Evander leaned against the chair and met Old Mr. Chandlerâs gaze. He was not in a hurry as he said, âNo.â
âThen you should be clear by now. Iâm sure you understand the situation of the Chandler family.
Although we canât compete with the Golding family, weâre not that far off.â
Old Mr. Chandler frowned, and his voice turned deep and cold. âAngeline is my granddaughter.
Although Iâve neglected on disciplining her all these years which resulted in her doing such a reckless thing, the Chandler family will not allow her to become someoneâs mistress. Hence, I hope youâll leave her. If you think the existence of her daughter is bothering you, Iâll take up the responsibility of raising her.â
Evander was silent as he listened to what Old Mr. Chandler had to say. He then frowned and replied, âI think you must be mistaken. Angeline is not my mistress, and Floretta is not her daughter.â
A hint of surprise appeared on Old Mr. Chandlerâs face, but his gaze was still cold and sharp.
âYou want my granddaughter to become your childâs stepmother? Are you looking down on the Chandler family?â
Following his questions, the atmosphere in the cafe became tense.
The waiter brought the coffee and a jug of water at that moment. Evander was quick to read the room and poured the water into a glass for Old Mr. Chandler.
âIf that day comes, Iâll make my relationship with Angeline publicly known and make her my wife.â
âWhy should I believe you?â
Old Mr. Chandler huffed. He narrowed his eyes, and a sly glint flashed past them.
âThere are many grudges among the prestigious families. I know my granddaughter well. Her personality is not suitable for a prestigious family. Even if the two of you get married, there is a possibility that youâll get divorced.â
Upon hearing that, Evanderâs grip on his cup tightened. He, indeed, had not considered the problem Old Mr. Chandler mentioned.
However, from the moment he chose Angeline, his decision was firm. Since he had decided to be with her, he would never let go.
âIf it comes down to that, I will draw up a contract beforehand and transfer all my properties to her to ensure that sheâll live without worry.â
Old Mr. Chandler was shocked to hear what Evander said. His words sounded like a casual remark.
However, with his reputation in the business world, it would be impossible for him to make an empty promise.
Old Mr. Chandler took a sip of water before sighing as though he had given in.
âNot only do they look alike, but her personality is similar to my daughterâs. Once theyâve set their heart on something, they must see it to the end.â
He paused for a moment before he continued, âBack then, I threw a tantrum and refused to stay in contact with my daughter. That caused her to be framed, resulting in a car accident. I didnât even get to see her for the last time!â
As Old Mr. Chandler said that, his emotions became unstable, and he shifted his gaze away. His eyes were filled with sadness, and it looked like he had aged another ten years instantly.
âIâve failed Cynthia. That is why I donât dare to face Angeline for all these years. However, I want to make her stronger, so she wonât have a life as short as her motherâs.â
âYou shouldnât have done that. For a child, nothing is more important than family.â
Evanderâs tone was laced with a hint of grievance. He stared at the regretful look on Old Mr. Chandlerâs face and could not understand why the latter was so harsh on Angeline.
It could have been because he lost his parents when he was younger, but at least he had his grandfather to care for him. On the other hand, Angeline had to defend herself against the various schemes of the Sorelle family all alone.
He remembered when they first met. He had mistaken her for purposely getting close to him to steal the shares of Sorelle Group. Now that he thought about it, he felt his heart ache for her.
In the end, Old Mr. Chandler did not reply to him. The two of them left the cafe and saw Angeline holding onto Florettaâs hand as they walked out of the graveyard and waited in front of the car.
Angeline stared at Old Mr. Chandler warily before turning to look at Evander. The two had peaceful expressions as though no argument had happened.
âIâll leave first.â
Old Mr. Chandlerâs voice was not as cold as before, but he kept his sentences brief. âIf youâre free, come and visit the family. Your mother left something for you with me.â
After saying that, he stared at Angeline. His assistant opened the car door, and he got in.
Angeline was shocked as she stayed rooted to the ground. She could not believe that Old Mr. Chandler would say such a thing to her.
What in the world did they talk about in the cafe?
Seeing that Old Mr. Chandlerâs had started up and they were ready to leave, Angeline hurried over and said, âBe careful on your way back.â
That was the first time she talked to Old Mr. Chandler without arguing with him. He looked at Angelineâs face outside the window and suddenly thought of something.
He saw a younger version of Cynthia in her. He could see the younger Cynthia sitting on the rocking chair and singing the song she had learned at school for him.
At that time, the two of them were inseparable.
As he thought of that, tears brimmed his eyes. He held up a wrinkled hand to wipe them away.
Outsiders could never understand the love that he had for his daughter.
Unfortunately, there was no cure for regret.
He now understood that reputation and a personâs roots were not so important.
People could only clearly see the most important thing when they were on their deathbeds.
âCynthia, Iâll take good care of your daughter.â Old Mr. Chandler shifted his gaze and let out a heavy sigh.
As Old Mr. Chandlerâs car went further out of her sight, Angeline finally looked away and got into Evanderâs car with Floretta.
The silence in the car made Angeline think of many things. She looked at Evander, who was driving, and could not help but ask, âWhat did you say to my grandfather?â
Evander skillfully turned the steering wheel. He teased, âTo let me marry you.â
Angeline was rendered speechless.
Her eyes went wide as she was dumbfounded by what he had just said.
On the other hand, Floretta got what she wished for. She clapped her hands excitedly and cheered happily, âWow, thatâs amazing! Daddy, did you already prepare a diamond ring? Can I call Angel my mommy now?â
Evander did not say a word. He looked at Angeline from the rearview mirror and noticed her cheeks were tinted red. The corners of his lips curled into a teasing smile.
âDonât speak nonsense, Floretta.â
Angeline hurriedly covered Florettaâs mouth. She was afraid the young girl would call her âMommyâ
next.
Florettaâs eyes squinted because of how big her smile was. It made her look extremely cute.
She looked like she was looking forward to the day that she could call Angeline âMommy.â
Evander brought them to eat Jetroinian food. After that, he did not send Angeline immediately. Instead, he took a different road.
âWhere are you taking me?â Angeline asked as she looked at her surroundings.
âWeâre going to the mall. I booked three movie tickets,â Evander said briefly.
Upon hearing that, Angeline frowned. She unenthusiastically replied, âMr. Golding, I donât want to go elsewhere today. Please pull over.â
Evander seemed to have guessed that Angeline would say that. His gaze turned serious as he consoled her, âIf I drop you off, youâll start overthinking. Life needs to continue. You need to learn to come out of the past, and the best way to do that is to divert your attention elsewhere.â
Angeline was speechless.
His words made it difficult for her to come up with a response.
