Two hours later, the house is finally settling into a rare sense of calm. Miss Harper, the boys, and Mrs. Faulkner are all huddled together on the couch, a blanket draped over them for comfort, the weight of the day still heavy in the air. The television is on, a soft buzz of static and news programs filling the silence. They haven’t spoken much since the chaos of earlier; the shock of it all still feels fresh.Alex leans against Miss Harper, his eyes closed, still exhausted but not daring to sleep. Jake, sitting next to him, is tapping his fingers nervously on the armrest. Mrs. Faulkner, her face pale but resolute, sits with her hands folded in her lap, her mind clearly still processing everything that has happened.

Then, just as the quiet settles, the screen flashes to a breaking news headline, interrupting whatever program had been playing.

“BREAKING: Robert ‘Bobby’ Lyle Dead. Massive Trafficking Ring Associated with Mob Busted. Several Known Mobsters Apprehended. Officer Hernandez Captured.”

The words hang in the air, the gravity of them sinking in as the family watches in silence. The camera zooms in on a picture of Lyle, his once-confident smirk now replaced by the cold image of a criminal who has been taken down. The list of names scrolls beneath him—mobsters who were complicit in the trafficking ring, their faces now on the public record. Among them, one name stands out: Officer Hernandez.

The anchor’s voice continues, a hint of astonishment in their tone. “In a stunning turn of events, the notorious Robert Lyle, leader of a vast trafficking operation spanning several states, was found dead tonight after a confrontation with law enforcement. A shocking twist—Officer Hernandez, a trusted member of the department, was implicated in the operation. The investigation that led to this bust was spearheaded by Detective Charles Singer, who joins us now live from the scene.”

The camera cuts to a live broadcast, and there, standing tall with a look of quiet resolve, is Detective Singer. His uniform is still crisp, but there’s a weight in his eyes, a fatigue that can’t be hidden even through the professionalism of his demeanor.

"Detective Singer," the anchor begins, "You’ve been at the center of this investigation for weeks now, but tonight, you’ve finally brought down Lyle. Can you tell us more about how this all came to a head?"

Singer takes a breath, his expression focused but calm. "Well, it’s been a long road. We knew the scale of what we were up against, but we had no idea how deep it ran until recently. The connections were buried, but with each step, we started unraveling it. Officer Hernandez, well… it turns out he was the one with the inside knowledge. He was feeding Lyle information, putting this entire department in jeopardy. But in the end, we did what we needed to do. We stopped him, we stopped Lyle, and we saved lives."

The camera zooms in slightly as Singer’s gaze hardens, his voice steady with the finality of what’s been done. "It’s not just about closing cases. It’s about ensuring people like Lyle don’t get another chance to destroy lives. The streets are safer tonight, and that’s what matters."

Miss Harper, sitting on the couch with her family, watches the interview. The relief that had been slowly settling in is now overshadowed by the finality of the statement. Lyle is gone. Hernandez is in custody. They are free.

Jake looks at the TV, his eyes filled with awe and a sense of finality. "It’s really over," he says quietly.

Miss Harper nods, her hand resting on his shoulder. "For now, yeah. We’ve made it out. They’ve made sure of that."

Mrs. Faulkner, who has been silent, leans forward slightly, her eyes still locked on the screen. "Thank God for Detective Singer."

The boys both nod in agreement, their faces still marked by the fear and relief of what they’ve been through. They’ve made it through the darkness—thanks to the detective, thanks to Miss Harper—and now, maybe, they can finally start rebuilding.

The news broadcast continues, the camera panning back to Detective Singer, who has stepped away from the mic to speak with other officers at the scene. The weight of the case seems to have lifted from his shoulders, but Miss Harper knows that the toll it took on him will linger. The danger is over, but the scars left behind by everything they went through are not easily erased.

As the news segment fades to black, the house falls into an unusual stillness. They are safe now, and for the first time in what feels like forever, they can take a breath. They can heal.

But even as Miss Harper looks at the boys, the overwhelming thought crosses her mind: There will always be more battles, more enemies lurking in the shadows. But for tonight, they’ve won.

And that’s enough for now.
