Chapter 99: a week at sunny smiles

The next morning, Mrs. Faulkner gathered the boys in the living room, making sure they were all ready for their first day at ** Sunny Smiles**. Evan was already dressed and waiting by the door, used to the routine, while the others were still adjusting to the idea.

"Alright, boys," she said, looking at each of them. "You’ll be spending the next few days at the daycare while Miss Harper is out of town. I expect you all to be on your best behavior. That means following the rules, listening to the staff, and treating everyone with respect. Understood?"

Jake and Alex nodded quickly. Jordan shrugged. "I mean, sure, but it’s a daycare. What’s there to mess up?"

Evan chuckled. "You’d be surprised."

Tyler, still groggy from sleep, rubbed his eyes. "Do I *have* to go? Can’t I just stay home?"

Mrs. Faulkner gave him a pointed look. "You need structure, Tyler. Besides, it’ll be good for you."

Reluctantly, Tyler sighed and got up from the couch.

A short drive later, they arrived at Sunny Smiles**. The building was bright and welcoming, decorated with cheerful murals and posters reminding everyone of the rules and daily activities. Miss Rachel was waiting at the front desk, clipboard in hand.

"Good morning, boys!" she greeted with a warm smile. "Welcome to Sunny Smiles. I know it’s a bit of a change for some of you, but I promise we’ll make it a good experience."

The boys murmured greetings, some more enthusiastic than others.

Miss Rachel glanced at her clipboard. "Now, since this is your first day, we’ll go over the basics. You’ll have scheduled activities, downtime, and meals. Some of our boys here have certain needs, so be mindful of that. And, of course, the biggest rule—respect. No teasing, no roughhousing, and no attitude."

She gave a pointed look toward Evan and Tyler, sensing where the trouble might come from.

Evan smirked. "Don’t worry, Miss Rachel. I’ll be a *perfect* angel."

Tyler rolled his eyes but stayed quiet.

"Good," Miss Rachel said, unconvinced but moving on. "Now, let’s get you all settled in. Your group leader for the next few days will be Mr. Lucas. He’ll be in charge of your schedule and making sure you’re comfortable."

As they followed Miss Rachel inside, Tyler lagged behind, looking at the other teens already there. Some were playing quietly, while others were engaged in group activities. A few boys were clearly more dependent on the daycare’s structure, something Tyler wasn’t sure how to feel about.

Jordan nudged him. "Relax, man. It’s just a few days."

Tyler sighed. "Yeah… I just hope I don’t slip again."

Miss Rachel, overhearing, placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. "You’ll be fine, Tyler. Just take it one step at a time."

As the boys were introduced to their new routine, the day ahead promised new experiences—some expected, some not. But one thing was certain: their time at **Sunny Smiles** would be anything but boring.

As the boys stood near the entrance, taking in their new surroundings, Evan turned to face them with a smug grin.

"Alright, listen up," he said, crossing his arms. "Since I’ve been coming here the longest, let me give you the rundown before you embarrass yourselves."

Jake raised an eyebrow. "Oh, this should be good."

Evan ignored the sarcasm and started listing the rules on his fingers.

"Rule one: Stick to the schedule. There’s playtime, meals, quiet time, and group activities. Miss Rachel *hates* when people mess with the schedule."

"Rule two: No fighting, no teasing, and *especially* no making fun of anyone. Some of the kids here need more help than others, and the staff *will* come down on you hard if you act like a jerk."

Tyler, already looking a little uneasy, just nodded.

"Rule three: If you need help with anything, ask. There are a lot of staff members around, and they’re not bad—just *strict* about rules."

"Rule four: The bathroom situation is important." Evan’s smirk grew wider as he leaned in. "Some kids here don’t always make it, so if you don’t want to get stuck in the ‘extra care’ section, make sure you let someone know if you gotta go."

That got everyone’s attention. Jordan’s eyes narrowed. "Wait… what exactly do you mean by ‘extra care’?"

Evan shrugged. "Let’s just say some kids here have *special accommodations* and leave it at that."

Alex and Jake exchanged glances while Tyler looked a little pale.

"And finally, rule five," Evan continued, "don’t mess with Mr. Lucas. He’s in charge of our group, and he doesn’t put up with nonsense. You cross the line, and you’ll be scrubbing tables or stuck in time-out faster than you can blink."

Having said his piece, Evan dusted off his hands. "Alright, that’s it. You’ve been warned. Now, I’m off to find Noah."

Before anyone could respond, Evan jogged off down the hallway, leaving the rest of them to process everything he had just said.

"Well," Jake muttered, "this place just got a whole lot more interesting."

Tyler groaned. "I already hate it here."

Jordan clapped him on the shoulder. "Cheer up, Ty-Ty. At least you know the rules now."

Miss Rachel approached, motioning for them to follow. "Alright, boys, let’s get you settled. Your day is just getting started."

With hesitant steps, the Faulkner boys walked forward, unsure of what the next few days would bring.

Miss Rachel gave Tyler a firm yet gentle look. "It was nice of Evan to give you boys a few of the rules, but there are a few more I need to make clear—no fighting, no hitting, no swearing, no biting, no bullying, and no using mean words such as 'hate.'"

She sighed, then turned to Tyler directly. "Which means, Tyler, I'm afraid that’s 15 minutes in time-out for your first offense."

Tyler’s jaw dropped. "Wait, what? I didn’t—" He stopped mid-sentence as Miss Rachel simply raised an eyebrow. He groaned, slumping his shoulders. "Fine…"

Jake and Alex exchanged glances, both wisely staying silent. Jordan, on the other hand, smirked. "Tough break, Ty-Ty."

