Chapter 7 â Save Me
Itâs been Seven days since I last saw Rogue and so many things have happened, the flu virus has spread around town faster and the number of people infected has risen to 200 but that was the least of my worries, so long as everyone I knew and cared about was safe I could care less what happened. What really concerned me about these days was Rogue; I was filled with anxiety wandering what had happened to him.
Most of my days I spent at the storage room waiting for him to return but he never did.
âReese hurry up.â My dad called impatiently.
âComing dad.â I shouted back and shoved my pencils and notebook into my bag; today I was starting my nursing internship at the Saint Grace Medical Hospital and I couldnât afford to be late.
âWhat the devil were you doing upstairs?â My dad scolded when I climbed into his SUV.
âNothing lets go before Iâm late, I heard the supervisor is really mean.â I said and I could have sworn I saw my dad rolling his eyes but it happened so quickly that I wasnât sure.
âBe very careful and follow every instruction they give you, that hospital is filled with patients who have caught the flu and I donât want you being careless around them do you hear me.â
âYes dad, Iâm not dumb.â I said sarcastically and he gave me a look that said I should to stop being such a wise ass.
Twenty minutes later we came to a halt in front of the hospital. I got out, kissed my dad goodbye and hurried towards the hospital building. Inside people were moving up and down doing their own thing; I approached the receptionist seated behind a large oak desk making calls and at the same time shifting through files.
ââ¦..and tell Doctor Shepherd Mr. Neely says heâs having some chest pains and he needs some medical advice.â The receptionist spoke to the phone she had pressed against her ear.
I had to wait for several minutes because she was still on the phone. âHi Iâm Reese Dance one of the new interns.â I said after she hanged up.
She first look at her watch then at me, âAnd nowâs the time youâre reporting for work, is that what they taught you at medical school.â She asked in a rude tone.
I could tell I wasnât going to like this woman, âIâm sorry but on our car broke down on our way here and we had to stop for a while.â I lied.
âWhatever.â She rolled her eyes at me and pursed her lips, she turned around and walked towards a shelf stocked with files, I heard her mumbling Reese Dance over and over. After a couple of minutes she came back with a green file that had my name on it and placed them on the oak desk. I leaned over curious to see what the file would contain.
âYou supervisor is Doctor Davies but heâs buried in the quarantine zone at the moment, so for the mean time I will be telling you what to do.â she said the last part with a wide smile.
âok.â I replied; I could see an evil gleam in her eyes; this woman was going to torture me that I was sure of.
âMy name is Hilda by the way.â She said and picked up a black pager which she handed to me. âWhen this pager starts beeping I want you to come running to me do you hear me Reese.â
âI understand Hilda.â I said slowly.
âGood for starters Doctor Davies will need the results of 40 blood samples test when he returns so I need you to go to the lab and make sure they run these all these blood works within the hour.â Hilda instructed.
She piled 40 brown envelopes filled with the blood samples on a tray and shooed me away with it, I was thinking this wasnât so bad until I got to the lab section and saw thousands of brown envelopes sitting there waiting to be tested.
âYouâll have to come for the results tomorrow.â One of the labs guys told me when I asked him to take the envelopes.
âBut Hilda said she needs this in an hour.â I argued.
âIâm sorry but we are already swamped with too much work.â He said.
I sighed what the hell was I going to do now, Iâm sure if I went downstairs and told Hilda they said I should come for the test tomorrow she would kill me.
âIâll handle it.â a familiar voice spoke behind me. I didnât have to turn around to know who it was; it was Brianâ¦â¦.my cheating ex. I had almost forgotten he too was doing his internship here.
âHey Reese.â He smiled at me.
I didnât smile back at the jerk face, I just stared at him with disgust. âWhat do you want?â
âDo you want these done in an hour or not.â He said pointing at the envelopes on the tray. I didnât answer I just sighed and stared at him.
âFine then, give them to me and Iâll take care off it for you.â He said taking the tray away from me.
