The soft glow of the morning sun filtered through the kitchen window, casting a warm light across the room. Mrs. Faulkner sat at the table, sipping her coffee as she gazed out the window, lost in thought. Miss Harper was beside her, her cup resting in her hands, taking in the calm of the morning. The boys had slept soundly through the night, a rarity lately, and it was a small sign of progress that they were finally starting to rest a little easier.

Just as Miss Harper was about to take another sip, her phone rang, breaking the quiet atmosphere. She looked down at the screen and saw the name of the therapist’s office flashing on the display.

Mrs. Faulkner noticed the sudden shift in Miss Harper’s expression and gave her a small, encouraging smile. “Is it them?”

Miss Harper nodded and quickly swiped to answer. “Hello?” she said, her voice steady but carrying the slight edge of anticipation.

“Hi, this is Dr. Jenkins’ office. Is this Miss Harper?”

“Yes, it is,” Miss Harper replied. “How can I help you?”

“We have an opening for Alex and Jake to come in for their first therapy session tomorrow at 10 a.m. Would that work for you?”

Miss Harper's heart gave a small leap of relief. Therapy was the next step, the one she had been hoping for, the one that would hopefully give Alex and Jake the support they needed to heal from everything they’d been through.

“That sounds perfect,” Miss Harper said with a small smile, glancing over at Mrs. Faulkner. “We’ll be there.”

“Great,” the receptionist said cheerfully. “We’ll see you tomorrow at 10. Thank you, and we look forward to meeting you all.”

Miss Harper hung up the phone and let out a quiet breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. She turned to Mrs. Faulkner, her face softening with a sense of relief.

“It’s done. Tomorrow, they start therapy,” she said, her voice filled with both hope and exhaustion.

Mrs. Faulkner nodded, her eyes kind. “It’s a big step. I know they’re going to be okay, Miss Harper. You’ve done so much for them already.”

Miss Harper looked down at her coffee cup, her thoughts drifting to the boys upstairs. It had been a difficult few weeks, but every day, they seemed to take small steps forward. She couldn’t help but feel proud of them.

“Thank you,” Miss Harper replied softly. “But I think the real credit goes to Alex and Jake. They’ve been so strong, even when they didn’t know how to be. I just want them to feel better.”

“I know you do,” Mrs. Faulkner said warmly. “And they’re lucky to have you.”

The sound of soft footsteps coming down the stairs interrupted their conversation. Miss Harper looked up, a smile tugging at her lips as Alex and Jake appeared in the doorway, both rubbing their eyes and looking a little sleepy but still managing small smiles when they saw Miss Harper.

“Good morning, sweethearts,” Miss Harper said, her voice gentle. “Did you sleep okay?”

Alex nodded sleepily. “Yeah, I think so.”

Jake gave her a shy grin. “Me too.”

“Well, I have some good news,” Miss Harper said, her tone brightening. “You guys are going to start therapy tomorrow. You’ll get to talk to someone who can help, okay?”

Alex looked up at her, his expression a mix of uncertainty and curiosity. “Will it… help us feel better?”

Miss Harper knelt down to their level, her hands resting on their shoulders. “It’s a big step, sweetie. It might not be easy at first, but I believe it will help. You’ll have someone to talk to, someone who understands.”

Jake looked over at his brother, then back at Miss Harper. “We’ll go together?”

“Of course,” Miss Harper said, giving him a reassuring smile. “We’ll go together. You’re not alone in this.”

The boys nodded, both seeming comforted by the promise. Miss Harper reached out and gently brushed a hand through Alex's hair, then did the same for Jake, both small gestures of affection that meant so much.

“We’re going to take it one day at a time,” Miss Harper continued. “And we’ll get through it together, okay?”

Alex and Jake both nodded, the weight of everything that had happened still lingering in their eyes, but a small flicker of hope shining through as well.

As they all sat down to breakfast, there was a sense of calm in the house. The road ahead was still uncertain, and the boys still had a long way to go, but for the first time in a while, Miss Harper felt like they were on the right path.

Tomorrow was a new beginning, and with it, a new chance for healing.

Miss Harper’s eyes softened as she looked at Alex and Jake, still sleepy but now alert as they sat at the kitchen table. She could smell the familiar scent of their diapers, a reminder that even though they were making progress in other ways, there were still moments where they struggled.

She had promised herself that she would help them through each step, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. Today, it was about making sure they felt safe and comfortable, even if that meant taking care of them like they were still so little.

"Okay, boys," Miss Harper said gently, her tone filled with patience and love. "It’s time for a fresh start today. Let's get you both changed and ready for breakfast."

She took Alex’s hand first and guided him upstairs to the changing table. As she carefully changed his diaper, she spoke softly to him, her voice a calming presence. “You’re doing so well, sweetie. I’m really proud of you.” Alex smiled shyly, his eyes meeting hers for just a moment before he turned his attention back to the stuffed dragon he had clutched the night before.

Once Alex was in a fresh diaper, Miss Harper picked out a new onesie for him—green, with the words “Mommy’s Little Stinker” across the chest. She chuckled softly as she dressed him, her fingers brushing over the soft fabric. It was a playful, loving reminder of how she viewed him—no matter what, he was her little boy.

Next, she turned to Jake, who was waiting patiently, his small hands gripping his stuffed animal. She gently lifted him onto the changing table and got to work. He looked up at her, his face tired but trusting. “You ready, sweetie?”

Jake nodded, his lips curving into a small, sleepy smile as Miss Harper worked to change him as well. She made sure he was comfortable before she slipped him into a new onesie—this one blue and purple striped, a simple design, but one that made him look so adorable. Once Jake was all set, she attached a matching bib to him as well, ensuring he was ready for breakfast.

With both boys now clean, fresh, and dressed in their new onesies, Miss Harper carried them back downstairs, where the scent of baby food and milk filled the kitchen. She set them at the table, both boys sitting comfortably as they looked at the bowls of mashed peaches and apples in front of them, their bottles of milk within reach.

“Okay, boys, time for breakfast,” Miss Harper said softly, as she began to feed them. She picked up a spoonful of baby food, gently guiding it to Alex’s mouth first. He opened up obediently, eyes focused on her with a mixture of trust and curiosity.

“You’re doing great,” Miss Harper praised him as she fed him a few more bites. Once Alex had finished his portion, she moved on to Jake, who was already eagerly awaiting his turn. Miss Harper spoon-fed him with the same care, her voice steady and soothing as she worked through their meal.

It was a quiet, comforting moment—a routine that made them feel safe and loved, even as they grappled with everything they had been through. She watched them both, one bite at a time, doing her best to ensure they felt cared for in ways she knew they needed.

When the bowls were empty and the bottles drained, Miss Harper wiped their faces gently with a soft cloth, her hands moving with practiced ease. She then helped them both settle back into their seats, smiling softly at the way they now seemed more relaxed and content.

“Thank you, Miss Harper,” Alex said quietly, his voice small but sincere. “For everything.”

Miss Harper smiled, her heart swelling with affection. “You’re very welcome, Alex. I’m always here for you.”

Jake looked up at her with wide, trusting eyes. “You’re the best, Miss Harper.”

“I’m happy to be here for you both,” she replied, her voice warm and full of love.