Tyler shot him a glare before following Miss Rachel to the designated time-out area. As he sat down, arms crossed, he muttered under his breath.

Meanwhile, Evan had already disappeared around the corner in search of Noah, leaving the rest of the boys to navigate their first day at Sunny Smiles on their own.

Miss Rachel clapped her hands together. "Alright, boys, let’s get you all settled. We have a busy day ahead, and I expect you all to follow the rules."

With that, the adventure at the daycare officially began.

Miss Rachel guided Jake, Alex, and Jordan down the hall to Mr. Lucas’s room, where several other boys their age were already engaged in activities. Mr. Lucas, a tall man with a friendly smile, greeted them warmly.

“Welcome, boys! I'm glad to have you here at Sunny Smiles. We’ve got a few things planned for today, but first, feel free to look around and get comfortable.”

As the three settled in, Miss Rachel turned back toward the time-out area where Tyler sat, still looking irritated. She approached with a calm yet firm expression.

“Tyler,” she said gently, pulling up a chair beside him, “I know you’re not happy about this, but I need you to understand why you’re here.”

Tyler sighed, still avoiding eye contact. “I just said a word. It’s not like I hit anyone or broke something.”

Miss Rachel nodded. “I get it. But words matter, especially here. This daycare is meant to be a safe, encouraging place. The rules aren’t about punishing you—they’re about making sure everyone treats each other with kindness and respect.”

Tyler fidgeted with his fingers, thinking for a moment before mumbling, “I guess I wasn’t trying to be mean, but I didn’t think before I spoke.”

Miss Rachel smiled. “Exactly. And that’s what time-out is for—not just to sit and do nothing, but to take a moment to think about how our words and actions affect others.”

Tyler let out a small sigh but nodded. “Alright. I get it.”

Miss Rachel patted his shoulder. “Good. Your time is almost up, and then you can go join the others. Just remember—be mindful of the words you use, okay?”

“Okay,” Tyler said, finally looking up at her.

Miss Rachel smiled before standing up. “Alright, I’ll come get you in a few minutes. Then you can head to Mr. Lucas’s room and enjoy the rest of the day.”

With that, she walked away, leaving Tyler to reflect as he waited for his time to be up.

Miss Rachel paused before leaving, giving Tyler a serious yet understanding look. “I do hope timeout is the worst you ever have to deal with here,” she said. “We have two boys who fight every day, and when they don’t listen, Miss Amber has to step in. She spanks both of them before putting them in timeout.”

Tyler’s eyes widened slightly. “Wait…" seriously?”

Miss Rachel nodded. “Yes. We don’t tolerate fighting here, and repeated bad behavior has consequences. But I’d rather not see you end up in that situation, so let’s make sure we follow the rules, okay?”

Tyler quickly nodded. “Yeah… I’ll be good.”

Miss Rachel smiled. “That’s what I like to hear. I’ll come back in a few minutes, and then you can join the others.”

With that, she walked away, leaving Tyler to think about what she had just said. He wasn’t planning on breaking any more rules—timeout was bad enough, but he definitely wasn’t interested in finding out what Miss Amber was like when she was upset.

After 15 minutes, Miss Rachel returned to where Tyler was sitting in timeout. She gave him a kind but firm look.

“Alright, Tyler, your timeout is over. I hope you’ve had some time to think about the rules here,” she said.

Tyler nodded quickly. “Yeah, I got it. No mean words, no fighting, no breaking rules.”

Miss Rachel smiled. “Good. Now, you can go join the others in Mr. Lucas’s room. Let’s have a good rest of the day, okay?”

Tyler stood up and stretched. “Okay.”

As he walked toward the classroom, he made a mental note to keep his head down and follow the rules. He wasn’t about to end up in bigger trouble—especially after hearing about Miss Amber.

Tyler walked into Mr. Lucas’s room, scanning for his friends. The room was set up like a mix between a classroom and a play area, with bean bags, desks, and shelves full of games and books. Evan was already chatting with Noah near a set of building blocks, while Jake and Alex were looking at a board game on a nearby table.

Mr. Lucas, a tall man with a friendly smile, greeted Tyler as he walked in. “Glad to have you join us, Tyler. I trust Miss Rachel explained everything to you?”

Tyler nodded. “Yeah, I got the rules.”

“Good. Then go ahead and find something to do,” Mr. Lucas said before turning his attention to another boy who needed help with an activity.

Tyler walked over to Jake and Alex. “What are you guys playing?”

Jake grinned. “Some kind of strategy game. You in?”

Tyler sat down. “Yeah, sure. As long as it doesn’t come with another timeout.”

Alex smirked. “Then you better play nice.”

The group chuckled, settling in for a game, while Evan and Noah continued their own fun. For now, things seemed peaceful—though Tyler had a feeling the day at Sunny Smiles would be anything but boring.

Tyler, Jake, and Alex were deep into their game when another boy approached them. He had dark hair, a mischievous grin, and a slight swagger to his step. “Hey, new guys,” he said, crossing his arms. “You better not be taking my spot at this table.”

Jake looked up, unfazed. “Didn’t see your name on it.”

The boy smirked. “Name’s Liam. And I don’t need to put my name on things. Everyone just knows.”

Tyler, still on edge from his timeout, sighed. “We’re just playing a game, man. There is no need to start something.”

Liam chuckled. “Relax, I’m just messing with you. But seriously, if you guys need any tips on surviving this place, I’m your guy.”

