Hmph! No one is allowed to bully my future mommy!
With that thought in mind, Floretta suddenly opened her mouth wide and bit Joselineâs arm.
âAh! Go away!â The pain that shot up her arm coupled with her frustration prompted her to shove Floretta to the ground.
âOuch!â Floretta rubbed her aching bottom and kicked her feet aggrievedly, wiping her tears as she sobbed. âThis meanie is bullying me! It hurts!â
Seeing that, Sylas hurriedly picked Floretta up from the ground and dusted the dirt off her. âAre you all right, Ms. Floretta?â he asked worriedly.
âMy bottom hurtsâ¦â Florettaâs eyes brimmed with tears as she asked in confusion, âMr. Miller, why did this old lady push me? Is it because I did something wrong?â
âNoâ¦â Sylas comforted her.
Meanwhile, when Evander saw his daughterâs piteous look, the fury in his heart boiled over. He looked at Sylas and ordered sternly, âMrs. Yiurk is suspected of being involved in a murder case. Bring her to the police station and interrogate her!â
âYes.â Sylas was more than happy to comply. He walked over to Joseline and uttered coldly, âPlease come with me, Mrs. Yiurk.â
Joselineâs delicate face was filled with dissatisfaction. She wanted to retort, but she read the room and kept quiet after seeing Evanderâs stone-cold face.
If she acted impulsively without contemplating the consequences, bigger trouble would surely befall her.
Thus, she tamped down her emotions and left the emergency room with Sylas. Before she left, she glared at Angeline vengefully, extremely dissatisfied.
Just as she exited the hospital with Sylas and was about to get in the car, the phone in her pocket rang.
She had received a text from her assistant: Everythingâs ready, Mrs. Yiurk.
Relief inundated Joseline as she read the content of the text. Then, she deleted the text swiftly as a wicked grin appeared discreetly on her face. This is such good news! Angeline will soon meet her doom. All I have to endure now is nothing!
Back at the hospital, the tension in the air cleared up after Joseline had left, and the atmosphere gradually became peaceful again.
Evander wrapped his arms around Angeline while sitting on a chair. He then removed his coat and draped it over her shivering shoulders before asking in a deep voice, âDo you need some water?â
âNo, thanks.â Angeline waved her hand before lifting her head again. Color had returned to her pale face. Puzzled, she glanced at the man beside her. âBy the way, why are you here?â
âAs Florettaâs father, isnât it my obligation to send someone to protect you two in secret since you brought my daughter away?â Evander looked and sounded indifferent and calm, as though he was speaking about a trivial matter.
Angeline understood the reason behind his action. Still breathing rapidly from the shock she had just experienced, she placed a hand on her chest and tried to calm herself down. âThank you so much for saving me just now, or I wouldâve been dead.â
Although everything was over, she was still terrified when she thought about the fact that she was so close to dying.
Evanderâs expression went taut. He stared at her with a complicated look and spoke, his tone bringing with it a profound meaning. âI donât need your gratitude.â
Hearing that, Angeline didnât know how to face him. Therefore, she lowered her head to avoid eye contact with him and said awkwardly, âMr. Golding, I donât know how I can repay your kindness. If thereâs any collaboration between Golding Group and my company, Iâll do so for free.â
Evander pursed his lips tightly, and his expression became extremely gloomy. His gaze darkened as he continued staring at Angeline. She was hugging me so tightly just a few moments ago, and now sheâs playing dumb. What superb acting skills!
However, he decided against exposing her feelings, for their relationship had just begun to improve.
If he pushed her too much, he would only make things worse.
âDaddy, Angel, whatâs wrong with you two? Did you two have a fight?â As soon as Floretta walked over to Angeline and Evander, she realized something was off. Thus, she stared at the two adults with a suspicious look.
Upon hearing that, Angeline couldnât help but regret her actions. She almost forgot about Florettaâs existence in the room. Hurriedly, she pulled the latter toward her and said gently, âWeâre absolutely fine.
Are you hurt from being pushed just now?â
Fortunately, Evander didnât disappoint Floretta by denying Angelineâs remark.
Floretta covered her mouth and chuckled softly. Then, she leaned closer to Angelineâs ear and whispered, âIâm okay. I was just pretending to be hurt so that Daddy will avenge you!â
Angeline couldnât help stealing a glance at Evander only to see him leaning against the wall calmly with his arms crossed as if he had nothing to do with the previous incident. It seemed like he had already noticed Florettaâs motives.
No wonder he wasnât too worried just now even though he cares about his daughter a lot. This father-
daughter duo surely works perfectly together, huh?
âYou cheeky little girl.â Angeline laughed, her heart filled with warmth. She caressed Florettaâs head affectionately.
A sudden realization dawned on Angeline. Ever since the first time I met Floretta, we immediately grew fond of each other. Is that because weâre blood-related? No matter how many years we had been apart, we still cherished each other because my blood runs within Floretta.
Angelineâs heart began to race when she thought of that. She didnât dare jump to conclusions before gathering substantial evidence.
However, deep down, she hoped that Floretta was really her biological daughter.
Slam!
At that moment, the door to the emergency room opened, and the doctor walked out.
Seeing that, Angeline immediately got up and walked toward the doctor. She asked with concern, âDoctor, how is my grandpaâs condition?â
âMs. Sorelle, please mentally prepare yourself for what Iâm about to tell you.â The doctor lowered his head and spoke regretfully. âOld Mr. Sorelle has been battling pneumonia for many years. Now, it has evolved into cancer. Coupled with the fact that he was just in a state of shock, his condition is worsening continuously. Iâm afraid his days are numbered. You should start preparing for his funeral just in case.â
The harsh truth dealt a heavy blow to Angeline, causing her to stagger a few steps backward while trembling. âPlease, doctor. Iâm begging you. Please save my grandpa.â
âWe did everything we could, Ms. Sorelle. Old Mr. Sorelle will be moved to a ward soon. Please take good care of him in his last few days.â
With that, the doctor nodded at Angeline and left.
Not long after, Wilfred was pushed out of the emergency room. Various tubes were attached to his body, and his condition seemed horrible.
Seeing that, Angeline could no longer keep her emotions in check. She wept as she followed Wilfred to the ward.
âDaddy, will Angel be okay?â Floretta asked worriedly while wrapping her arms around Evanderâs thigh.
âSheâs going to be okay. You should go home first. Iâll wait for her.â
After being transferred out of the emergency room, Wilfred jolted awake. He opened his eyes with much difficulty, and his voice sounded rather hoarse as he said, âThe room is so dark. Why arenât the lights switched on?â
