Hearing that, Mark put on a goofy smile and waved at the woman. âAunt Olivine, youâre here,â he shouted excitedly.
âIâm sorry for being late. I got held up with a meeting just now.â
Olivine wore a bright red strapless dress with her long, chestnut curls draped loosely around her shoulders, looking flamboyant that day.
Apparently, she didnât attend a meeting but had been to the beauty salon instead.
She walked up to Mark and took his hand before turning to scan the crowd. Seeing no sign of Evander, she knitted her brows, and her expression darkened. I heard all parents must be present at this parent-
teacher conference, and Evander has also arranged his work beforehand. He should have arrived long ago. Now that the parent-teacher conference is about to start, I wonder why he hasnât arrived yet.
As time passed, all the parents walked into the school and took their children from their respective teachers.
Only Floretta, standing on her tiptoes, remained in her spot and merely stared at the gate.
Seeing her like that made her teacher feel bad. She walked over and comforted, âFloretta, are you sure you have informed your parents today is the day?â
âYes, Iâm sure,â Floretta responded in a clear voice.
âItâs all right. Maybe they are trapped in a traffic jam, or something has held them up. Weâll wait for them a little longer together.â
Upon hearing that, Mark snapped his head back and shot Floretta a sly smile. âTeacher, Floretta is spouting nonsense. She doesnât have a mommy. No one will come and attend the parent-teacher conference with her.â
His loud voice immediately attracted the attention of the children beside him.
One after another, Markâs gang began to laugh at her.
âThatâs true. Floretta is lying. She even said she would invite a superstar to the parent-teacher conference today.â
âTeacher, I think we should just leave Floretta standing there alone. She doesnât have parents anyway.â
âAll of you, stop talking.â Floretta stomped her feet, grimacing. Tears began to well up in her eyes. Itâs not like that! Angel promised me that she would attend the parent-teacher conference today. She will not lie to me. But why? Why isnât she here yet?
âMy goodness. What nonsense are you guys talking about?â The childrenâs arguments filled the teacher with shock and disbelief, and her face turned ashen.
She never expected Floretta to be bullied by the others in school and thought things would be even worse if Evander heard that.
âTeacher, weâre telling the truth!â Mark talked back in dissatisfaction. Suddenly, he felt his head hurt and yelped. Looking at Olivine with aggravation, he asked, âAunt Olivine, why did you hit me?â
âBecause you deserved it. Promise me you wonât talk nonsense and bully Floretta ever again.â Olivine glared at him with a fierce expression. Thank goodness Evander is not around. Mark may look strong and dignified, but heâs a lazy glutton and not smart enough. If Evander heard someone bullying her precious daughter, he would have wrecked the school or even doomed the Sherrock family. Iâve already fallen to disgrace after he called off our engagement. If something else happens, the Sherrock familyâs reputation will definitely be ruined.
Olivine put on a friendly smile as she pondered. She walked up to Floretta, who was standing on the stage, and said, âFloretta, please forgive Mark for going overboard with his words. I think your daddy has been busy with work lately. He should be here in a while. Come with me first, okay?â
However, Floretta forcefully shook off Olivineâs hand with a hint of hostility on her face. âNo, I donât want to. I have parents. Angel will be here to pick me up later,â she stubbornly said.
The little girl didnât bother to spare Olivine any dignity in front of everyone.
Angeline? A tinge of jealousy instantly flashed across Olivineâs eyes. Her tone turned cold as she spoke. âAngeline wonât show up. She was riddled with the scandal of the Sorelle family, and many of her misdeeds were also exposed. I guess she should be hiding somewhere now.â
Taken aback by her words, Floretta shook her head vigorously and bit her lip hard. âNo. Angel will never flake on me.â
âDonât be naive, Floretta. This woman covets your daddyâs wealth. How can she sincerely treat you well?â Olivine bent down and patted the little girlâs head, smiling. âBe a good girl, and come with me.â
Floretta looked at her aggrievedly. As her temper flared, she reached out her hand to give Olivine a forceful push. âGo away! I donât need you.â
At the end of her words, she clenched her fists and prepared to run toward the classroom.
âSpreading false rumors is subject to legal action, Ms. Sherrock.â
It was then a cold female voice suddenly rang out.
A particularly eye-catching red sports car pulled up at the school entrance.
As the car door opened, a woman in a dark green coat carrying a designer handbag alighted from the car. Her regal aura immediately drew the attention of the crowd.
While the woman walked toward Floretta in her ten-centimeter-tall crystal heels, she raised her hand to remove her sunglasses, revealing an exquisite face.
âSorry for running late, teacher. Iâm here to pick my girl.â
She deliberately emphasized the word âmy,â making the parents in the sports field widen their mouths and exclaim in awe.
On the other hand, Mark and the other children who had laughed at Floretta earlier were dumbfounded.
Rubbing their eyes hard, they couldnât believe the woman before them would be Angeline.
âAngel!â The sadness on Florettaâs face instantly vanished. Elated, she ran toward Angeline with her arms wide open.
âBe careful.â Angeline hugged the little girl and said with a doting tone, âWhat are we going to do if you fall?â
âYou really made it! I have not seen you for so long and thought Daddy and you wonât be here today.â
Floretta pouted and stared at Angeline with misty eyes. Seeing her like that made Angelineâs heart wrenched.
âDonât cry, sweetheart.â Feeling apologetic, Angeline caressed Florettaâs face and explained, âI came a little late as I had an urgent shooting just now. But I will fulfill what Iâve promised you and wonât let others take advantage of it.â
Her last sentence was somehow intriguing. It made Olivineâs face darken, and she balled up her firsts. I have yet to settle the score with her. How dare she show herself here?
âIâm glad youâre here.â Floretta, wrapping her arms around Angelineâs neck, tilted her head and kissed Angeline hard on the cheek.
