His brow furrowed as he responded sharply, âWho is this? Why are you calling me that?â
âDonât you recognize my voice? Itâs me, Melon! Is Mommy with you? I tried calling her, but she didnât pick up.
Is she busy?â the young man on the other end of the line said.
Holden believed the voice belonged to someone in their twenties at least.
He nearly dismissed it as a prank, but something made him hesitate.
The way the young man said âMommyâ was eerily familiar.
His tone really sounded like Melonâs.
Holdenâs eyes darted to Ariana instinctively.
âWhy do you look so confused?â Ariana asked, not understanding what was happening.

Holdenâs lips tightened.
After a momentâs hesitation, he said, âItâs Melon calling.
â
Joy exploded across Arianaâs pale face.
She lunged for the phone.
Holden activated the speaker and put his phone in front of Ariana.
âBaby, Iâve missed you so much.
â Arianaâs voice quavered, tears welling in her eyes.
âWhere are you? Are you alright? Did Moss hurt you?â
The barrage of questions didnât faze the caller.
A cheerful voice responded, âIâm fine, Mommy! Not hurt at all, but I donât know where I am.
â
Ariana froze.
That voiceâ¦
Arianaâs expression hardened.
âWho are you really?â she demanded.
âWhy are you pretending to be my son? Did Moss put you up to this?â
Melonâs voice cracked as he struggled to hold back tears, his frustration palpable over the phone.
He sobbed quietly where Ariana couldnât see him.
âMommy, donât you recognize my voice? Itâs me, Melonâ¦â
Despite hearing the sorrow in Melonâs voice, Ariana remained unmoved.
She thought it was all a trick.
âWhat are you and Moss up to now?â Arianaâs voice was stern, her patience wearing thin.
âI want to speak to my son, Melon.
Put him on the line.
â
âMommy, Iâm really Melon!â Melon exclaimed.
However, Arianaâs skepticism didnât waver.
She continued to demand for her son, ignoring Melonâs frantic pleas.
âJust give me my son, and I wonât cause any trouble for you,â Holden said to the phone.
âI am your son!â Melonâs voice broke with despair.
Then, in a sudden burst of inspiration, he said, âMommy, remember when I tried to cook soup for you and almost set the kitchen on fire? And when you lost me at the zoo, and I was almost taken by kidnappers? Only you and I know these things.
â
Ariana froze, stunned.
