Evander could not help but smile when he saw her concealing her emotions. Hence, he gracefully cut a piece of his steak and placed it in front of her. As if on purpose, he said, âEat more and replenish your energy. Weâll continue tonight.â
Khaff! Khaff! Angeline choked on her food, and her face flushed red.
Evander was frightfully skilled at flirting. She would have turned weak at his words if she had not been good at keeping herself composed.
Iâd better visit the Golding residence less in the future. Otherwise, Iâd be taken advantage of without even realizing it.
After lunch, Evander had to return to the office for a meeting. Not wanting to stay at the Golding residence, Angeline went upstairs to get her bag so she could leave with his car.
Before leaving, she applied several layers of liquid foundation on her neck. Still, the hickey was still visible.
Seeing Evander waiting for her by the room door brought her anger to new heights.
âLook at what youâve done. Iâm going to make you pay next time.â
Angeline was stunned when she heard the words that slipped out of her mouth. She realized she was behaving bolder in front of him.
Just as she was thinking about that, a stern female voice rang out.
âIâd like to see what youâll do to make my grandson pay.â
Angeline frowned as she realized the sudden change in atmosphere. Meanwhile, Francesca stood beside the couch downstairs, looking as if she was ready to confront a formidable enemy.
Without any hesitation, Angeline went downstairs with Evander.
Sitting on the living room couch was Valerie. Although all her hair had turned white, she still looked energetic, and her eyes were sharp as ever, as if they could see through a personâs heart.
âHello, Grandma. Why are you here?â asked Evander in a deep voice, clearly surprised by her visit.
Valerie gave a derisive snort. âHow could I not come over when you made such a major decision behind my back?â
When Evander heard that, his expression darkened. Fixing his gaze on the coffee cup on the table, he uttered firmly, âIf youâre here to change my mind, then Iâd advise you to give up on the idea. I wonât marry Olivine.â
âYouâve lost your mind!â His response infuriated Valerie. She pointed at Angeline, questioning, âAre you planning to cut ties with me over this mannerless young lady?â
Valerieâs voice was so loud that it gave Francesca a fright. The latter shuddered and fell to her knees.
Nonetheless, Evander remained silent and indifferent, despite being threatened by Valerie. Suddenly, the atmosphere in the room became tense.
Seeing that, Angeline could not help but voice out, âGrandma, perhaps we can talk this outââ
Before she could even finish her words, Valerie glared at her and slammed her walking stick hard onto the ground, yelling fiercely, âGet onto your knees!â
It annoyed Angeline to hear those words. Although Valerie was of high status, she had no right to make Angeline get to her knees when they were not related by blood.
Hence, Angeline stood still without budging an inch while she thought of a suitable response.
Seeing Angeline not doing as told, Valerie mocked furiously, âTake a good look, Evander. This is the woman youâve chosen. She didnât even greet me. Hmph. How could she not know such simple manners? Besides, I heard this woman did something humiliating five years ago. Sheâs an unwanted daughter of the Sorelle family. How great can a woman from the entertainment industry be? Sheâs not even worth being compared with Olivine.â
Every word that came from Valerieâs mouth was like a sharp dagger that stabbed into Angelineâs heart.
Especially when Valerie compared Angeline to Olivine. For a moment, Angeline felt as if she was absolutely worthless.
Suddenly, she brushed her fringe aside and said calmly, âSo, you think I seduced Evander? Well, Iâm afraid youâre wrong about that. He was the one who pursued me first. I didnât even want to accept him back then.â
She was clearly saying that to humiliate the Golding family. When Valerie heard that, her gaze darkened, and she scoffed, âAre you feeling proud of yourself, Ms. Sorelle? Youâre just a new toy for him.â
âI trust Evander,â Angeline responded determinedly, fixing her gaze on Evanderâs face. Turning to Valerie, she retorted, âYou, on the other hand, keep saying you love your grandson, but you always use him as a tool for marriage connections. Youâre even willing to coerce him just to bring benefits to the company. Have you ever thought about his feelings?â
Hearing that, Evander smiled and gave Angeline a look of approval.
He had been keeping quiet because he wanted to witness Angelineâs capabilities. After all, she was going to be the future daughter-in-law of the Golding family, and looks were not all that mattered.
So far, she had not let him down.
The way Angeline talked back upset Valerie even more, and the latter warned, âListen here, Evander.
Iâm never letting this woman marry into our family as long as Iâm alive. Ugh! How insolent!â
Knowing he had to make things clear that day, Evander approached Valerie and advised calmly, âGrandma, itâs not good to be angry all the time when youâre at such an age.â
Immediately after that, he leaned closer and whispered something into her ear.
Suddenly, Valerieâs expression relaxed, and she glanced at Angeline in shock, asking, âReally? Sheâs the granddaughter of Jeffery Chandler?â
âYes,â Evander answered calmly.
This time, Valerie finally calmed down. She then got to her feet with the help of her walking stick and scrutinized Angeline with a conflicted expression.
After a moment of silence, Valerie let out a heavy sigh and left the house in silence with the housekeeper, who had been standing by the door.
Meanwhile, Angeline watched them leave, looking utterly confused.
Although she was Jefferyâs granddaughter, they barely interacted with each other. However, the look on Valerieâs face seemed to say she had known Jeffery for many years.
What kind of relationship do they have that made her change her attitude suddenly?
At that thought, Angelineâs inquisitive gaze fell on Evander. He must know something.
Hurriedly, Angeline sat on the couch with curiosity written all over her face. âWhat did you say to your grandma just now? What relationship does my granddad have with your family?â
Evander pulled her into his embrace and stroked her brows, saying with a deep voice, âThe Golding family has no relationship with your granddad. Itâs just that I heard my grandpa saying he was in the same troop as your granddad when he was younger. As for the details, Iâm not too sure.â
Angelineâs brows furrowed slightly as she finally understood the situation.
So, theyâre old friends. They seem to have a deep relationship, but why havenât they met up in so many years?
Regardless, that was the end of the conversation.
In the afternoon, Evander needed to go to the company to attend a meeting, so he dropped Angeline off at a high-end mall nearby.
Instead of asking her objective for going there, he pulled a black and gold card out of his wallet and handed it to her.
âThe money in here should be enough for you to buy the entire mall,â he remarked.
The sight of the card shocked Angeline, and she hurriedly waved her hand in dismissal. âNo way. I canât accept such an expensive gift.â
Evander scowled at her reaction. âTake it. Itâll make things easier when you take Floretta out in the future. That rascal wants everything she sees.â
