The warm morning light filtered through the blinds as Jake and Alex finished getting changed. Despite the embarrassing events of the night before, they couldn't help but laugh about it. After all, brothers went through everything togetherâwins, losses, and even Taco Bell mishaps.
Mrs. Faulkner had already started making breakfast when the boys came downstairs, the smell of bacon and eggs filling the air. She turned and smiled at them. "Feeling better this morning, boys?"
Jake stretched and yawned. "Yeah, but I think I'm laying off fast food for a while."
Alex chuckled. "Same here. I donât think I can look at a taco the same way again."
Mrs. Faulkner set plates in front of them and ruffled their hair. "Well, lesson learned. Now eat upâweâve got a busy day ahead."
"Busy with what?" Jake asked between bites.
"Well, since you two are officially settled in, I thought we could go shopping for some things to personalize your room. New posters, decorations, maybe even a gaming chair or two?"
Alexâs eyes lit up. "Really? That sounds awesome!"
Jake grinned. "Yeah, letâs do it!"
After breakfast, the boys quickly got dressed and hopped into the car. As they pulled out of the driveway, Alex glanced over at Jake and smiled. "Y'know, even with everything that happened last night⦠I think this was the best first night as brothers I couldâve asked for."
Jake smirked. "Yeah, me too. Just⦠letâs try to keep our meals a little safer next time."
They both laughed as their mom drove them toward the mall, ready to start their first full day as real brothersâtogether.
At the mall, the boys walked in with their mom and looked at the directory to see where they needed to go. Their eyes scanned over the list of stores, each looking for something that caught their interest. "Alright, where to first?" Mrs. Faulkner asked.
"Game store!" Jake and Alex said at the same time, then laughed.
"Alright, alright, letâs go check it out first, but we are also looking for home stuff too, got it?" she said with a smirk.
The boys nodded eagerly as they headed toward their first stop of the day.
As they entered the game store, they were immediately drawn to the vibrant posters of new games and popular YouTubers lining the walls. One sign in particular caught their attention: "Try the Gaming Chair of the Future!" The ad boasted features like a reclining function, massage mode, surround sound, and more. The price tag? A hefty $1,500.
"Whoaâ¦" Alex said in awe. "That thing looks insane."
Jake ran his fingers over the sleek armrests of the display model. "Imagine playing games in this! We'd never leave our room."
Mrs. Faulkner chuckled. "Letâs focus on things we actually need first, boys. But⦠maybe we can consider something like this for a special occasion."
Just as they moved toward the game shelves, they noticed a familiar face behind the counterâJordan, one of their friends, wearing the storeâs uniform. He grinned as he spotted them. "Well, well, look who it is! You guys here to take all my recommendations?"
Jake smirked. "Only if theyâre good ones."
Jordan laughed. "Iâve got you covered. What are you guys looking for today?"
Alex and Jake exchanged glances before diving into their list of must-have games. After picking out a few games and posters, they approached the counter, where Jordan rang up their purchases.
"You guys are lucky," Jordan said with a grin. "Iâll hook you up with my employee discount."
"Seriously?" Alex asked, eyes widening.
"Yep, just donât tell my boss," Jordan joked, winking.
Mrs. Faulkner smiled. "Thatâs very nice of you, Jordan. Boys, what do you say?"
"Thanks, Jordan!" they said in unison.
As they left the game store, Mrs. Faulkner steered them toward the next stopâa furniture store. "Alright, boys, before we leave, we need to get a few essentials. I want you two to pick out a new rug and desk chairs for your room."
Jake and Alex exchanged a glance before nodding. "Alright, letâs do it."
They wandered through the store, scanning the rows of rugs and chairs until they found the perfect ones. A Minecraft cake-themed rug caught Alexâs eye, while Jake was drawn to a sleek, modern red leather desk chair with wheels. Alex chose a matching blue one, and they excitedly rolled them around the showroom floor, testing their comfort.
After checking out, they carried their new purchases back to the car, feeling accomplished. But just as they were about to leave, something else caught their attentionâa VR experience station with a glowing sign that read: "Step into Virtual Reality! Play for 30 minutes or an hour!"
"Whoa! Mom, can we check this out?" Jake asked, nudging Alex excitedly.
Mrs. Faulkner smiled at their enthusiasm. "Alright, letâs see how much it costs first. But letâs get this stuff to the car first, okay?"
With eager nods, the boys loaded their purchases into the trunk, barely able to contain their excitement for their next adventure.
They practically sprinted back into the mall, only slowing down when their mom reminded them to take it easy. As they approached the VR store, they saw a man with glasses typing away at a computer behind the counter.
He looked up as they entered, adjusting his glasses with a polite smile. "Hi, Iâm Bradley. Welcome to Virtual Experience! How can I help you?"
Jake stepped forward eagerly. "How much does it cost to play?"
Bradley pointed to a sign listing the pricing options. "We have two choices: 30 minutes for $15 or an hour for $25. We also offer group discounts if you both want to play at the same time."
Alex looked up at their mom. "Can we do it? Please?"
Mrs. Faulkner chuckled. "Alright, but just 30 minutes. You guys still have other stores to check out."
The boys high-fived each other in excitement before Bradley led them to their VR stations. As they put on their headsets, they were transported into a whole new worldâready for another adventure.
Bradley said, "Alright, boys, what do you want to play?"
Both answered in unison, "Beat Saber!"
Bradley typed into his computer, and the VR headsets booted up Beat Saber. "Solo mode or vs. mode?" he asked.
"Vs. mode!" Alex said excitedly. "You're going down, Jake!"
Jake grinned. "Yeah, right."
Bradley chuckled and set up their game. "Alright, boys, have fun!"
30 minutes passed, the boys playing about 6 songs. Their scores appeared on screen:
Jake: Good cuts: 1543/1865, Best combo: 123, Score: 765,981 (Rank A)
Alex: Good cuts: 1800/1865, Best combo: 123, Score: 842,615 (Rank S)
Jake groaned. "No way! You beat me again?!"
Alex smirked. "Better luck next time, bro."
Today was turning out to be the best day yet.