Alex glanced at Jake, then back at Liam. “Thanks, but Evan already gave us the rundown.”

Liam shrugged. “Suit yourselves. But if you ever need backup, I got your back.” He winked before walking off, leaving the boys slightly bewildered.

“That was… odd,” Jake muttered.

“Yeah, but at least he wasn’t looking for a fight,” Tyler added, shaking his head.

As things settled down, Mr. Lucas clapped his hands together. “Alright, boys! We’re going to have some group activities soon, so finish up what you’re doing.”

The boys exchanged glances, knowing the real experience at Sunny Smiles was only just beginning.

Before anyone could respond, Mr. Lucas clapped his hands. “Alright, boys! Time for group activities. Everyone to the mat area.”

The boys got up, following the others toward the designated spot. Tyler sighed, glancing at Evan. “Let’s just hope today goes by fast.”

Evan smirked. “Welcome to Sunny Smiles.”

Mr. Lucas looked directly at Tyler, who was dragging his feet toward the mat area. “Tyler, is there something you’d like to say? You seem like you don’t want to be here.”

Tyler sighed and crossed his arms. “I mean… do I have to be? I’m fifteen. This place is for kids who still need… y’know, extra help.”

Mr. Lucas raised an eyebrow. “That may be true for some, but the rules here apply to everyone. You’re here, so you’re expected to participate and follow the same guidelines as the rest of the boys.”

Tyler shifted uncomfortably. “Yeah, yeah, I get it.”

Mr. Lucas nodded. “Good. Now, let’s get started.”

As the group settled in, Evan leaned over to Tyler and whispered, “Dude, just go with it. It’s easier that way.”

Tyler exhaled sharply. “Fine. But I’m counting down the minutes till we’re out of here.”

Mr Lucas says ok kids our first group activity is meet and greet you'll come up introduce yourselves and say one thing about you that interesting, I'll start my name is Mr Lucas and I used to have a TV show.

The boys all looked at Mr. Lucas with a mix of surprise and curiosity.

"You were on TV?" Evan asked, raising an eyebrow.

Mr. Lucas chuckled. "Yep, back in the day. But that's a story for another time. Now, who's up first?"

Noah was quick to step forward. "I'll go! My name is Noah, and I’ve been coming here longer than Evan. Oh, and my uncle is a police captain!" He grinned proudly.

Evan rolled his eyes but smirked. "Alright, my turn. I'm Evan, I already go here, and I know all the rules... including the ones about Miss Amber." He gave a pointed look to Tyler.

Tyler crossed his arms. "I'm Tyler, and apparently, I'm the troublemaker today." He sighed. "Oh, and I play soccer."

Jordan stood up next. "I'm Jordan, and I just got my cast off, so if I look slow, that’s why."

Jake and Alex introduced themselves together, each saying we are best friends turned brothers and liked playing video games.

Mr. Lucas nodded approvingly. "Great introductions, everyone. Now that we know a little more about each other, let's move on to our next activity."

Mr. Lucas clapped his hands together. “Alright, now that we’ve met each other, let’s move on to our next activity—team challenges.”

The boys exchanged glances. Jordan leaned over to Tyler and whispered, “Please tell me this isn’t going to be some weird trust fall exercise.”

Mr. Lucas smiled. “Don’t worry, nothing too intense. We’re going to play a game of teamwork and problem-solving.”

He led the group to a large mat in the middle of the room. “Alright, the challenge is simple. You and your partner will have to navigate an obstacle course while holding onto a single rope together. If you let go, you start over. It’s all about communication and patience.”

Noah immediately grabbed Evan’s arm. “We’re a team.”

Evan smirked. “Obviously.”

Jordan turned to Tyler. “Guess we’re stuck together.”

Tyler shrugged. “Fine, but if I fall, you better catch me.”

Jake and Alex naturally paired up, leaving the rest of the kids to form their own teams.

Mr. Lucas blew his whistle. “First team up, Noah and Evan.”

The two stepped onto the mat, gripping their rope. The course had small hurdles, cones, and even a section where they had to balance on a narrow beam.

“Alright,” Evan said, stepping forward first. “Stay close and match my pace.”

Noah nodded, but halfway through, he nearly tripped over a cone. Evan caught him by the arm. “Dude, focus.”

Noah grinned. “I got this.”

With a few stumbles, they made it to the finish line.

“Good teamwork,” Mr. Lucas praised. “Next up, Jordan and Tyler.”

Jordan adjusted his grip on the rope. “Alright, just stay steady.”

Tyler rolled his eyes. “Yeah, yeah.”

They started well, but when they got to the narrow beam, Tyler hesitated. “Dude, my balance isn’t great.”

Jordan sighed. “Just walk at the same pace as me.”

Tyler took a shaky step, and for a moment, it looked like they had it—until Jordan’s foot slipped slightly. Tyler panicked and let go of the rope.

Mr. Lucas blew his whistle. “Start over.”

Tyler groaned. “Seriously?”

Jordan patted his back. “Come on, let’s just get through it.”

After a second try, they finally made it through.

Jake and Alex took their turn, moving in perfect sync. It was clear they had an unspoken twin advantage. They completed the course without a single mistake.

Evan gave them an impressed nod. “Okay, that was freaky.”

Mr. Lucas clapped. “Great job, everyone. The key to teamwork is trust and communication, and you all did well.”

Tyler flopped onto a nearby beanbag. “Can we do an activity where I don’t almost fall on my face?”

