Chapter 12 – The Truth

“Rogue’s in trouble.” Xavier announced after almost an hour of silence.

“Is he now?” I said sarcastically, didn’t I warn him going with violet was a bad idea! Let him be in trouble I don’t care.

“We have to hurry or he might die.” Xavier added and drove faster down the empty road.

“What.” I almost shouted sitting up straight. “Where is he? Can we help him?” I asked in an anxious voice.

“Yes I’ve got a trace on him.” Xavier said but there was a worried look on his face, “rogue thought perhaps you might be telling the truth, but there was no way to find out until he tricked them into believing he was on their side.” Xavier explained. “I can’t believe violet is what you say she is, why would she want to stop us from saving everyone.” He punched the staring wheel in frustration.

“Xavier you have to tell me everything, I need to know exactly what is happening, what are you guys and why are you here.” I asked. I needed to know the truth before I died from not knowing.

“Let’s find Rogue and I promise I’ll tell you everything you need to know ok.” He promised, I nodded in agreement and settled down to relax but quickly remembered that Rogue’s life was in danger and started fidgeting again.

Two minutes later we came to a halt in front of an abandoned warehouse, Xavier got down, brought out guns and handed one to me. The gun was heavier than I thought it would be.

“Er Xavier I don’t know how to shoot a gun.” I told him sheepishly, Rogue was in trouble, he probably needed my help and I didn’t know how to shoot a gun.

“It’s really easy.” Xavier said and demonstrated quickly how to fire a weapon. “Got it.” he asked after the demonstration.

“I think so.”

“Let’s go.” He grabbed my hand and we went storming into the warehouse, from a distance we heard people arguing

“You’re insane woman.” I heard Rogue yelling.

“I’ sorry but I can’t have you messing things up.” Violet replied, then I saw her preparing to fire.

“Xavier do something.” I hissed at him forgetting I had a gun myself.

He nodded and pointed the gun at violet but one of the guys behind violet shifted his position in the last minute and got hit with the bullet instead. From there everything was chaos, gun shots flying everywhere, people screaming and muttering curses.

From my hiding position I saw one of violet’s goons throwing a silver canister on the ground, it wasn’t long before, the whole room was enveloped with blue smoke, I saw violet and her goons escaping through the back door, but I didn’t think rogue and Xavier saw them because they were blindsided.

I wasn’t so stupid that I was about to go after them alone, especially when I had a wounded shoulder.

“Xavier…..where’s Reese.” Rogue shouted.

“I’m here.” I shouted in a random direction because I didn’t know where he was.

“Are you ok.” he asked his voice full of concern.

“Yeah am ok.” I replied.

‘We need to find our way out of here; the gun shots must have attracted some attention.” Xavier advised.

We had to wait for a couple of minutes for the smoke to clear so that we could find our way out. Outside it had begun to rain, I didn’t know if it was rogue doing it or not.

“We need to find somewhere safe and lay low for a while.” Xavier announced.

‘’yeah yeah I know.” Rogue replied.

“What about violet and her buddies.” I asked concerned, I was sure they wouldn’t back off; they would definitely come back and mount another attack.

“We’ll deal with them but right now we need to leave before the cops show up.” Xavier said. I nodded and the three of us got into Xavier’s car and drove off, I must have fallen asleep because the next time I woke up I was been shaken awake by Rogue.

“We’re here.’ He announced.

I sat up rubbing my eyes, it was very dark but I could see a building structure outlined in the shadows. “Where are we?”

“Somewhere safe.” Rogue answered helping me get up. “Xavier has made a fire, so you won’t be cold.”

The Inside of the building smelled of dead rats and garlic, I choked as the foul smell surrounded, “this place smells awfully bad.” I complained.

“Reese please don’t start, this is the only place we could find that I was sure violet wouldn’t trace us to.” He said grimly, at the mention of violet he went stiff. Did that mean he still has feelings for her after everything she had done?

“Fine.’ I muttered and walked away from him angrily, Xavier was making eggs, but I had suddenly lost my appetite, I sat next to Xavier glumly and was immediately enveloped by the smell of frying eggs.

“What did he do to you now?” Xavier whispered.

“Do you think he has feelings for violet?” I asked.

“I DO NOT HAVE FEELINGS FOR THAT WITCH.” Rogue answered making both of us jump. After both boys had eaten and settled down I decided to ask Xavier to tell me the truth since he had promised to tell me everything once we found Rogue.

“Xavier I want answers.” I said. He looked at Rogue as if to ask permission.

“I’ll tell her everything.” Rogue answered.

Nervous about what I was about to hear, by heart began to thump faster, as I waited to hear the words.

“First of all Reese none of us is an alien.” Rogue said with a wide smile.

I frowned but then if he wasn’t an alien, why did he fall out of the sky and why was it that he could make it rain and move objects with his mind.

