âHello, miss. I got your number from the police. Iâm Delroyâs son, and Iâd like to meet up with you in person.â
As Angeline listened to the juvenile voice over the phone, her eyes were brimming with emotions.
Oh, angels took pity on me! Iâm glad that my efforts to wait in the county havenât gone to waste.
âSure. Tell me where we should meet.â
Angeline intentionally kept her tone on a tight leash to sound as calm as she could be.
Moments after she hung up the phone, Delroyâs son texted her the address of their rendezvousâa small cafe around the neighborhood.
Angeline quickly changed into a fresh set of clothes before making a beeline for the garage downstairs.
Never in a million years would she expect to bump into Sylas in the living room. The latter was wielding a spoon, delightfully enjoying a piece of cake at his leisure.
âMs. Sorelle, why did you come down?â
He licked the mousse at the corner of his lips when he caught sight of Angeline.
Flabbergasted, Angeline gaped at the man in shock. Concurrently, she scrutinized the surroundings but found no trace of Evanderâs presence. Puzzlement inundated her. âDonât you have to follow him back to Hallsbay, too?â she probed.
âMr. Golding has asked me to stay behind and ensure your safety. Are you going somewhere? Iâll drive you there.â
Sylasâ words sent a warm feeling through Angelineâs heart. I wouldâve never anticipated Evander to order his right-hand man to stay by my side. It seems like he very much approved of my mission this time around.
âNo, itâs fine. Iâm simply meeting up with a friend. You should stay here and rest,â was Angelineâs comment.
As persistent as Sylas had always been, he laid down the cake in his hands before treading on the womanâs heels.
âMr. Golding has specifically instructed me to keep an eye on you at all times. If I let you step out alone, Iâll have to answer to him. Iâll just observe from afar, and I promise not to intrude.â
âUh⦠All right.â
Left with no choice, Angeline could only comply with his wish. At first, she had hoped for the negotiation to remain private, and the fewer people in the know of it, the better. Be that as it might, since Evander meant well, she did not want to turn him down.
With that, Sylas drove Angelineâs car and dropped her off at a small cafe in the county. Through the windows, Angeline could already see a young man inside looking rather ill at ease in his seat.
Sylas then pulled over on the opposite side of the road. From there, he could get a clear view of the entire scene where Angeline was at.
In the interim, Angeline had already set foot in the cafe. She approached the young man, flashing him a benevolent smile before piping up, âI heard from your mom that youâre âCas,â right?â
The young man blushed at her words. Immediately, he leaped up from his seat while rubbing his palms, seemingly a little nervous.
âYes, my mom nicknamed me that. My name is Acacius Quast.â
âThatâs a nice, down-to-earth name. Your dad must hope that youâll always be a pure and innocent person.â
Angeline sang his praises on the spot and did away with the formality. Taking her seat, she summoned a waiter over and ordered a glass of water.
Just when Acacius heard the mention of his father, a hint of pain flickered in those clear, bright eyes of his, and he gripped the hem of his shirt with his slender fingers. He kept silent for a while before eventually posing an inquiry.
âDid you mean it when you said youâre willing to pay my dadâs medical bills?â
âOf course. Iâm a woman of my word.â
âYou wouldnât be deceiving us the way Ms. Joseline did, would you?â Acacius shot Angeline a hopeful look and went on, âThe doctor said my dadâs condition is going south, so he could really use the surgery as soon as possible.â
Upon hearing that statement, Angeline unwittingly clenched the glass of water with her fair fingers. Her gaze was as deep as a bottomless pit.
âNo, Iâm not going to lie. But, Cas, youâre a clever boy, so since you have the courage to look me up for negotiation, I suppose your mom mustâve asked this of you. You do have something else youâd like to tell me, donât you?â
Acacius was flabbergasted on that note. Her guesses are spot on! I canât believe it! As he took a deep breath, he managed to tamp down the swelling anxiety within him.
âThree days prior to that accident five years ago, my dad did come back to the county during his break.
He told my mom that he was in dire need of a handsome sum of cash to save my grandmaâs life,â he voiced.