Mr. Lucas chuckled. “Maybe. But first, let’s take a quick break before our next challenge.” Mr Lucas, then hands Jake and alex a prize bag.

Jake and Alex grinned as they took their prize bags. Alex peeked inside and pulled out a small piece of chocolate. “Nice. Free candy for being awesome.”

Mr. Lucas smiled. “That’s right. Each winner of our activities gets a prize bag, which can have candy, toys, or even special privileges.”

Evan leaned over to Noah. “Okay, now I actually care about winning.”

Noah smirked. “Yeah, we definitely need to step it up.”

Tyler crossed his arms. “Great. So now we have an incentive to actually try.”

Jordan chuckled. “What, bragging rights weren’t enough for you?”

Tyler scoffed. “I’d rather have candy than bragging rights.”

Mr. Lucas clapped his hands. “Alright, everyone, take a few minutes to relax. Our next activity will be a bit more challenging, so get ready.”

As the boys sat down, opening their water bottles and chatting amongst themselves, Jake nudged Alex. “Think we can keep up the winning streak?”

Alex grinned. “Obviously. We just have to make sure we don’t let our guard down.”

Evan stretched his arms. “Well, don’t get too comfortable. I’m definitely winning the next round.”

Jordan smirked. “Yeah? We’ll see about that.”

Mr. Lucas looked at the group and smiled. “I like the enthusiasm. Get ready, boys. The next game is all about quick thinking and teamwork.”

Mr. Lucas waited for the boys to settle down before announcing the next activity. “Alright, our next game is called ‘Speed Teamwork.'’ You’ll be split into pairs, and each pair will have to complete a short challenge together. The fastest team wins a prize bag.”

The boys perked up at the mention of a challenge.

Jake and Alex immediately paired up, exchanging confident grins. Noah quickly grabbed Evan’s arm. Jordan looked at Tyler, who sighed and nodded.

“Alright,” Mr. Lucas continued. “For this round, you and your partner will have to stack ten blocks into a tower without it falling over. Sounds simple, right? But here’s the catch—only one of you can use your hands, and the other can only give directions. No touching the blocks if you’re the one giving instructions!”

The boys groaned and laughed at the same time.

“This is gonna be impossible,” Tyler muttered.

Jordan smirked. “Nah, just listen to me and don’t mess up.”

Mr. Lucas set the timer. “Ready… set… go!”

The room filled with shouts as each team scrambled to stack their blocks.

“No, left! No, your other left!” Noah cried as Evan struggled to place a block in the right spot.

Jake and Alex worked in near silence, Jake quickly following Alex’s instructions. Their tower grew taller by the second.

Jordan, however, was determined to take things slow and steady. “Okay, move your hand slightly to the right. No, not that much—just a bit. Yes, there. Now, gently place it down.”

Tyler clenched his jaw in concentration as he carefully placed another block on top. “This is harder than I thought.”

Meanwhile, Evan’s tower wobbled dangerously. “Steady, steady,” Noah urged.

“Time!” Mr. Lucas called out.

All the teams took a step back. Jake and Alex’s tower stood tall, perfectly stacked. Jordan and Tyler’s were slightly crooked but still standing. Evan and Noah’s, however, collapsed at the last second.

“Well, looks like we have our winners,” Mr. Lucas said, gesturing toward Jake and Alex.

The two fist-bumped as Mr. Lucas handed them their prize bags.

Evan crossed his arms. “I call a rematch. That was rigged.”

Noah laughed. “You’re just mad we lost.”

Mr. Lucas chuckled. “Don’t worry, there will be plenty more games today. Let’s clean up, and then we’ll move on to our next challenge!”

As the boys cleaned up the blocks, Tyler huffed in frustration. “That was dumb,” he muttered under his breath, his arms crossed tightly.

Jordan glanced at him and raised an eyebrow. “Dude, relax. It’s just a game.”

But Tyler wasn’t relaxing. His face scrunched up, and his breathing became short and quick. The frustration bubbling inside him made it hard to think straight. The way he lost, the way Jake and Alex grinned with their prize bags—it all felt unfair.

Mr. Lucas, noticing Tyler’s tense posture, stepped closer. “Tyler, everything okay?”

Tyler didn’t answer right away. Instead, he rubbed at his eyes, feeling that familiar fog creeping in. His thoughts were getting jumbled, and the words he wanted to say weren’t forming right.

Jordan frowned, realizing what was happening. “Hey, uh… maybe take a deep breath?”

Tyler sniffled, his frustration shifting into something else entirely. He wanted to snap back, but his emotions were slipping further from his control. His fingers curled into the hem of his shirt as he let out a small whimper.

Mr. Lucas gave him a kind smile. “It’s alright, buddy. If you need a break, we can take one.”

Tyler shook his head stubbornly, but the determination in his teenage mind was fading fast. The stress, the rules, and the new environment—it were overwhelming. His shoulders sagged as the fight left him, and just like that, he wasn’t 15 anymore.

Jordan sighed, patting him on the back. “Well… it looks like Baby Tyler’s back.”

Evan, who had been watching from the side, winced. “Uh-oh.”

Mr. Lucas crouched down slightly. “It’s okay, Tyler. Let’s take a little timeout to regroup, alright?”

Tyler, now looking more lost than frustrated, hesitated before nodding. Mr. Lucas gently led him to the side while the others exchanged glances.

Jordan ran a hand through his hair. “Yeah, I definitely called that one.”

Evan sighed. “This daycare’s gonna be a long day.”

Jake nodded in agreement. “Yeah, Tyler doesn’t do well with rules he thinks are pointless.”