âThis doesnât make us even.â I warned him and turned away before he could reply. Stupid jerk if he thought helping would make us even he was out of his mind.
Out of nowhere a pair of hands grabbed me from behind and dragged me backwards.
âHey.â I protested loudly and got ready to scream but the unknown person predicted my next move and covered my mouth with his hand continued to drag me backwards. My first thought was it must be Steven only he would dare to do something like this, I started to struggle and thrash about wildly, but whoever that was holding me was away too strong.
âReese please calm down its me.â
My body relaxed immediately, but my heartbeat quickened, I knew that voice I would recognize it anywhere. Happiness radiated through my body. It was Rogue, my Rogue was back.
âAre you going to stop screaming now?â He asked. His hand still covering my mouth.
I nodded and he let go off me, I spun around and there he as handsome as ever, I jumped into his arms and held on to him as if I was drowning. âOh god I missed so much.â I said and stupidly started to cry.
âEr please calm down.â Rogue said, I could sense the uneasiness in his voice.
I stepped away from his embrace wiping the tears from my face; he must think Iâm some crazy emotional girl. âHiâ I said teary eyed.
âIâm sorry for bothering you again but I need your help.â He said with a pained expression. âI need some files and only you can help me get them.â
I frowned what was going on now, âWhat files do you need.â I asked.
He grabbed my shoulder and stared deep into my eyes, âI hear you are Doctor Davies new internâ¦.â He asked and I confirmed it by nodding, âGood I need you to go into his office and make photocopies of filed labeled under the name NVS.â
âRogue I canât do that if I get caught I could end up in jail.â I tried to explain; maybe he didnât understand how things worked here on earth.
âNo you have to help me, I have to know the origin of it and I think the doctor is helping them spread it, he must be working for them Iâm sure.â He insisted shaking me and staring me down with his eyes.
âOk Iâll help you but not until you tell me what is going on, does this have to do with the flu virus that is spreading around town.â I asked but he folded his arms across his chest and silently told me with his eyes that he wasnât going to answer my question.
âIf you do this you are going to help save a lot of lives.â He said softly.
That was enough to convince me, âFine Iâll do it.â I may not know what he was up to but I know it was something good, âIâll be back wait here.â I told him and turned around a bit disappointed, I thought he had come for me, to see me but he hadnât.
I asked a around until I found Doctor Davies office, luckily for me it was open and if any one came and found me in here I would just say I was doctor Davies new intern and I had come looking for him but even that didnât stop my heart from beating like a lost Chihuahua as I went through his private files.
The file was easy to locate but since the doctor didnât have a photocopier in his office I had to walk down the hall away looking for an empty office with a photocopier.
**************
âHere you go.â I said handing the photocopied file to Rogue, he quickly snatched them from my hands and began to flip through them.
âI knew it.â he exclaimed seconds later. âThank you Reese.â He said and started to walk away.
âHey____ Rogue when will I see you again.â I called after him.
âProbably never.â He said.
His words cut across my heart like a knife, unlike me he probably didnât wake up each morning wondering what I was doing or eating, I shook my head I needed to accept that nothing would happen between the two of us and move on.
An hour later I was heading downstairs to hand Hilda the test results when I heard people shouting down the hallway.
Curious, I hurried over to see what was going on, upon arrival I found several nurses and doctor standing over a man who was bleeding profusely.
âWhat the hell.â I muttered how did someone get shot in a hospital? I asked myself stunned
âHe was wearing black jeans, a white T-Shirt with the statue of liberty drawn at the back.â Someone said behind me, my heart jumped into my stomach, the lady was describing the clothes Rogue had been wearing an hour ago. I shifted my attention from the bleeding body, oh lord what had Rogue done.
âWhat else.â An officer who as standing beside the woman who was dressed as a nurse asked.
âHe was over six feet tall; also he had green eyes and moved slowly as if his back hurt.â The nurse continued to say.
