alright, isnât he?â
Devin looked serious as he shook his head.
âWe havenât heard anything yet⦠It doesnât look good.
â
At this, Sadie began to cry, Leaning against the doorframe, her sobs filling the air.
âHow can this happen? He canât just die.
I canât believe it.
He wouldnât leave me and Adele like this.
It just isnât possibleâ¦â
Devin watched Sadieâs tears, his face showing sympathy, though he felt indifferent inside.
He knew Sadie had seen Zayden just a few days ago and wasnât truly mourning Holden.
Nonetheless, he comforted her diligently until she managed to compose herself.
After drying her tears, Sadie asked, âIf thereâs no news about Holden, why did you come today?â
Devin replied, âSince Mr.
Fredrick isnât here, itâs my responsibility to look after Adele.
Iâm here to accompany her to the hospital for a routine check-up.
â
Sadie finally stopped crying, but tears still streaked her cheeks as she turned to Devin.
âIâll take Adele to the check-up.
Holdenâs in trouble, and Adele is so young.
She only has me,â she said, her voice breaking as fresh tears began to flow.
Her sobs grew louder, and she leaned against the doorframe, slowly sliding to her knees, overwhelmed by her emotions.
Her face turned pale, and she started to tremble, clutching at her chest as her heart condition worsened.
Struggling to stand, Sadie staggered around looking for her heart medication.
In her weakness, she knocked over a few items.
Devin tried to help her retrieve the medicine, thinking to himself that despite Sadieâs flair for drama, she really wasnât taking her health seriously.
âItâs over there,â Sadie gasped, pointing to the medicine box while leaning weakly against the couch.
Devin looked at her frail form and doubted whether she was really fit to give birth to the baby in her belly.
He handed her the medicine and watched as she gradually calmed down after taking the medicine.
Devin said, âMiss Pierre, you need to rest more.
Stay home, and Iâll take Adele to her check-up.
â
Sadie sighed deeply, clutching her chest, and nodded.
She called out, âAdele, come here.
â
Adele emerged slowly from the dining room.
Looking at Adele, Sadie asked âMr.
Mason will take you to your check-up.
Will you go with him?â
Adele usually was quite close to Devin, so Devin didnât think much of it and reached out to take her hand to leave.
But Adele avoided his hand, burst into tears, and clung to Sadie, screaming, âNo, no, I want mommy!â
Taken aback, Devin crouched down to gently coax her.
âAdele, itâs time for your check-up.
Iâll take you, and weâll be back to see mommy soon, okay?â
But Adele shook her head, looked fearfully at Sadie, and sobbed, âI want mommy.