Evan crossed his arms. “I mean, Miss Rachel already gave him a timeout, and now he’s slipping. I figured it’d happen, but not this fast.”

Jordan smirked slightly. “I was thinking it was only gonna be a matter of time, especially after the timeout he got.”

Tyler sat on the side, his legs kicking slightly as he stared down at his lap. His mind had fully shifted now, and the frustration from earlier seemed to fade into confusion. He looked up at Mr. Lucas, his expression, is more childlike. “Mmm… done now?” he mumbled.

Mr. Lucas smiled patiently. “We’ll take our time, buddy. No rush.”

Meanwhile, Noah, who had been sitting nearby, sighed. “Welp, at least we know one thing for sure—this daycare’s gonna be real interesting.”

Mr. Lucas clapped his hands together, drawing the boys' attention. "Alright, everyone, great job with the introductions! Now, let’s move on to our next activity."

He walked over to a large whiteboard and picked up a marker. "This next game is called ‘Team Challenge.’ You’ll be split into pairs, and each team will have to work together to complete a fun task. The winning team, of course, gets another prize bag."

Jake and Alex exchanged a competitive glance, already excited. Evan leaned back in his chair, waiting to hear the rules. Jordan nudged Tyler, who was still adjusting to his baby-brain state.

"Think you can handle this, bud?" Jordan whispered.

Tyler blinked up at him, his mind still a little foggy, but he nodded slowly.

Mr. Lucas smiled. "Alright, let's get you all paired up!"

Mr. Lucas scanned the group and quickly began pairing them up.

"Jake and Alex, since you two seem eager, you're a team," he said with a chuckle. "Evan, you’ll pair up with Noah. Jordan, you’re with Tyler."

Tyler, still slipping into his baby brain, simply nodded at Jordan, who gave him an encouraging pat on the shoulder.

"Alright, your challenge is simple," Mr. Lucas continued, pulling a large bin onto the table. "Inside this bin are puzzle pieces. Each team gets a small puzzle, and the first team to complete theirs wins a prize bag. But remember, teamwork is key. If I see any arguing, your team is out!"

The boys gathered around as Mr. Lucas handed out their puzzles. Jake and Alex immediately got to work, their competitive nature kicking in. Evan and Noah shared a confident look, quickly sorting their pieces. Jordan kept glancing at Tyler, who seemed slower to react, his fingers fumbling with the pieces.

"Come on, buddy, let’s do this together," Jordan said, sliding a piece toward him. "We’ve got this."

Tyler looked at the piece in his hand, his mind still shifting, but after a few seconds, he placed it down in the correct spot.

"That’s it, Ty! Keep going," Jordan encouraged.

As the race continued, the boys focused on their puzzles, determined to win the prize bag.

As the puzzles neared completion, the tension in the room grew. Jake and Alex were fast, but their overconfidence led to a few mistakes. Evan and Noah were steady, working well together, but Jordan and Tyler—despite Tyler's slow start—were catching up quickly.

"Almost there!" Jake muttered, fitting another piece into place.

"Done!" Alex declared, only to realize they were still missing three pieces.

At that exact moment, Jordan slid the final piece into place.

"Finished!" Jordan exclaimed, raising his hands triumphantly.

Mr. Lucas inspected their puzzle, then glanced at the others. "Looks like Jordan and Tyler win—by just three pieces!"

Tyler blinked as if he was coming back to himself and then grinned. "We won?"

Jordan clapped him on the back. "We won!"

Mr. Lucas handed them a prize bag filled with candy and small toys. "Great job, boys! Teamwork makes all the difference."

Tyler, still feeling the effects of his baby brain, grabbed a lollipop and popped it into his mouth with a smile. "Maybe this place isn’t so bad after all," he murmured.

Jake crossed his arms, pouting slightly. "Next time, we’re winning."

Mr. Lucas laughed. "That’s the spirit! Alright, boys, let’s get ready for our next activity."

As Mr. Lucas was about to introduce the next activity, Tyler suddenly stiffened, his expression shifting from triumph to embarrassment. Jordan, sitting beside him, immediately noticed.

"You okay, dude?" Jordan asked quietly.

Tyler swallowed hard and whispered back, "I... I just peed."

Jordan glanced around, realizing that Tyler’s baby brain had taken full control. He leaned in slightly. "Uh, do you need to tell someone, or...?"

Before Tyler could answer, Miss Rachel walked in to check on the group. Noticing Tyler’s nervous expression and slightly fidgeting posture, she gave him a knowing look.

"Tyler, sweetheart, do you need a change?" she asked gently, crouching next to him.

Tyler’s face turned red, and he gave a small nod.

Miss Rachel smiled warmly. "It’s okay, honey. Let’s get you taken care of, then you can come right back for the next activity."

Jordan gave him a reassuring nod as Miss Rachel took Tyler’s hand and led him out of the room. Mr. Lucas, noticing the moment, waited patiently before clapping his hands together.

"Alright, while Tyler gets taken care of, let’s move on to our next game!" he said, keeping the energy up.

The rest of the boys refocused, though Jordan couldn’t help but glance toward the door, wondering how long Tyler would be gone.

Mr Lucas turned to Jordan and said, Don't worry, Miss Rachel is freaky fast at diaper changes, and out of you 6 boys with 4 of you in diapers, I'm surprised it was only him so far.

Jordan chuckled nervously at Mr. Lucas’s comment, shifting in his seat. “Yeah, I guess that’s one way to look at it.”