âAnd you saw him shoot Doctor Davies.â The officer asked.
âYes he shot him like he was some animal.â The nurse sobbed.
Oh no Rogue what did you do, what did you do. He must be confused, I didnât know Rogue really well but I knew he wouldnât shoot someone for no reason; there must be some sort of explanation. The officer suddenly looked up and stared directly at me; it made me nervous so I turned away from his gaze and disappeared into the crowd of nurses and doctors standing over the corpse.
âDamn it Rogue.â I hissed under my breath, why would he shoot an innocent man did he know the kind of trouble he was in now especially when the nurse could identify him. I was sure by tomorrow a sketch of his face would be all over the six oâclock news.
âWhere the devil have you been?â Hilda hissed at me.
âSomeone one shot doctor Davies.â I told her plainly and waited for her reaction, she mustnât have heard or she wouldnât be sitting behind her desk painting her nails.
âI heard.â She told me absentmindedly and continued painting her toes.
I gasped, âWell arenât you sad.â I asked.
âNoâ¦â¦. I barely knew the manâ¦..by the way someone is looking for you outside.â She added reaching across the table to grab the handful of test results I was holding.
âSomeone is looking for me.â I repeated. âDo you know who?â I asked.
âNo I was just told to tell you someone is looking for you outside.â Hilda replied.
It had to be Rogue; he must be scared of what he had just done and needed my help. âIâll be back.â I told Hilda and spun around heading outside.
I didnât think I would find him standing In the open where everyone could spot him easily, if I were Rogue I would find some secluded spot to hide, problem was there was so many secluded spots like the car pack, the back of the hospital all around me and I didnât know which one he would hiding in and waiting.
Something cold pressed against my back as I was standing there contemplating on what to do, I jumped startled.
âDonât make any sudden moves or Iâll pump your body full of bullets.â Someone hissed into my ear, his voice didnât sound familiar. âSee that van in front of you walk towards it slowly.â He commanded.
âWho are you?â I asked not stepping an inch towards the van.
âShut up and do as I say or Iâll kill you and then kill your family too.â He said again.
âPlease Iâll do what you say just donât do anything rash.â I said and moved towards the van, I didnât know what was waiting for me in there but right now if I wanted to stay alive I had to do what they wanted because they sounded dead serious.
The man shoved me inside the open van roughly; I stumbled and fell hitting my head against the floor.
âHey Reese.â Steven smiled up at me. âSo let me guess that boy you were talking to is Rogue right.â
âNo.â I denied quickly.
âHereâs what weâre going to do, Iâm going to ask you a question and then you will answer, if you say the wrong thing there will be hell to pay and you should keep in mind that daddy isnât here to save you before we start.â Steven said.
My hands went impulsively to cover my throat as I remembered what he had done to me a week ago.
âDo you know where the alien is?â
I looked up into his face frightened, there were three other people in the van but I doubt they would help me.
âReese I asked you a question.â Steven repeated.
âNo I donât know anything so let me go before you get yourself in big trouble.â I said in the bravest voice I could master.
âTell the truth.â he yelled but I refused and folded my arms across my chest determined not to tell him anything, he reached for something behind him from brought it towards me, I didnât see what it was, I didnât even know what it was until it touched my skin and I fell to the ground shaking uncontrollable as an excruciating pain raged down my body
âYou bastard.â I said as I gulped for air, whatever that thing was he had just used it to electrocute me.
âHold her down.â Steven ordered.
âNo please let me go.â I started to yell but someone pressed his hands against my mouth.
âLift her shirt.â Steven ordered.
âWhat are you doing?â I wanted to say, but it came us a muffle since my mouth was still covered. So All I could do was watch in horror as Steven brought out a small knife and began to slice my skin.
âYouâre going to tell me what I want to know or Iâm going to peel off your skin slowly.â He said as I screamed.
To be continuedâ¦â¦â¦.
