âI donât need your permission to leave.â
Evander, who was already irritated enough, shot Jacob a cold glare as his tone reeked with harshness.
âFor your information, Angeline is my woman!â
Following his words, Jacob froze in place. He then looked at Angeline in disbelief and asked in a daze, âAngie, is what he said true?â
Her expression changed when she heard his question, and a trace of guilt appeared in her eyes.
âJacob, thank you for looking after me today. Iâm very grateful for your help, but I only see you as a friend and a younger brother.â
Her tone was particularly solemn, making her stance clear.
Before this, she didnât spell things out clearly because she assumed that Jacobâs infatuation for her was only temporary and that the young man only thought of her as a breath of fresh air. However, at present, she realized that she had underestimated the feelings Jacob had for her.
Furthermore, she was able to comprehend Evanderâs feelings for her following the current incident. He didnât only think of her as a mere pastime. Instead, he genuinely cared for her.
When his tender, soothing voice comforted her, her heart opened up to him, and she gradually accepted him.
Evander would be her one and only choice if she were to ever get married one day.
The manâs lips curved to form a faint smile when he heard Angelineâs response. She didnât deny our relationship like she usually would, and thatâs a big step. All the troubles Iâve gone through are worth it.
Subsequently, he carried Angeline out of the hospital and brought her to his car before giving Roger a call.
A confused expression descended on Angelineâs face as she sat in the passenger seat. Iâm not close to Roger, so why would Evander tell him about the allergy?
As though he had noticed the puzzlement on her face, Evander reached out to envelope Angelineâs cold hand in his palm as he drove out of the parking lot. With a tone more gentle than ever, he said, âDonât worry. Youâll find out when we get there.â
Hearing his words of assurance, Angeline tactfully kept silent instead of asking any more questions.
Evander adjusted the air conditioner in the car to a suitable temperature and helped her recline her seat so she could rest comfortably, but still, her thoughts were a tangled mess.
She couldnât stop thinking about the possibility of disfigurement.
Evander drove as fast as he could, and they arrived at the Golding family in no time.
As soon as they entered the residence, they heard Rogerâs panicked scream coming from the backyard of the mansion, echoing across the living room.
âMy goodness! Who came into my garden and plucked all my flowers?â
Frightened by the sudden scream, Angeline instinctively hid behind Evander and looked toward the direction of the garden anxiously.
Not long after, they saw Roger approaching in a huff, stomping his muddy boots while clad in his work attire. As he walked, he bellowed, âFrancesca!â
âWhatâs all the fuss about?â Evander chimed in with a dissatisfied look. âIâll compensate for your loss.â
Hearing that, Roger looked at Evander gleefully.
âEvander, even if you have money, you wonât be able to buy those flowers as they are rare herbs.â
Herbs?
Angeline caught the important message in his words, but she furrowed her brows as she was not sure what he meant.
Roger approached them, and when he saw Angelineâs face, he clicked his tongue. âD*mn! What happened to your face, Mrs. Golding?â
Feeling embarrassed, Angeline quickly lowered her head and covered her face.
âIâm not sure. The doctor said it was a fungal infection. Donât look at my face. Iâm heading up first.â
As a rare sense of inferiority surfaced in her eyes, she prepared to head upstairs.
However, Evander grabbed her arm and stopped her from leaving before glaring at Roger impatiently.
âStop your nonsense. See if thereâs any way you can help her.â
Roger was momentarily at a loss for words before he complained with a tone of resignation, âHow am I supposed to check her out when sheâs standing so far away from me?â
Hearing that, Evander produced the doctorâs report that was prepared by the hospital and threw it over to Roger. âHave a good look. I know youâll be able to deal with it.â
Roger flipped through the report, and a look of surprise gradually emerged on his face.
âMrs. Golding, how did you get infected by such a disease? Youâre a rich celebrity, so why did you resort to eating wild vegetables?â he asked.
âI didnât.â
âDoes that mean someone else sabotaged you? Who did something like this? The nerve of them to harm Evanderâs woman! That person has a death wish!â Roger fumed indignantly as if he was the one who had an allergic reaction.
Evander tried to tamp down his anger as he asked the only question he was concerned about, âIs there any solution to this?â
As Angeline listened to their conversation, she realized something and began seeing Roger in a new light.
I didnât expect him to know medical skills. But isnât he the vice president of Golding Group? Evander brought me over to see him straight away, so does that mean he is more skillful than the doctors in the hospital?
âIs there anything you can do, Mr. Jantz?â
Angeline looked at Roger hopefully.
However, the look on Rogerâs face was solemn as he brooded for about a minute before he looked toward her with his captivating eyes.
He said slowly, âItâs not impossible. Thereâs a way we can try, but I canât guarantee full recovery.
Thereâs probably a seventy-percent chance.â
âThatâs a low probability.â
Evander was not pleased with what he heard. He looked doubtfully at Roger.
Roger rolled his eyes and defended himself indignantly, âThe culprit who harmed Mrs. Golding was dead set on ruining her life, so they showed no mercy at all. If she were left in the hospitalâs care, she wouldâve already been disfigured.â
Rogerâs words hit the sore spot in Angelineâs heart. She clenched her fists tightly in resentment and bit the bullet.
âMr. Jantz, Iâm willing to believe in you.â
It didnât matter even though there was only a seventy percent chance of full recovery. The odds were good enough for Angeline.
As long as there was a tiny trace of hope, she was willing to give it a go.
Angelineâs words were pleasing to Rogerâs ears. His lips curled into a smile as he said happily, âGood.
Wait for me here. Iâll go upstairs and get ready. Iâll call you when Iâm done.â
Subsequently, he got up from the couch and headed upstairs.
Angeline looked at Rogerâs leaving figure, and her heart was still filled with doubt. Despite knowing it was not the right time to voice her doubts, she still asked, âWhatâs going on? Isnât Roger the vice president of the company?â
Evander held her hand and led her over to the couch before pouring her a glass of warm water and passing it to her.
Then, he slowly explained, âRoger was the only son, so his parents really hoped that he could take over the company. However, Roger was obsessed with medicine ever since he was young. Thus, he only held a titular position in Golding Group and seldom involved himself with the matters of the company.â
After hearing Evanderâs explanation, she slowly understood the situation.
She couldnât help mumbling, âI assumed Roger was a rich heir who knew nothing but to enjoy life. I didnât know he had such a backstory.â
âThose who donât know him well will usually think that way.â
Evander took a sip of his coffee as his expression gradually morphed into a serious one. âThose flowers in the backyard are not just ordinary plants. They are very rare herbs, and each type consists of different poisons.â