Mr. Lucas grinned. “Miss Rachel has been doing this for years—she’s faster than a pit crew at a race track. Tyler will be back before we even get through the first round of the next game.”

Mr. Lucas clapped his hands together. “That’s the spirit! Alright, next up is a teamwork challenge. You’ll all be paired up and have to work together to solve a puzzle. The first team to finish wins a prize bag!”

As the boys paired up, the door creaked open, and Tyler walked back in, looking much more relaxed. Miss Rachel gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder before heading back out.

“Told ya she was fast,” Mr. Lucas said with a wink. “Alright, let’s get started!”

The boys examined their completed puzzles closely, realizing that each one depicted the very room they were sitting in. However, something was off.

Mr. Lucas smiled. “That’s right, boys! Your next challenge is to figure out what’s missing from your puzzle that exists in this room. The first team to find it wins.”

Jordan and Tyler scanned their puzzle, looking around the room for anything that didn’t match. Jake and Alex were already whispering to each other, their eyes darting between the puzzle and the room.

Noah and Evan, meanwhile, were studying every corner. “I think I see it,” Evan whispered. “Look at the bookshelf—there’s a trophy in real life, but not in the puzzle.”

Noah’s eyes widened. “That’s gotta be it!” He shot his hand up. “Mr. Lucas, we found it! The trophy on the bookshelf is missing from the puzzle.”

Mr. Lucas checked their puzzle, then turned to the bookshelf. He grinned. “That’s correct! Noah and Evan win this round!”

Evan pumped his fist. “Finally!”

Mr. Lucas handed them each a prize bag. “Great work, boys. Now, let’s move on to our next activity—this one’s going to test your memory and attention to detail.”

Mr. Lucas clapped his hands together, gathering the boys’ attention. “Alright, everyone, this next activity is called Memory Match! I’m going to show you all a tray with different objects on it. You’ll have thirty seconds to look at it before I cover it up. Then, you’ll have to write down as many objects as you can remember. The team with the most correct answers wins!”

He walked over to a nearby table and picked up a large tray, carefully placing it in the center of the room. On it were various small objects—a toy car, a rubber duck, a pencil, a small book, a whistle, a marble, a stuffed bear, and a pair of sunglasses.

“Ready?” Mr. Lucas asked. The boys nodded. “Alright, thirty seconds starts now!”

Everyone leaned in, eyes darting between the objects as they tried to memorize as many as possible. Jordan muttered under his breath, whispering the items in a list to himself. Tyler, still slipping into baby mode, stared at the stuffed bear with an odd sense of comfort.

After thirty seconds, Mr. Lucas quickly covered the tray with a cloth. “Alright! Now, each team, write down as many items as you remember. You have one minute—go!”

Jake and Alex immediately started scribbling down their list, confident in their memory. Noah and Evan whispered back and forth, double-checking each other’s answers. Jordan glanced at Tyler, who was doodling a bear on his paper instead of writing anything.

“Ty, come on, focus,” Jordan urged.

Tyler snapped back for a moment and quickly tried to recall what he saw.

As time ran out, Mr. Lucas clapped his hands. “Pens down! Let’s see how you all did.”

One by one, he reviewed each team’s list, tallying up their correct answers. “Alright, the winners for this round… Jake and Alex! You got seven out of eight, correct? Nice job, boys!”

He handed them each another prize bag.

As the game wrapped up, Miss Rachel walked back into the room and gave Tyler a knowing look. “Alright, Tyler, let’s get you changed before the next activity,” she said with a kind smile.

Tyler blushed but didn’t resist as she led him out. Jordan sighed, shaking his head. “I knew it was only a matter of time.”

Mr. Lucas chuckled. “Well, while Tyler gets taken care of, let’s get ready for our next challenge—it’s going to be a fun one!”

Mr. Lucas clapped his hands together, signaling for the boys to gather around. “Alright, boys, the next activity is an obstacle course! But not just any obstacle course—this one is designed to test your teamwork and patience.”

He gestured toward a section of the room where a course had been set up. There were small hurdles to step over, a tunnel to crawl through, a set of balance beams, and finally, a puzzle to solve at the end.

“The catch?” Mr. Lucas continued. “You’ll be working in pairs, and both of you have to finish at the same time to move on to the next stage. That means if your partner falls behind, you have to help them.”

Jake and Alex teamed up, while Noah and Evan formed another pair. Jordan and Tyler team up.

The first pair, Jake and Alex, stepped up to the starting line. “On your mark…" get set… go!”

They took off, leaping over the hurdles with ease. Crawling through the tunnel slowed them down slightly, but they managed to keep a steady pace. When they reached the balance beams, Alex wobbled slightly, but Jake steadied him before they both reached the puzzle station.

It was a simple jigsaw puzzle, but with only a few pieces, it required quick thinking. They worked fast, piecing it together just in time. “Done!” they called.

“Great job, boys! 2 minutes and 14 seconds,” Mr. Lucas announced.

Noah and Evan went next, working well together. Evan, knowing the daycare better, had an easier time maneuvering the obstacles. They finished in 2 minutes and 22 seconds—just slightly behind Jake and Alex.

Just as Mr. Lucas was about to call for Jordan’s turn. Tyler still looked a little dazed, his baby brain not fully gone, but Jordan nudged him. “Alright, partner. Time to focus.”

They stepped up to the starting line.

“Ready… set… go!”

Jordan took off, but Tyler hesitated, staring at the hurdles like they were mountains. “Come on, Ty, step over them,” Jordan urged.

