Angeline remained silent. She knew Evander was simply explaining why he was so nervous when she had only suffered a minor cut on her hand before this.
No wonder Iâve never seen such unusual-looking plants before. Turns out those are medicinal herbs.
At that thought, Angeline was confused. âBut why are they planted in your house?â
âItâs just some nonsensical logic from Roger, claiming that my backyard is an auspicious place in terms of geomancy.â
Upon hearing that, Angeline couldnât help but chuckle softly as she spoke wryly. âI suppose he chose your backyard because your house is relatively safe.â
She was smart enough to guess it right away.
Evanderâs mood improved significantly when he saw her smile. He then leaned against the couch and explained in a low voice, âYes. Rogerâs father raided a lot of the medicinal herbs developed by Roger and confiscated them all. Thus, itâs safest to leave the herbs with me.â
Evander, of course, would never engage in any business that would result in a loss.
Rogerâs medical skills were exceptional. He had treated many people acquainted with Evander that suffered from unusual and complex conditions throughout the years.
All of a sudden, a thin layer of cold sweat beaded Angelineâs forehead, and terror flashed across her eyes.
If Evander hadnât stopped her in time previously, she wouldâve been poisoned.
As the two of them were chatting, Rogerâs solemn voice was heard from upstairs.
âCould you bring Mrs. Golding upstairs now, Evander?â
Roger was dressed in a black protective suit and gloves, but they had no idea what he had been up to upstairs. A strong aroma of medicinal herbs wafted from the room.
Evander took Angeline up to the third floor. It was originally a small rooftop but had since been turned into a laboratory by Roger.
There were rows of cabinets lined up in the large space. They were either filled with books or different kinds of rare and precious medicinal herbs.
Even though Angeline had prepared herself for the unexpected, she was still taken aback by what she saw in front of her.
She couldnât believe that there was a place like that in the Golding residence, for Evander and the others had never mentioned it before.
An enormous wooden tub filled with black liquid was placed in the center of the laboratory. For some unknown reason, the liquid in the tub was bubbling.
Roger walked over and poured a bottle of greenish liquid into the tub. Immediately, a foul and pungent smell permeated the room.
Angeline hastily covered her nose, but she was still nauseated by the stench.
âYou want her to bathe in this?â
Evander frowned, disgust evident in his expression.
âYes. Mrs. Golding is experiencing an allergic reaction all over her body. The application of ointment will have a slow effect. In contrast, this refined concoction will help increase her chances of recovery.â
As he spoke, Roger had already mixed the medicinal liquid and was looking at Angeline with a solemn expression.
âTake off your clothes and get inside the tub, Mrs. Golding. Evander and I will go out later. Remember, donât come out for at least half an hour. Weâll remind you when the time is up.â
âOkay.â
Angeline nodded. Her face turned slightly pale as she stared at the wooden tub.
However, she had no other choice but to hope for the best.
It was better for her to endure the pungent stench than to live with the terrible consequences of disfigurement.
Even though Evander had been dragged out of the room by Roger, he was still concerned for Angeline as he lingered outside the door.
âAre you sure this concoction wonât cause any side effects?â Feeling doubtful, Evander couldnât help but question Roger.
âEvander, are you so concerned about Angeline that you donât even trust my medical skills?â Roger said bluntly with a darkened expression.
There was nothing much Evander could say upon hearing Rogerâs words. His steely cold gaze was tinged with worry as he remained silent.
Roger sighed in disbelief as he gazed at Evander.
As Evanderâs old friend, Roger knew him to be a relentless and decisive person. He simply couldnât wrap his head around the fact that Evander would care so much for a woman.
He then produced a cigarette from his pocket and offered it to Evander while patting the latterâs shoulder, reminding him in a low voice, âEvander, if you truly care for Angeline, youâd better find the culprit who harmed her.â
Upon hearing those words, a cold glint appeared in Evanderâs eyes. Lighting up the cigarette with a lighter, he puffed out a cloud of smoke before replying, âI know what to do.â
He didnât need to guess to know who was the culprit.
Once Angeline became disfigured and her career was destroyed, the person who would benefit the most from that was, of course, Joseline.
In the past, Evander and the Sorelle family had always stayed out of each otherâs way. As long as his interests were not affected, he would never take the initiative to harm anyone.
But now, for Angelineâs sake, he would have to make an exception.
Anyone who hurt Angeline, be it someone from the Sorelle family or the Yiurk family, I swear Iâll never let them off!
He then turned to look in the direction where Angeline was, concerned about her current condition.
Furthermore, having to soak inside the wooden tub would be an unpleasant experience.
Initially, when Angeline removed her clothing and stepped into the wooden tub, the water had a cooling sensation. However, the longer she stayed inside the water, the higher the temperature rose.
In the end, it got so hot that she was almost out of breath, and her cheeks were burning. Despite that, Angeline remembered what Roger had said to her. No matter how uncomfortable she was, she had to endure every moment of it.
Half an hour later, Angeline finally emerged from the wooden tub.
Upon undergoing treatment, she felt unusually relieved as if she had been reborn.
The rashes on her arms also reduced visibly.
Having changed into a fresh set of clothes, Angeline came out of the guest room to see both men sitting in the living room, sipping coffee with smiles on their faces.
Evander noticed her presence, and tenderness soon filled his deep, abyss-like eyes.
âHow are you feeling now?â
âMuch better. I donât feel as terrible as before. What kind of herbs did you mix into the concoction, Roger? Itâs really amazing!â
Roger sipped his coffee slowly and spoke in a gleeful tone.
âItâs top secret. You wouldnât even know what they are even if I told you about them. However, based on your complexion, you should have a high possibility of recovering, Mrs. Golding.â
This is great news!
An undisguised look of joy emerged in Angelineâs eyes. She was incredibly impressed with Roger. Iâm sure heâd become successful if he opens a clinic!
Also, she was moved by Rogerâs dedication to researching the things he loved without seeking fame or fortune.
Shortly after, Roger advised her of several precautions, telling her that it was safe for her to go outside.
However, it was important for her to stay away from dusty places.
He then handed her some ointment that he had created so that she could apply it to her body several times a day.
Angeline felt ashamed by how often she had misunderstood Roger previously as she listened to his meticulous and caring words. She couldnât help but say to him, âThank you so much for your help, Roger. I donât even know how to repay you.â
âDonât mention it, Mrs. Golding.â
Roger waved his hand nonchalantly as he raised his brows at her and smirked. âAs for my repayment, I wonât be asking for money from you. However, I remember how much Evander enjoys your cooking, and Floretta wonât stop talking about the yummy dishes you made. Iâd really like to tryâ¦â
Upon hearing that, Angeline quickly agreed. âWhy donât you sit here and wait for a bit? Iâll go to the kitchen to whip up something for the both of you.â
After all, it would be insensitive of her to deny Rogerâs only request.
Only upon entering the kitchen did she realize Francesca was nowhere to be seen.
