______________________________________________________________
'There was just something about you... you just stood out from the crowd... and I knew that I could trust you.' That's what Tristen had said when I asked why me. I felt his honesty when he answered and I think I trust him. He could've seen that I kept my memories of the trips to the aquarium but he never asked me of anything but my company. He could've cut me off and find someone else that was immuned. Plus, he believed he saw me beforeâ
"Oof." I stumbled to my feet.
"Are you drunk?" A voice echoed. "Do you need to puke?"
I swayed on my feet and giggled. "No, I am not... drunk." I touched my chin, thinking. "I was just thinking about someone... hot."
"Ooooooo." Bodhi jumped into my vision. "Who is this cute human boy?"
I laughed. "He's not human." I started swaying to a nonexistent music, working off my restlessness. "I wanna dance!" I grabbed Bodhi and dipped her.
Bodhi yelled and then laughed. "I like this Meredith!"
I twirled her around, "Well, stick around and you'll see more."
Bodhi grabbed a remote and hit a button. A song came on from the large speaker near the television. I squealed in excitement, I snaked my arms up and danced around the couch, I stumbled here and there due to Bodhi's shoes. Bodhi laughed as she head banged to the beat.
I didn't know how long Bodhi and I danced. The sun was still up, so there's that. I was breathing hard and so I let myself dropped on the couch, feeling pretty much sober. Bodhi dropped next to me, breathing perfectly fine. She turned to me. "Feel better?"
I nodded. "Yeah." I study my steadied hand. "I just needed to work off my nerves."
"Meredith." She bounced on the couch as she rearranged herself to face me with no smile. I stiffened. It's serious Bodhi again and for some reason, that freaks me out.
She grabbed me hand. "I just want you to know that you're not being used. I could have find someone else that is immune but you are so much more." She smiled and grabbed my cheeks. "You kept our secrets."
And she's back.
I tried to pull my cheeks out of her tiny grip. "Augh!"
"Oops." She let go. "Sorry, still don't know my strength out of water yet." She giggled like a madwoman.
"Crazy shark."
She rolled her eyes. She bends down and begun putting on a thick gothic pair of shoes. "So sensitive."
"First time on land?"
"How did you guess?" Her eyes rounded as she looked at me in surprise.
I looked at her floor, covered in shoes and socks. "Just a lucky guess." I said sarcastically.
"Being on land is awesome!" She jumped on her boots of added inches and she stood a bit taller. "I feel lighter and stronger on land." She twirled, "There's so many cool stuff here!" She pulled a grocery bag from the floor. "And I found these ambrosia of the gods!" She dropped the plastic bag at my feet.
Oh boy...
I pulled the plastic bag open.
Shocked, I stared at millions balled up foil dove chocolates. "You... ate... them all?" How was she alive and not sick. I stood up and stared at Bodhi, looking for evident sickness on her.
She grinned madly, appearing just fine. She frowned when I didn't smiled and still stared at her.
I raised my hands in defeat. I sighed. "You shouldn't eat so much chocolate, Bodhi, it's not good for you." I crossed my arms. "How long have you been on land?"
"Hmmmm." She tapped her chin as she glanced upward, thinking. "Five days."
I rubbed my temple. "You have so much to learn."
She rolled her eyes. "I'm not useless. I studied and know some things about human cultures." I thought about all the things we talked about. She's right. She knew what cars and microwaves were. She knew about shoes â that's for sure.
Bodhi's lips twitched. "So, are you gonna tell me which mer lured you in the aquarium?" She sat next to me.
I stuttered. "Whaâ"
She rolled her eyes and lowered in her voice. "What do you mean? I don't know what you're talking about. We're just friends." Her voice returned to normal. "Save it for someone whose heard it all."
"I don't sound like that." I frowned. "I've been told I have a melodic voice." I sniffed proudly.
"Stop changing the subjectâ" She leaned onto my shoulder. "And tell me!" She grabbed my arm.
I tried to shake her free from me. "I don't know what you're talking about." I felt my face heating up. "But if you must know, I'll tell you his name."
Bodhi lets go of me and gave me her full attention. "Finally." She smiled gleefully.
I rolled my eyes. "If you must know, his name is Tristen."
She stilled and begun to blink rapidly. "Tristen?"
I stopped. "Yeah.. Tristen."
Then she smiled. A very sly smile. "Tristen with dark hair and blue tail?"
"You know him?" I asked excitedly.
"Of course!" She stood up and walked to another room. She yelled over her shoulder. "My boyfriend Gale and Tristen are best friends."
Oh right. How could I forget that? I followed her to another room. "Did also know him when growing up?" I stopped when I reached what look like her bedroom. She still maintained the closest vomit aesthetic as well in this room. I toed her shoes out of the way as I went to sit on her bed that is covered in dresses.
"No, I didn't know them as a child. I didn't meet Gale till I was a teen."
I grinned. "So who made the first move?"
She laughed. "I did, of course." She shook her head as if recalling her memories. "Only 'cause I saw him first." She smiled. "I knew he was my shi'amare."
I sat up. "Your what?"
She slapped her forehead. "Right. That's not english." She tapped her chin. "How do you say it in english?"
I sputtered. "I don't know." An idea occurred. "Describe it."
"Uhm..." She paced. "Wow. Okay. Well, it's celebrated in our culture when we find our shi'amare." She shook her head as if in awe. "It's rare and can change your life. Shi means..." She snapped her fingers. "Like yourself but without the body, your consciousness..."
"Soul?"
"Yeah!" She pointed. "That's it." She continued. "Amare is something like love... but the english word love doesn't seem strong enough to translate it, but shi'amare is loosely translated as 'the love of my soul.'"
