Jake and Alex stood in the doorway, their eyes scanning the transformed room in amazement. The space had undergone a complete overhaulâwhat was once Jakeâs childhood bedroom had now become a room for two. The beds were set up side by side, each with matching yet distinct bedding that suited their individual styles. A sleek new TV was mounted on the wall, and Alexâs gaming console was hooked up beneath it, ready for action. Posters featuring their favorite games and movies decorated the walls, blending their personalities into a single, shared space.
Mrs. Faulkner stepped into the room behind them and smiled. "Well? What do you boys think?"
Alex ran a hand over his bed, still taking it all in. "This⦠this is amazing," he said, his voice full of gratitude. "I didnât expect all this."
Jake nodded, his fingers brushing over his old desk, which now had room for both of them to study and play. "Yeah⦠itâs different, but itâs really cool."
Inside, Jake felt a mix of emotions. His old roomâthe one he had known all his lifeâwas gone. It was a strange feeling, like letting go of a piece of his past. But as he looked at Alex, who was now beaming with excitement, he realized something. This wasnât just his room anymore. This was their room. And that wasnât a bad thing at all.
Mrs. Faulkner walked over and ruffled both their hair playfully. "I wanted to make sure you both felt at home. Youâre brothers now, and this is your space."
Alex glanced at Jake, still a little unsure. "Are you really okay with this? I mean⦠it was your room first."
Jake smiled and shrugged. "Yeah. It was, but now itâs ours. And thatâs pretty cool."
Mrs. Faulkner clapped her hands together. "Good! Now, go wash up for dinner. I was thinking of ordering in so I donât have to cook, and we can all do a TV show marathon. You boys in the mood for tacos?"
Jake and Alex grinned at each other before answering in unison, "Definitely!"
Mrs. Faulkner pulled out her phone, opening the Taco Bell app. "Alright, tell me what you boys want."
Jake quickly scrolled through the menu. "Iâll take a beef burrito and a cheesy gordita crunch. Oh, and some cinnamon twists!"
Alex pondered for a moment before deciding. "I want a crunchwrap supreme and nacho fries. Oh! And a Baja Blast!"
Mrs. Faulkner chuckled. "Alright, two growing boys and their endless appetites. Got it."
An hour later, the food arrived. The smell of warm tacos and melted cheese filled the living room as they all sat on the couch, unwrapping their meals. Mrs. Faulkner grabbed the remote and turned to the boys. "Okay, what are we binging tonight?"
Jake leaned back, taking a bite of his burrito. "How about Brooklyn Nine-Nine?"
Alex grinned. "Or The Office?"
Mrs. Faulkner laughed. "Well, since weâre family now, letâs pick something we all love."
As the screen lit up and the first episode began to play, Alex looked around, taking in the warmth of the moment. He had lost his old house, but he had gained something newâa home, a family, and a brother. And as they laughed and enjoyed their food together, he realized that maybe, just maybe, this was exactly where he was meant to be.