Angeline kept her lips buttoned and listened to that young man.
The latter then added, âCoincidentally, there was a stranger, a man, who came to my dad and offered him one million as long as he agreed to tamper with the brake of the car belonging to the Sorelles to induce a fake road accident on their way to the jewelry press conference, thus preventing the Sorelles from signing the contract.â
âSo, you all accepted the money?â hissed Angeline through gritted teeth.
Her visage was as grim as death.
The young man was shocked by her reaction. He stammered, âB-Because my grandma was in grave condition, and my dad⦠H-He couldnât just stand idly by. Besides, we thought that itâd only be causing a vehicle breakdown. We didnât know itâd be that seriousâ¦â
âHave you all damaged your brains? Why did you accept the money? Didnât you realize that youâre also the accomplices in the murder?â bellowed Angeline hysterically, slamming her palm on the table. Her eyes were bloodshot in an instant.
Alas, hatred inundated her. Yet, the pent-up resentment within her could find no way out.
Had they not colluded with one another to set up a trap like that, my parents wouldnât have gone with the wind at such a tender age! Were my parentsâ lives that insignificant? How could they only care about their own loved ones?
Noticing the seething bitterness in Angelineâs gaze, Acacius was so terrified that his face paled to a ghastly white. He hastily cowered behind the chair, shivering the whole time with his head hung low.
Right then, Sylas stepped in from outside, handing Angeline a glass of water. âPlease calm down, Ms.
Sorelle,â he comforted.
Angeline took the glass over with her trembling hand and gulped down a mouthful of water. Only then did she manage to calm down a little.
âThank you.â
With that said, Angeline was no longer glaring daggers at Acacius. Even so, the animosity she felt toward the latter did not diminish in the slightest.
Acacius, in turn, tightened his grip on the chair legs while sizing the woman up with a fearful gaze. He took a moment before parting his lips and cautiously putting forward a question.
âMiss, I apologize to you on behalf of my dad. You wouldnât take legal action against my family, would you?â
âThis case will be reopened, and the court will return the verdict should there be any legal consequences!â commented Angeline in a deep voice.
She grabbed her purse from the table and was all ready to leave.
Nevertheless, before taking her leave, she still tilted her head to peek at the already devastated Acacius, uttering sternly, âIâll still keep my promise to you. Tomorrow, Iâll arrange for someone to assist with your dadâs transfer and make sure he has access to the best health facilities.â
As soon as she dropped the sentence, she departed from the cafe without hesitation.
Deep down, she knew that her decision to save Delroyâs life would serve as a form of solace to her deceased parents in heaven. Besides, if her parents were still alive, she believed that they would also wish for nothing less than that.
On the journey back, the pin-drop silence in the car only served to enmesh Angeline in the memory of her past. Tears began to well up in her eyes as misery assailed her heart. However, she endured the grief, never allowing a single drop of tears to escape from her eyes.
Seeing the situation she was in, Sylas pressed a button on the dashboard to play some feel-good music.
âMs. Sorelle, the dead canât be resurrected. Look on the bright side of life,â came Sylasâ advice.
âMm. Thank you.â
Like a charm, Angelineâs attention was indeed diverted by the pleasant melody. With a tad of deliberation, she queried, âCan you help me with something?â
âIs it about transferring Mr. Quast to another hospital? Donât worry. Mr. Golding has long sent someone to arrange for a ward. Weâll send Mr. Quast back to Hallsbay tonight,â reported Sylas.
Angeline was bereft of speech upon hearing his words.
She pursed her red lips as a surge of warmth rushed to her heart. Evander can really tell whatâs on my mind all the time, and heâs always one step ahead of me in making those arrangements. With him around, I really do feel at ease.
She fished out her phone and sent Evander a message on WhatsApp to express her appreciation.
Right after the text was delivered, a news article abruptly popped up on the screen.
It was written on the headline: Breaking news! The daughter-in-law of Yiurk Group gives birth to a son in Hallsbay Central Hospital today! Joseline Sorelle becomes a mother while the Yiurk family welcomes their very own baby boy!
