Chapter 11 â Betrayal
I woke up with a throbbing headache and the sounds of muffled arguments, groaning I rolled off the bed and sat up wondering where I was. Then I saw violet and her six friends all talking with Rogue at the extreme end of the room, they also seemed to be arguing about something.
How was I going to tell Rogue what I knew, I mean I didnât have any evidence and I wasnât one hundred percent sure that Violet and her goons were the ones who had attacked us.
âHere take this.â A boy, with dirty blond hair appeared in front of me carrying a glass of water. âIâm Xavierâ he added when he settled down in front of me.
âWho are you?â I asked, I knew all the new faces but this one was unfamiliar.
âIâm with the pack; violets group, but we got separated when we arrived, I only just found them.â He explained, thrusting the glass of water into my hands.
âOh.â I said, did that mean he wasnât with Violet when they attacked us, no it didnât matter these people were all dangerous and the only person I would allow myself to trust at this moment would be Rogue.
âDoes your head hurt?â Xavier asked. I nodded; he really seemed to have a kind voice and face.
âIâll get you something.â He said and went in the other direction, away from Rogue and Violet who were still arguing. Something was telling me I was digging myself deeper and deeper into trouble and I needed to get away from here as fast as I could. But I wouldnât do that unless I warned Rogue about his new friends, he could chose to believe me or not believe me, I wouldnât care at least I would have warned him about his pals.
My stomach groaned loudly reminding me that it had been a long time since I had eaten, I swung my legs over the bed and got up, I needed some time to think and something to eat before I passed out again. I would have told Rogue where I was going but I was afraid violet would shoot me again, so I sneaked out quietly.
The hall was empty, the only sounds that could be heard was the sounds my high heel made, I didnât know why but I suddenly felt vulnerable walking by myself unprotected, my heart was pounding too fast because I was so nervous.
âThis is ridiculous, what could possibly happen.â I laughed nervously.
âA lot.â Someone whispered and moments later a gun went off, and another. I was in so much of a shock that I didnât know I had been shot until I saw the blood oozing down my shoulder.
I gasped as pain zinged down my body and collapsed on the cold hard floor, I tried to call out for Rogue but I choked on the blood circulating in my throat, my arm fell like it was being pulled out of it sockets as I lay there crying softly. Black dots appeared over my eyes and I knew I was going to faint.
It must have been Violet or her goons who had shot me; they had probably seen me sneaking out and had taken the chance to finish me off once and for all. Stupid stupid, I scolded myself as darkness swallowed me.
The next time I woke up I was lying on Rogueâs lap and the pain in my shoulder had tripled, I screamed because I couldnât hold it in any longer.
âOh god Reese Iâm so sorry.â Rogue leaned over me to say. âIâm so sorry I shouldnât have left you alone.â He said his voice full of concern.
âIf she had stayed in this room like the rest of us she wouldnât have gone and gotten herself shot.â I heard Violet saying.
âYOU BITCH.â I shouted throw my teeth. âYOU DID THIS TO ME.â I half cried and half shouted.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean.â She shrieked looking at me with disgust.
âI know it was you.â I accused, I didnât have the heart to say she shot me out loud because I didnât have any proof and I wasnât sure rogue would believe me.
âI donât know what you are saying but if itâs what I think it is, then you are insane girl, I never touched you.â She yelled.
âEnough stop your bickering and where is Xavier.â Rogue yelled.
âYou should think about what I said Rogue, this girl isnât like us, if we bring her along all sheâll do is slow us down and get herself killed, if you really care about her do what Iâm suggesting.â Violet implored.
That witch what was she up to now, âRogue donât listen to her sheâs a liar.â I whispered, and cringed when pain zinged down my shoulder.
âReese, you shouldnât move or speak youâll only make it worse.â Rogue said and lifted a towel which had been placed and my injured shoulder. âDamn it whereâs Xavier.â He screamed again.
âI got it.â Xavier appeared seconds after Rogue screamed for him.
He handed Rogue a plastic bag, which he rummaged through and brought out cotton, gauze and other stuff for cleaning the wound. Rogue ripped my shirt apart to expose the wound which was still oozing blood; I had to bite my lip to stop myself from screaming when Rogue tried to remove the bullet.
âIâm so sorry.â He apologized over and over as I cried my heart out.
By the time I was stitched up, I was sore all over and my head hurt too much to talk or make any sudden movements, so I lay in Rogueâs arms taking slow breaths and praying that I didnât die.
âOk violet letâs do what you say.â Rogue said breaking the silence that had settled over the room.
I tilted my heads to look at him, âDo what?â I asked in panic, what was Violet going to let him do now.
âReese listen, I appreciate you helping me out, but I seem to be putting you in of danger every time, this is the third time that I have almost got you killed and I canât let it happen anymore.â He explained.
