Chapter 9 â Canât Run Canât Hide
After we left the shop Rogue insisted that we lay low until we knew exactly the kind of trouble we were in, he strongly believed Steven wouldnât stop looking for me.
âWe need to find a somewhere to safe to stay, we canât be seen wondering around the street. Anyone could recognize us.â Rogue said as we walked out of the shop.
âRecognize usâ¦.you mean recognize you, Iâm not the one who shot doctor Davies and had his face plastered all over the six oâclock news.â I scoffed.
He stopped walking and turned to me, âHave you not been listening to anything Iâve been saying. If you think every law enforcement officer is not looking for you as we speak, you are very mistaken, I saw the look on that manâs face he will never rest until he gets what he wants from you, and I can assure you that right now heâs probably fabricated some lies about you and everyone probably thinks youâre some dangerous murderer.â Rogue yelled at me in a furious tone.
âWhy are you yelling?â
âBecause you need to start taking all this serous, this isnât some movie where all the good guys win ok and I canât always save you, so whatever fairy tale youâve concocted in your brain about our situation you better let it go because we could die.â He spat at me and turned around again.
How dare he yell at me, I fumed, I was the one who saved him from that hole, if I hadnât he would have drowned or bled to death, hell Steven almost killed me twice because I was trying to protect him and he has the audacity to yell at me after Iâve protected and defended him.
âWill you hurry up?â Rogue yelled when he realized I wasnât following him.
I muttered some filthy words at him but luckily he was out of earshot and he didnât hear, he made us take a bus, I didnât know where exactly we were going and I didnât bother to ask because frankly I didnât want to hear the sound of his annoying voice.
That selfish uncaring goat, I had given up everything, my family, school, my reputation just to be with him and protect him and what does he do, treat me like a five year old who is not smart enough to make decisions.
An hour later, we got off the bus and took a taxi; he gave the cab driver an address I didnât recognize. The entire journey to the unknown destination was awkward because neither Rogue nor I spoke to each other, I pretended he didnât exist and he was too busy flipping through some files he had spread on his lap to bother with me. I could have choked to death and he wouldnât have noticed, it made me furious that he was ignoring me, I mean I had a right to be angry because he had yelled at me but what his excuse for not talking to me.
I shifted in my seat uncomfortably repeating to myself over and over again that I didnât care that he was not talking to me but that was a lie because each passing second of silence made me angrier and angrier.
âEr miss you ok.â The cab driver asked staring at me through his review mirror.
âSheâs fine.â Rogue answered in a bored voice.
âShe looks very upset.â The cab driver added.
I scoffed, at least someone noticed, I was about to reply his question when Rogue interrupted.
âWeâre having a loverâs dispute, which we will settle it among ourselves later. In the mean time why donât you concentrate on your driving and stay out of our business and if I catch you staring at my woman again, we are going to have issues.â
His woman? It took every self control I had in me not to grin, of course I knew he was just saying it for show, but those two words alone made all the anger I had boiling in me disappear.
âWeâre here.â The driver announced.
After we climbed out of the car I looked at my surrounding in shock, âRogue you canât be serious.â I said still staring at the motel in shock. Everywhere I looked there were prostitutes who were practically naked roaming up and down the streets calling out to men who were passing by, that wasnât even the worst part, there were under age kids either trying to sell weed or smoking it.
And the motel itself looked like it hadnât been painted into twenty years. âThis is our safe haven.â I asked with disgust.
âNo one would come looking for us here.â He said grabbing my arm and pulling me forward, everywhere smelled either of weed or urine, I covered my nose and mouth so that I wouldnât puke.
âRogue.â I pleaded but he shook his head and dragged me toward the godforsaken motel. The inside of the motel didnât smell as bad as the outside, which was a relief. We approached a rather overweight guy who must weigh about 300 pounds sitting behind the front desk.
âHi we need a room.â Rogue announced.
The beefy overweight man looked at me and winked. âIts 50 bucks for a night.â He said.
âHow much will five days cost?â Rogue asked.
The beefy man once again turned to look at me, this time he seemed more interested in my chest than my face, âAre you guys on you honey moon or something.â
Honeymoon was he serous; did he think anyone would come to this dump to spend their honey moon?
âHow much will that cost?â Rogue asked in an impatient voice.
â350 dollars.â He replied. After Rogue paid him, he gave us a key and pointed us in the direction we should go.
âThis is a bad idea.â I warned Rogue.
âBe quiet.â He hissed at me.
âFine.â A few minutes later we entered into our new room, the walls were painted green but the paint wasnât fading like the outside walls. There was a tiny bed in the middle of the room, which made me wonder how rogue and I were going to fit in seeing as it was so small. We had a red sofa with some of its cushion sticking out and the sheets on the bed had this horrible black stain on it.
âI canât stay here.â I turned to Rogue complain, I wasnât about to sleep on a bed prostitutes had been sharing with their countless lovers.
âLook we have to stay here I need to figure out some other stuff okâ¦Iâll be back.â He said heading for the door.
âWhoaâ¦â I said rushing towards him, âYou canât leave me here all by myself.â I pleaded.
âReese please just do what I tell for once in your life, I need to go and I canât worry about you whiles am out there so stay in this room until I come back.â
âButâ¦..â I started to say but was cut off mid sentence.
