Seeing that Adrian was back to normal, Sonia quickly updated him on the recent events.
As the reality of his actions towards Jennifer earlier dawned on him, despair washed over Adrian.
âOh no, this is bad,â he muttered, his expression turning to one of utter distress as he sank back into Maxwellâs arms with his eyes closed.
âAdrian, are you all right?â Sonia, worried that he might have passed out once more, quickly moved to press the button to call the doctor over.
At that moment, Jennifer entered the room with a strawberry cake in hand.
The VIP hospital wing did offer strawberry cakes at its cafeteria, but they were hardly appetizing, so Jennifer had made a special trip to fetch a better one from outside to cheer Adrian up.
Startled by the sight of Adrian seemingly unconscious, Jennifer let the box holding the cake fall to the floor.
âAdrian!â Jennifer cried out, rushing to his side, her voice trembling.
âDonât scare me like this! Whatâs wrong?â
Noticing Jennifer, Maxwell quickly pushed Adrian into her arms, not wanting to intrude.
He hadnât considered their size difference, though, and when Adrian leaned on Jennifer for support, Jennifer struggled to keep both of them upright.
Eventually, they both ended up on the floor with Jennifer cradling Adrianâs head.
Three minutes ticked by.
After Jennifer called Adrianâs name for a while, Adrian slowly opened his eyes, his head still resting in her lap, and whispered weakly, âYouâre finally back.
Iâve been waiting for you for a long time⦠I almost thought I could not make it.
â
Adrian was putting on an act.
His voice was interrupted by coughs that seemed to threaten his very breath.
Seeing this, tears welled u
ian thought she was.
His well-being was all that mattered.
âYouâre not going to die, Adrian.
Iâll make sure to get you the best doctors,â Jennifer assured Adrian, caressing his face gently.
âI brought your favorite strawberry cake.
Would you like some? Shall I feed it to you?â
âYes, thank you so much,â Adrian responded with a weak smile.
Nearby, Sonia slowly withdrew her hand from the call button, her expression one of suspicion upon hearing Adrianâs words.
It seemed to her he was back to his usual self.
âWhat do you want me to say?â Maxwell responded with a_ shrug, feigning ignorance.
âIâm no doctor.
How would I know that?â
As their argument threatened to escalate, Sonia abruptly raised her hand, signaling a halt.
âEnough.
Iâll call the doctor over first.
â
Just as Sonia was about to press the button to call the doctor, Adrian stirred, coughing lightly.
âWhy are you both here?â Adrianâs eyes widened in surprise, then narrowed in concern as he realized Jennifer was here.
âWhereâs Jennifer? Why isnât she here?â