âSo what are you saying?â I asked dreading his reply.
âI donât think you should come with us when we leave.â He announced.
âWhat.â I said sitting up suddenly but fell down again when I was reminded I had a wounded shoulder, son of a bitch I swore quietly.
âXavier can watch her while weâre gone.â I heard violet suggesting.
âYes I think thatâs wise.â Rogue agreed.
âIâm not leaving you Rogue.â I sobbed, begging him with my eyes not to leave me, but he shook his head, and for the next four hours no matter what I said Rogue chose Violet over me, even when I told him that I thought Violet was the one who attacked us earlier he still chose her side saying I was delirious or just looking for ways for him not to send me away.
âIâm really sorry.â Xavier said as we left the hotel, where Rogue, Violet and six of her goons had departed an hour earlier.
âAre you going to kill me now?â I asked, wasnât that what Violet wanted, to get me alone so they could kill me and tell Rogue later that I had been attacked and hadnât survived.
âWhy would I want to kill you?â He asked with a puzzled frown.
Well it was either he was really innocent or was up to something sinister. All of a sudden I wished I had asked Rogue to give me one of his guns, I would have felt better and safer.
âWhere are we going?â I asked after we got into a car Xavier had procured.
âThereâs an abandoned bunkhouse a few miles from here, no one goes there and I think it would be safe for us to lay low.â He said, the car roared into life and sped forward.
âWhatever.â I mumbled.
After several minutes of silence Xavier spoke, âYou canât love Rogue.â He said softly.
My head snapped up as I stared at him, what did he mean by that, was he about to tell me to back of because Rogue was Violetâs man.
âAfter all this is over our orders are to return, if you fall in love he will still leave you in the end and you wonât see him ever again, so Reese donât fall in love.â
But it was already too late; I had fallen in love the minute I set my eyes on him.
Rogueâs POV
The look on her face when he had left her alone was something that would forever remain with him, Reese had looked at him as if he had ripped her heart out and it would never mend, but she had to understand that she couldnât come with them or she would die.
This was a dangerous mission, he was working on and only trained people such as himself should be allowed to get involved, Reese wasnât strong enough.
âWeâre almost there.â Violet whispered behind him.
There had been a time when he looked at violet all he wanted was to devour her, but he had gotten over her when he realized she was too ambitious and was only using him as a means to an end.
âAre you sure thatâs the factory where the virus is being manufactured.â Rogue asked.
Hs e gave him a look that said she was offended by his question, âof course it is, I triple checked it before we came to find you.â She said.
If what she was saying was indeed true then he had found the head of the of the snake, once he cut it off he would be able to stop the epidemic and billions of people would be saved.
âSurprisingly itâs not well guarded, I suppose thatâs because they think no one will find it.â violet announced.
âSheâs a liar, sheâs the one who tried to kill us.â Reese accusations started to ring in his ears, could she be right? No Violet maybe ambitious but she wouldnât try to kill him, they had once being in love surely Reese was mistaken.
âWeâre here.â John announced, he was the one who had been driving them the whole time.
Rogue nodded, he didnât know how many armed men were in the ware house but with his powers and the seven other people he had with him, everything should be all right.
Violet decided they should approach the warehouse from the back; they pulled out their guns and prepared themselves for a fight. Tip toeing they circled the building first before they entered.
The minute rogue entered he felt something was out of place, he couldnât put his finger on it but something was really wrong.
âRogue.â Violet called from behind him.
âWhat.â He whispered not turning around until he heard the sound of a gun readying to fire.
âIâm sorry but I have to do this.â Violet said as he turned around, she raised the gun to his forehead, Rogue looked at the other guys behind him for help but they just stood there watching him with indifference.
âViolet what are you doing.â Rogue asked stalling, he pressed the red button on his watch and smiled inwardly, he half believed Reese which was why he had asked Xavier to follow them slowly and wait till he gave the signal. The only problem was he didnât know how far behind Xavier was.
âI was somebody in our world, if you change things Iâll be nothing, I want things to remain the way it is back in our world.â she spat at him bitterly.
âare you insane I have to change things or too many people would die, and where we live is not the ideal living conditions one should have, look around you, thereâs clean air and we can go out anytime we want to and do anything we want to and the food, donât even get me started with the food, its way better than the disgusting crap, they serve us there.â Rogue shouted.
âBut back there Iâm, something, back here, no one knows me. Itâs like Iâm invincible so I want everything back home to stay the same even though the conditions are not ideal.â Violet yelled.
âYouâre insane woman.â Rogue snapped.
âIâ sorry but I canât have you messing things up.â Violet said, a gun went off and someone dropped on the floor dead.
To be continued
Ok in the next chapter Iâll tell you what and who Rogue is and why heâs on earth and weâll know who died. But who do you think died.
