Subsequently, everyone erupted into discussion.
âWhat the heck is going on?â
âShe said someone stole her necklace. D*mn. Whoâd be stupid enough to steal? Weâre all rich.â
âHey, you never know, though. Greed knows no bounds.â
Siobhan told her bodyguards to block all the exits. She seemed anxious about something.
âWhatâs going on?â Zeferino walked out from backstage. He looked at Siobhan in confusion and chastised, âWhat are you doing? We have guests here.â
âHow could you say that to me, Zefe? I just lost something important.â Siobhan stomped her foot, tears welling in her eyes. She was feigning sadness. âMy father gave me that necklace on my eighteenth birthday. It means a lot to me, and now someone stole it!â
Zeferinoâs brows furrowed. He mused over the matter and solemnly said, âYou probably got careless and left it somewhere. Try to retrace your steps.â
âNo way. The only place Iâve been to is the waiting room backstage. Oh, and the restroom.â
Angelineâs face fell. She went to the bathroom? Okay, this is getting odd. She had a feeling this missing necklace was not a coincidence.
To calm everyone down, Zeferino looked at the other bodyguards. âProbably a case of lost and found.
Check the restrooms.â
âYes, sir!â The bodyguards nodded.
Just when they were about to leave, Siobhan stopped them. âWait a minute!â
She shot the guests a withering look and finally set her sights on Angeline. Then she sneered. âZefe, thereâs no need to search the restroom. Just go through all the guestsâ bags. Donât want the thief to sneak away among the confusion.â
âSiobhan!â Embarrassed, Zeferino hissed, âStop messing around.â
And then, on purpose, Siobhan raised her voice, speaking vehemently. âI am not messing around! My father bought that necklace in South Alendor. Itâs named Eternal Heart, and itâs made of a really expensive and rare diamond!â
The guests erupted into an even louder discussion, their eyes filled with anxiety. If any of them were the thief, they might be facing years in jail.
âI agree with Ms. Yiurk.â Denise stepped forth and stood in front of a table, a smug smile curling her lips.
âWe should go the extra mile and search everyone. Nothing to fear if you didnât do it.â
She took her bag out, and its contents poured out. The table was filled with her handphone, lipstick, and other trinkets. She then scanned everyone else calmly. âI did my part. Now itâs your turn.â
Now that she was already making an example, everyone else reluctantly gave followed her lead and let someone check their bags.
When it was Angelineâs turn, she shot Siobhan a cautious look and noticed she was exchanging a look with Denise. And her stomach sank. She had a bad feeling about what was to happen.
âYour turn, Ms. Sorelle,â the bodyguard ordered coldly, accepting no arguments.
Knowing she had to face this, Angeline only stayed quiet for a while, and then she placed her bag on the table so they could check it.
The bodyguard spilled all the contents of her bag out of the table, and then a dull thud echoed across the air as a glimmering necklace fell to the table.
Angelineâs face fell. She had never seen this necklace before. So how did it show up in my bag?
âOh my,â said Denise sarcastically. She approached Angeline and picked up the necklace. Feigning a surprise, she asked, âThis is Eternal Heart, isnât it?â
Eternal Heart was a sky-blue diamond, and it gleamed like the heavens under the illumination of the hallâs lights.
âYes, thatâs my necklace!â Siobhan held the edges of her dress up and approached Denise. She took a closer look at the necklace, her eyes flaring with delight. âSo itâs you! You stole my necklace, you thief!â
She gripped Angelineâs arm tightly, refusing to let go.
The guests swarmed the ladies, giving Angeline looks of disdain.
âI canât believe she did that. And sheâs a big star.â
âDonât judge a book by its cover. You never know who might be a thief. She could be a big-name celebrity.â
âThis is just embarrassing.â
Angeline was pale with anger. The discussion didnât escape her, of course, but she clenched her fists and forced herself to calm down. Not the time to argue. I need to find a way out. This is obviously a trap set up for me. Denise purposely hung onto me back in the restroom. Leaned on my bag, even. She mustâve slipped this in back then. D*mn this wench.
Angeline took a deep breath and stared at the necklace Siobhan was holding. Okay, how should I get out of this mess?
âNow you see, Zefe? Sheâs a slut and a thief. You gotta stay away from her, you hear?â Siobhan held Zeferinoâs arm, her eyes gleaming with smug delight. She didnât show it to Zeferino, however. She still had to put on her victim act in front of him.
Zeferino peered at Angeline, and then he defended her. âI think we need to look more into this, Siobhan.
We canât punish the wrong person.â
âNo! We caught her red-handed. I canât believe youâre still defending her!â
Furious, Siobhan stomped her foot and pointed accusingly at Angeline. She demanded, âI say we call the cops. We caught her in the act, and she has nothing to say for herself. Arrest her!â
âYeah! Call the cops. She has to be arrested.â
A lot of the guests agreed with Siobhanâs idea.
D*mn it. Everyoneâs taking Siobhanâs side. Zeferino was plunged into a dilemma. He had no idea how to settle the matter.
Just when all seemed to be lost, a voice boomed across the hall.
âTrying to hurt my girlfriend, are you, Mr. Levert?â
The voice commanded everyoneâs attention, and they turned their heads around.