Tyler clumsily lifted his legs, nearly tripping, but Jordan grabbed his arm and steadied him. “Okay, crawl through the tunnel now.”

Tyler dropped to his hands and knees, moving at a snail’s pace. Jordan sighed but crawled beside him, encouraging him forward. By the time they reached the balance beams, the others were snickering.

“This isn’t looking good for them,” Noah whispered to Evan.

Jordan guided Tyler onto the beam, but Tyler’s balance was shaky. “I don’t like this,” he mumbled.

“Just hold onto me,” Jordan said, grabbing his arm. Slowly, they made it across.

Finally, they reached the puzzle station. Jordan hurried to put pieces together while Tyler sat there staring. “Ty, help me out here,” Jordan said.

Tyler picked up a piece and placed it in the wrong spot. Jordan groaned, swapping it out quickly before finishing.

“Done!” Jordan called, exhausted.

“3 minutes and 40 seconds,” Mr. Lucas announced. “Not the fastest, but you made it through as a team. That’s what matters.”

Jordan shook his head, muttering, “I knew this would be a struggle.”

Tyler just giggled, still half in baby mode.

Mr. Lucas clapped his hands. “Alright, boys, great work today! That’s the last activity before lunch. Let’s head to the cafeteria and get some food.”

The boys cheered, eager to eat. As they walked, Jordan sighed. “Tyler, if you go baby brain at lunch, I’m making you sit at the little kids' table.”

Tyler just smiled innocently.

As Mr. Lucas leads the boys to lunch, Tyler finally recovers his teenage brain, asking how many challenges they won.

Mr. Lucas raises an eyebrow with a playful smile. "Well, it looks like we’ve got a competitive group here. Let’s break it down: You and Jordan won 1 challenge, Evan and Noah won 1 challenge, and Jake and Alex? Well, you guys have really been on fire, winning 4 challenges. Keep it up. The day’s not over yet!"

Tyler looks impressed. "Whoa, Jake and Alex are on a roll."

As they sit down, Mr. Lucas points to the trays of fish sticks and mac and cheese. "Alright, guys, today’s lunch is fish sticks and mac and cheese. It's not the fanciest, but it's definitely a crowd favorite."

Tyler’s face lights up. "Fish sticks and mac and cheese? This is the best day ever!"

Alex laughs. "You say that every time we get mac and cheese."

Jake grins and digs in. "Can't argue with that. It’s always a win."

The rest of the day passes quickly with the boys finishing their remaining activities, including a few more challenges. They have a blast, laughing and bonding with their classmates and teachers. By the time the final bell rings, they’re exhausted but happy.

Mrs. Faulkner arrives at Sunny Smiles just in time to pick them up. She greets them with a warm smile as they gather their things.

"How was your day, boys?" she asks as they file into the car.

Jake grins. "It was awesome! We won a ton of challenges."

Alex adds, "Yeah, we definitely came out on top today."

Tyler, still energized, adds, "And the fish sticks were the best part!"

Mrs. Faulkner chuckles. "I’m glad to hear it. Let’s get home, then, and you can tell me all about it."

Mrs. Faulkner nods, her expression calm but curious as Miss Rachel approaches. "Thanks for letting me know, Rachel. I appreciate the heads-up."

Miss Rachel gives a small smile. "Tyler did great for most of the day, but he had a little hiccup. He broke a rule, so we had to give him a timeout. But he took it well, understood the reason, and was back on track shortly after."

Mrs. Faulkner turns to Tyler, giving him a gentle but firm look. "Tyler, I’m glad you understood the situation, but remember to keep it together next time, alright?"

Tyler nods sheepishly. "I got it, Mom. I won’t do it again."

Mrs. Faulkner smiles. "Good. Now let’s get home and you can tell me about the rest of your day." She gives Miss Rachel a thankful nod before guiding the boys out to the car.

**Day 2:**

The boys arrive at Sunny Smiles, greeted by a cheerful Miss Rachel. She explains that today they’ll be working on a group project where each team must create a tower using only building blocks. The boys are split into pairs: Jake and Alex, Tyler and Evan, and Jordan and Noah.

Jake and Alex quickly get to work, strategizing and competing to build the tallest tower. Their tower comes out the tallest, but Tyler and Evan’s is sturdier. The day ends with everyone receiving a small reward for their teamwork, and Tyler remembers to follow the rules this time, avoiding any timeouts.

At the end of the day, Mrs. Faulkner picks them up and hears all about the friendly competition. Tyler’s proud of his team for finishing strong, though he admits, “Jake and Alex built a better tower, but we didn’t give up!” Mrs. Faulkner smiles, glad to hear his reflection on teamwork.

**Day 3:**

The boys arrive at daycare, and today’s theme is “Adventure Day."” The kids are told to dress up as their favorite explorers, so Jake, Alex, and Tyler all come in wearing their best outdoor gear. Miss Rachel leads them on a scavenger hunt around the daycare center. Each team has to find hidden items like a red stone, a leaf, and a feather.

Jake and Alex, as usual, are quick to lead their team through the hunt. Tyler and Evan are a bit slower but still excited as they search the daycare for clues. In the end, Jake and Alex find the most items first, but everyone wins a prize for effort, and Tyler, for once, doesn’t end up in timeout, showing improvement in his patience.

When Mrs. Faulkner picks them up. She’s impressed by their costumes. Tyler even mentions, “I didn’t rush today—I let the others help me!”

---

**Day 4:**

Today is “Art Day” at Sunny Smiles, and the boys are excited to make their masterpieces. They’re given different art supplies: paints, markers, and clay, and are challenged to create something that represents who they are.