“I can’t believe you thought I was an alien.” He added laughing; I didn’t find it funny so I continued to frown at him.

“We’re just like you……very human.” he explained.

“But…..” I started to say but didn’t know how to complete my sentence.

“I know you don’t really understand and I will explain, like I said we are very human but were not from this time, we are 60 years from the future, its 2071 in our time.”

I gasped unable to believe what my ears were hearing. The future, Rogue was from the bloody future! He wasn’t an alien?!

“Ok…..why are you here then and how can you do the things you do if you’re human.” I asked still stunned.

“Reese I don’t know why I can do those things, I’ve been like that since I was born, I’ve searched for answers as to why I was that way but I’ve never found anything. All I know is I was born that way.” He said glumly.

“oh.” I said, going over everything he had said.

“and the reason why we’re here is in three months or maybe less, a company known as Pinerose pharmaceuticals is going to release dangerous virus into a crowded in this town, their aim would be to infect as many people as they can so they can in turn manufacture an antidote for everyone, by so doing they would hope to gain billions of dollars because once the virus is released most people would give their life savings just to get a cure. The problem is once they do this, the virus will evolve and the cure they have developed won’t work and if we let that happen, 94 percent of the world population will die from this virus, that’s why we are here to stop it all from happening.”

“huh.” I said shocked, I looked at Xavier thinking maybe all this was some kind of a joke but they were dead serious. “What are we going to?” I asked horrified.

“Well we are trying to track down the virus, but what we have discovered is, it’s only a section of the Pinerose company that are involved in developing the virus, the rest which is roughly 73 percent do not have any idea about this whole thing.” Rogue explained.

“So how do we track the other percent that know about the virus and stop them?”

“well doctor Davies was one of our leads but unfortunately I had to shoot him because he was going to kill me, but we know that, Pinerose will give the virus to twelve people and these twelve people will release the virus into a crowded atmosphere, so that lots of people will be infected, doctor Davies was one of the people releasing the virus that’s why the flu epidemic has started already, but I killed him so either someone will take his place or not.” Rogue explained.

“I still don’t understand.” I said.

“fine let me make make it simple, twelve people have been stationed all over this town, and for the next three months all twelve of them will release the virus, which comes in the form of a flu in a crowded area one at a time, until the whole town is infected and hopefully other neighboring towns will catch the disease too, after which Pinerose will come up with a quick miraculous cure and save everyone, and in the process they will make lot of money.”

“But the drug will evolve and the antidote won’t work and more than 5 billion people will die.” Xavier added.

“So why doesn’t violet want you guys to stop all this from happening.” I asked.

Xavier and rogue exchanged looks, “it’s a long story actually. After 97 percent of human died, we realized that the rest of us, the three percent couldn’t stay on earth any longer and so the best brains left in the world came up with a plan to send the rest of us to the moon and the rest to other planets.” Xavier said.

“The moon.” I gasped.

“Yes the moon, but you no one can live on the moon or on the other planets forever, because you can’t plant stuff or breathe there, so for thirty years we’ve been building a time travel machine so that we can come to the past and stop all of this from happening.”

“but that doesn’t explain why violet won’t let you guys do your job.” I put in.

“Violet is insane.” Rogue burst out. “back in our time, she was what you call very popular, people respected her and worshipped her because she made scientific discoveries that enabled us to live on the moon, she’s afraid if we change all that all her life’s work would have amounted to nothing and so she prefers that everyone dies so that she can remain popular back in our time.” Rogue added.

“But…. But that’s just insane.” I said, she wanted everyone to die so she could remain popular?!

“Touché.” Rogue and Xavier said in unison.

“So where do we go from here.” I asked.

“Well we are running out of time, in six days the first major virus will be released and we have to be there to stop the black angel.”

“Black angel.” I asked puzzled.

“That’s what we call them, the ones who are going to release the drug, we call them black angels.” Xavier explained.

“we also know where the virus will be released and the dates but we don’t know what the black angel that is going to release it looks like, so we’re are going to have to wait, for the next six days until it’s time for the virus to be released and hopefully catch this black angel before he or she kills everyone.” Rogue explained.

“But that isn’t good enough, what if we can’t stop them in time.” I complained.

“Then we’ll move to plan b.” rogue announced.

“What is plan b?” I asked.

“We must find David Hannigan, back in our time he was trying to develop a cure but he died before he could finish, and in this world he’s still alive. We’ve bee trying to locate him but it’s hard, once we find him we can show him all his research and hopefully he’ll be able to finish what he started.” Rogue explained.

“Well that good news right.”I asked.

“it is, the only problem is we have to find him before violet does, because if she finds him first she’ll kill him and then we’ll be left with no choice but to wait until the black angels come out to release the drug and stop them.” Rogue said.

“And if we fail?”

“Then most people you love and care about will die.”