âNo buts, stay in this room Iâll be back in four hours.â He said and with that he left.
Five hours later Rogue had still not returned and the room was giving me the creeps, the TV in my room was broken and I couldnât sleep on the bed because of the black stains.
âScrew this.â I grabbed my jacket and walked out of the room, I couldnât stay in that room any longer plus I was hungry. I needed to ask that beefy receptionist if there was anywhere I could get something to eat. I locked our room behind me and walked down the empty hallway, halfway I heard the sounds of two people making love and I rolled my eyes. This motel was like a whore house, and I didnât care what Rogue thought any longer, the minute he returned we would leave this.
From a distance I saw the beefy man talking to several people, a girl and three men, I stopped halfway because those people reminded me of Steven and his men, but it couldnât be them, Rogue had covered our tracks very well so who were they then I wondered.
One of them slipped the beefy man a wad of cash and showed him two papers, from where I stood I couldnât see exactly what it was but I suspected those were mug shots of me and Rogue. The beefy man started to nod after he looked at the paper and then said room 12, I jumped and nearly knocked a flower pot behind me down, that was our room number.
Not sure what to do, I stood there watching them as they started to make their way towards our room. Where the hell was Rogue, we needed to get out of here.
âWhat the hell are you doing here, didnât I tell you not to leave your room.â Rogue cursed suddenly from behind me.
âThey found us.â Was all I could say.
His eyes widened in shock, âThatâs impossible.â
âItâs true I just saw some men and a girl slip that beefy receptionist some money, and they showed him something and then he gave them our room number.â I explained quickly. âRogue weâve got to go.â I told him nervously watching the place they had disappeared off to.
âI donât understand how they found us so quickly.â Rogue complained as we exited the building, I was once again enveloped with the smell of urine and weed.
âIt doesnât matter how they found us, what we need to do is to get out of here.â I replied. âAnd we need a taxi.â I told him scanning the streets for a sign of a car approaching but all I saw was naked whores and teenage boys.
âWe wonât find a cab unless we walk down that street.â He said pointing at another road going on the opposite direction of the motel, I nodded and we began to walk.
After several minutes of silence I said, âCanât you make it rain? I would feel better if we werenât so visible.â I said when we were almost at the end of the road; I could see several cars zooming past us.
âUrgh I forgot, hold on tightly.â He said and started to chant but right there a gun went off. I cringed as the loud noise made my ears sting.
âSon of aâ¦â¦â Rogue swore and then collapsed to the ground, at first I thought he wanted us to law low on the ground but then as he fell I saw all the blood oozing out of his chest and I realized he had been shot.
âRogue.â I yelled as his eyes began to close. âOh please donât die, please donât die.â How would I go through all of this if I didnât have him by my side? Another gun shot came again and missed me by an inch, I ducked and covered my body with Rogueâs while sobbing uncontrollably, we were going to die, and there was nothing I could do about it. Foolishly I lifted my head toward the direction where the gunshots had been coming from to see who was shooting at us, but because it was so dark I only saw shadows moving in the dark.
âReeseâ¦.findâ¦â¦.Davidâ¦â¦.Hannigan.â Rogue mumbled. âLeaveâ¦.now.â he added in a pained voice.
âNo I-I c-cant.â I sobbed.
âDo it.â He hissed at me.
I was about to refuse again, when I heard the sound of a police siren coming towards us, at that moment I it didnât seem odd but when I saw the shadows of the people shooting at us backing off I started to think they might not be the police.
Which raised another question who were they and why were they after us, it just didnât make any sense.
âRogue something is happeningâ¦..â I started to say, but Rogue was no longer conscious, he wasnât even breathing. âRogue come on donât do this wake up.â I yelled.
âOver here.â Someone ordered, seconds later I was blinded with the headlights of what I suspected to be a police car since the sirens sounded much closer now. I heard the sounds of several footsteps running towards us.
âAre you ok?â someone asked.
âThis one is shot.â Another person said.
I still couldnât see anything because of the blinding light, âPlease help him heâs not breathing.â I pleaded.
âHoly shit.â Someone swore.
âWhat.â Another person asked.
âIsnât that the girl who escaped the custody of the FBI?â The person who had sworn asked.
Oh no, my heart began to race again in anxiety, I was about to protest when someone else spoke.
âYeah and thatâs her accomplice, the one that murdered eighteen people.â
What eighteen people? âThatâs a lie.â I shouted.
âSomeone better call Mr. Steven Cruz, in the mean time young lady youâre under arrest.â Cold hands grabbed and lifted me up away from Rogue, and I was no longer blinded, I could see three police squad cars and several officers moving to and fro.
Oh God Rogue wake up. If they took me to jail and Steven found us, first he would kill me and then they would take rogue to their lab and experiment on him.
âThis is some kind of mistake.â
âSave it you murdering bitch.â The police officer hissed at me and handcuffed me; he then shoved me into the back of his car. From there I watched helplessly as they put Rogue into an ambulance, which sped off. I couldnât help but cry, they were taking him away and there was nothing I could do, I probably wouldnât see him again.
âWe called Mr. Cruz, he says heâs looking forward to see you again.â the police officer announced.
I am so screwed, how was I going to get out of this one without Rogueâs help?
To be continuedâ¦â¦â¦â¦â¦..