Jake decides to paint a dragon, Alex goes for a large mountain landscape, and Tyler makes a clay dinosaur. Throughout the day, the boys work on their projects, and Tyler is especially proud of his dinosaur, taking extra time to shape it just right.

Miss Rachel compliments their work at the end of the day. "You all did amazing today! Tyler, I think your dinosaur looks fantastic." Tyler grins, feeling accomplished.

When Mrs. Faulkner arrives, and Tyler shows her his dinosaur. “It’s a T-Rex!” he exclaims proudly.

Mrs. Faulkner smiles warmly. "I love it! Great work today, all of you."

**Day 5:**

It’s the last day of the week at Sunny Smiles, and the boys are a bit tired but excited for “Game Day."” The daycare has set up various stations for different games: a three-legged race, a balloon toss, and a trivia quiz.

The boys compete in the three-legged race, with Jake and Alex breezing through the race with perfect coordination. Tyler and Evan struggle at first but finally manage to work together and cross the finish line with a lot of laughter.

Later, during the trivia quiz, Tyler answers a question correctly, boosting his confidence after the earlier race mishaps. They all end up earning little trophies for their efforts.

As Mrs. Faulkner picks them up. She can see the boys are tired but happy. “Sounds like a fun day!” she says. Tyler beams. “Yeah! And I didn’t mess up once!”

As they head home, it’s clear that the boys have made real progress over the last few days, learning how to work together, follow the rules, and enjoy their time at Sunny Smiles.

As they walk into the house, Mrs. Faulkner glances over at the boys with a playful smile. "So, boys," she says, "was Sunny Smiles really all that bad like you thought it was gonna be?"

Jake grins, tossing his backpack onto the couch. "Honestly, it was way better than I expected. We had a lot of fun, even with the challenges and rules."

Alex nods in agreement. "Yeah, I thought it was just going to be boring, but it was actually really cool. I liked the art day and the scavenger hunt."

Tyler chimes in, his eyes bright. "I didn’t think I’d like it, but I did! And I got to make a T-Rex, so that made everything awesome!"

Mrs. Faulkner smiles, relieved. "I’m so glad to hear that. Sounds like you all had a good time after all."

Jake shrugs with a grin. "You were right, Mom. We just had to give it a chance."

Mrs. Faulkner turns to Jordan with a curious smile. "And how about you, Jordan? What did you think of Sunny Smiles?"

Jordan, who had been quiet, shrugs. "It was alright, I guess," he says, trying to sound indifferent. But after a moment, he smirks. "Okay, fine. It was actually kinda fun. The games were cool, and I didn’t expect to win any challenges, but Tyler and I got one."

Mrs. Faulkner chuckles. "See? It's not so bad, after all."

Jordan nods. "Yeah, I guess I could survive another week there."

Tyler grins. "That’s basically Jordan-speak for ‘I had a blast.’"

Everyone laughs as they settle in for the evening, the boys finally admitting—at least to themselves—that Sunny Smiles wasn’t nearly as bad as they’d thought.

Mrs. Faulkner smiles at Jordan. "Since your leg is doing much better from our PT time after daycare, how about you help me make dinner tonight?"

Jordan hesitates for a second, then nods. "Yeah, I can do that. What are we making?"

"Spaghetti and garlic bread," she says. "I’ll handle the sauce, and you can help with the bread and setting the table."

Jordan smirks. "Alright, but if the garlic bread turns out amazing, I’m taking full credit."

Mrs. Faulkner chuckles. "Deal."

The other boys watch as Jordan follows her into the kitchen, and Tyler grins. "Guess that means extra-good food tonight."

Jake and Alex laugh, and the house settles into its usual evening routine, with the comforting sounds of cooking and conversation filling the air.

As the smell of garlic and tomato sauce fills the house, Mrs. Faulkner sets the last dish on the table. "Alright, boys, dinner is served!"

Jordan steps back with a satisfied smirk. "And I expect full praise for the garlic bread."

Tyler eagerly grabs a piece and takes a big bite. His eyes widen. "Okay, not bad, Jordan. You might actually have a future in this."

Jake and Alex dig in as well, nodding in approval. "Yeah, this is pretty good," Alex admits.

Mrs. Faulkner smiles as she takes her seat. "Great job, Jordan. And thanks for helping."

Jordan shrugs, trying to play it cool, but a small smile creeps onto his face. "No problem."

The family enjoys their meal, the conversation light and filled with laughter. It’s a good end to a long but fun week at Sunny Smiles.

As Mrs. Faulkner takes a bite of her spaghetti. She smiles at the boys. "And just think—you’ve already made it through your five days. Miss Harper will be back tomorrow, so no more daycare for you."

Jake leans back in his chair with a satisfied sigh. "Can’t say I’ll miss waking up early for it, but it wasn’t bad."

Alex nods. "Yeah, we survived."

Tyler, chewing on his second piece of garlic bread, grins. "And we totally won the most challenges."

Mrs. Faulkner chuckles. "That you did. But it looks like only Evan will be going back since he actually likes it there. He gets to spend time with Noah."

Evan, who has been quietly enjoying his meal, looks up with a smile. "Yeah, it’s fun. Noah and I have a good time, and the activities are pretty cool."

Jordan smirks. "Well, better you than me."

Mrs. Faulkner laughs. "Fair enough. But I’m proud of all of you for giving it a chance."

The boys finish their meal, feeling a sense of accomplishment—not just for surviving daycare, but for making the best of it.
