âThis is the ward that Delroy Quast is in.â
Angeline looked through the window to study the environment of the bare ward. Delroy was lying on a single bed with a ventilator and a wooden table beside him.
Angeline became ill at ease, and she frowned. âDoes he not have anyone taking care of him?â
The nurse carefully scanned her surroundings to make sure no one was around before whispering, âDelroy has been in our hospital for four years. I heard he used to be a driver for a rich couple, but unfortunately, he was dragged into a strange car accident. The family he had worked for did not plan to pay his medical bills, so Delroyâs family gave up on the thought of saving him.â
After hearing the nurseâs explanation, Angeline tightened her fists as fury manifested on her face.
How can Joseline do something like this? Is she even human?
Right then, a world-weary womanâs voice sounded out behind them. âWhat are you looking at?â
Then, they saw a plump woman with a headscarf and patched clothes with a flask in her hands standing a distance away, watching them coldly.
When the nurse saw her, she shuddered and uttered, âMrs. Quast, youâre here.â
The woman then walked over to her and studied their expressions. In a nervous tone, she asked, âIs my Delroy in a bad state again?â
âHeâs not. Donât worry. However, this miss wants to have a talk with you,â the nurse gently told the plump woman.
At that, the plump woman turned to Angeline warily, confused by Angelineâs presence.
Reading the room, the nurse excused herself. Before she left, she whispered to Angeline, âSheâs Delroyâs wife, and sheâs a feisty one. Please have patience with her.â
âI got it. Thank you,â Angeline said with a smile, a wave of warmth seeping into her heart. She then watched the nurse take an elevator down.
There were few wards on the third floor, and there were few people around too. In fact, Angeline and Darlene were the only ones standing in the corridor, and the air between them was tense.
At the sight of Darleneâs wary gaze, Angeline passed her the fruit basket in her hands with a friendly smile.
âHello, Mrs. Quast. Iâm here to visit Mr. Quast. I bought some fruits on my way here, and I hope you wonât mind it.â
Nonetheless, Darlene did not take it right away as she stared at Angeline, baffled.
âWhat kind of relationship do you have with Delroy?â
Angeline was silent for a moment before solemnly answering, âIâm Angeline Sorelle, the second daughter of the Sorelles.â
Upon hearing the second half of Angelineâs speech, the middle-aged woman scowled and snarled, âHow are you shameless enough to come all the way here? Do you think that the Sorelles havenât hurt our family enough? Are you here to rub salt into our wounds?â
Angeline could understand her fury. After all, her family was ruined because of the accident, and Delroy was sent to a shabby hospital like this.
Hence, Angeline patiently explained, âMrs. Quast, I think youâve mistaken something. Iâm not Joselineâ¦â
âShut up! All of you Sorelles are the same! You all have wicked hearts!â Darlene shrieked. She then grabbed the broom by the doorway and swung it at Angeline. âShoo! Why are you still here trying to pretend to be some good fellow? Get out!â
Angeline never thought that she would be beaten up before she could even tell the other party the aim of her visit. As her arm turned red, she groaned in pain.
Right as Darlene was about to hit her with the broom again, Angeline caught the weapon in time. No longer holding herself back, she snapped, âI know youâre angry because your manâs hurt, but will your fuss do anything? Canât we sit down and have a proper talk instead?â
Darleneâs eyes reddened, and the fats on her face trembled in her rage.
In the next second, she bellowed, âHave you Sorelles ever bothered to have a proper talk with me when I came to your place to ask for the medical compensation? I know that your family and its business are prominent, but that doesnât mean you can be a bully! How can you have me go down on my knees to eat dog food? You never treated me like a human!â
Darlene was manic, but there was nothing Angeline could say about the things the Sorelle family made Darlene suffer through. Guilt welled up in Angelineâs eyes.
What Joseline had done was inhumane, and she had brought the Sorelle familyâs reputation to ruins.
Yet, for the sake of bringing justice to her deceased parents, Angeline had no choice but to steel herself and clean up Joselineâs mess.
She swore she was going to settle the score with Joseline for all these things.
Once the plump woman was done cursing at Angeline, she fell to the ground weakly. She covered her face with both her hands and began bawling.
It was as if she was trying to release all the humiliation she had to suffer throughout the years through her tears.
Her cries attracted the attention of the people nearby, and the patients in the wards came out to see what was happening. With Darleneâs accusations, more and more people appeared and began berating Angeline.
âShe looks like a normal person, but how can she do something as immoral as this? I knew it. The richer a person is, the less humane they are. How terrible. Theyâd deserve it even if a car runs into them.â
Angeline tolerated the first speakerâs accusations, but the second half of her sentence made a cold look form in Angelineâs eyes.
Whipping her head toward the woman with cruel words, Angeline darkened her expression and grimly asked, âMiss, did you see what happened, or were you involved in this? How dare you speak of nonsense here? If I really am a rich person, arenât you afraid that Iâll bring you to court for defamation?â
The people around her only dared to spit curses and judgment; none dared to actually go up against Angeline.
The moment they heard her words, they trembled and quickly took steps back in silence.
Nevertheless, something more challenging presented itself. A clear voice of a youth sounded out.
âMother. Mother, why are you on the floor? Are you okay?â
In the next second, a youth in a blue and white school uniform came upstairs with a few local police officers.
After helping Darlene to her feet, he stretched out his arm to shield his mother as if they were up against a monster.
âMy father wouldnât have become a vegetable if he hadnât listened to you Sorelles. Are you now here to hurt my mother too?â
Angeline stared at him. âWhat?â
âIââ the boy started, but Darlene grabbed his arm.
With a pale face, she chided, âDonât speak nonsense, my son. Officers, please take this woman away quickly. Sheâs been causing trouble here.â
With that, the police officers stepped forward and cuffed Angeline.
âMiss, please come to the station with us.â
Angeline could not move after that. An anxious look crept onto her face, and she turned to look at the youthâs panicking eyes.
The sight of that made her even more certain that the driver was involved in the accident.
Furthermore, with the expression the youth wore, it seemed like the youth knew something that went behind the scenes too.
Certain possibilities had popped into Angelineâs head, and all she needed to do now was to verify them.
When Angeline was taken away, she deliberately paused in her tracks beside the youth and said in a low voice, âThe loss of that accident back then had been major, and the police are currently opening the case again. If you turn out to be innocent in this, Iâll give you twice the medical compensation the Sorelle family owed you.â