Oh! Like soulmates?" I repeated what she said. "Shi'amare. The love of my soul." I smiled. "That's beautiful." I leaned back. "So what was it like when you first saw Gale."
"Ah well, after I beat his ass. We got to talkinâ"
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Oh, right. I met him when I joined the sea legion as a soldier." She began lifting the dresses from the beds by it's hangers. "We were running drills on hand in hand combat, then we were paired up." She smiled in memory.
"You're a soldier?"
"Did I say that right? Soldier? Someone who fights in wars?"
"Yes... You said it right." I answered slowly. "You fought in wars?" I looked at her small frame and her dark, large eyes as she was rifling through her collection of dresses on her bed. I think of Gale and his torso covered in scars and tattoos. Tristen had mentioned that tattoos must be earned. I looked at Bodhi's arms.
There it was.
Her forearms were littered with pale scars â not as much as Gale â but no tattoos. Maybe they're were where I can't see them. I wondered how many wars Bodhi has fought. I can only imagine Gale fought a lot.
She grimaced." Yes. I have." She waved her hand. "That's another story for another time that needs alcohol presented."
I rolled my eyes. "You would find any time suitable for a drink."
"Well, we still have to enjoy the gifts of life." Bodhi lifted a slinky, long red dress. "Here, try this."
"Ha." I pointed at the absent cover of the top. "Where the frick-frack is my boobs gonna go?" I touched a pair of strip fabric. "Here? In this floss of a cover?"
She paused, then she began looking around.
"What are you looking for?"
"Your nun outfit. I think you lost it by accident."
I snatched the dress out of her hand. "I'll try it." I huffed as I went to her bathroom.
I shimmied the dress on and â
Holy moly!
I turned in front of the bathroom mirror.
I was hot. I gave an airy chuckle as I checked out my behind. Oh hey there little butt. I didn't know you were there.
A scream sounded.
I rushed to the bathroom door and threw it open. "Bodhi!"
She was standing on the bed, wailing as she pointed at something on the ground. "Spider!" She cried. "Burn it! Annihilate it!"
I looked down. Sure enough. There was a tiny little spider on one of Bodhi's shoes. I stared at her in disbelief as she stared at the spider, eyes wide with terror. I shook my head as I muttered. "Some soldier..." I sighed and went out to the kitchen.
"Wheâ where are you going?" Bodhi hollered. "You dare trap me here?"
I grabbed a glass and a magazine from the counter. "Just wait!" I returned to the room and scuffled the spider in the glass. I stood up as I trapped it with the magazine. I went to the balcony and released it outside. I closed the balcony door behind me andâ
"Hurry up and get your stuff." Bodhi said as she walked by me and went to the entrance table to write a note. "We are leaving."
"Whaâwhy?" I sputtered.
She marched back to her bedroom and took out a pair of pink suitcases. "We don't know if that demon spawn laid eggs in this hotel."She huffed as she threw her shoes in mismatched pair and topped with a few of her clothes in her suitcases.
"I think you're being a tad bit dramatiâ"
"What are you waiting for?" She wailed. "The demon spawns could be hatching right at this very moment!" She grabbed her other already packed suitcase. "I'm staying with you from now on." She speed walked to the door and when she realized I hadn't moved. "C'mon you slow giant!"
I faltered as I went to grab my clothes and tugged my converse on. "What about yourâ" I gestured to the chaos of her shoes. "Stuff?"
"Nick will pack them for me and send them to your place for me. I already wrote a note and I just need your address." With that, she scurried out the penthouse.
I sighed as I looked heavenward. I went to the note she left on the entry table and read it.
'Nick,
I'm afraid I have been found by my enemy and must leave before the spawns hatch. You will be missed.
Bodhi
P.S. You should really get a haircut and a nice shave.
P.S.S. Pack and send my stuff hereâ'
I shook my head and scribbled my address at the bottom. I left to follow Bodhi down to the elevator.
"You look hot in that."
"Huh." I looked down at my incredible asset. "Oh, right." I looked at the reflection of me on the elevator door. The red dress complimented my dark skin perfectly. The deep halter dress wrapped my slim frame, showing off my curves. The long slit on the bottom of the ankle length dress run up my legs.
"Neptune." Bodhi whistled. "You got legs for miles." Her eyes twinkled. "Keep the dress. It was too big for me." She shouldered me. "Maybe you should wear it to the aquarium.
My face heat at the thought of Tristen seeing me in this revealing dress. "Hell no." I palmed the soft fabric. "It's way too fancy and revealing for me to wear it anywhere."
She cackled with glee. "You're right. You would give our prinâ I mean, our sweet poor Tristen a heart attack."
I laughed.
The elevator door opened and we went out to the lobby. Passerbyâmostly menâ did a double take at me. My face heat and I searched for a bathroom. I whispered to Bodhi. "Let me change." I gestured to my chest. "I can' t exactly go home to my parents in this." I went to the bathroom to change.
I rushed out of the bathroom to meet Bodhi in the lobby who was drinking a martini from the bar. I went up to her. "My parents!" I slapped my forehead. "I completely forgot about them.
"What about them?" She blinked at me. "Just tell them the truth."
I hissed. "The truth?" I snorted. "Right! Just tell them that you're a mermaid soldier here to rescue your boyfriend from the clutches of the dark fays?" I snorted. "Think again."
"Well, that does sound bad when you say it like that."
"There's literally no other way to say it that wouldn't sound bad." An idea occurred. "I have an idea. I'll explained on the way," I pointed at her. "Don't you dare... be you."
Bodhi followed after me. "What?" She finished off her martini in one chug. "Parents love me."
I sighed as I turned to trudged to the valet.
I'm definitely gonna be grounded.
