Adrenaline spiked and I panicked. I searched for a hiding spot in the dark and quickly burrowed behind the boxes, trying very hard to not knock anything over. I crouched behind the boxes and quietly slid them closer to me, creating a fortress of boxes. I hunched over–trying to make my nearly six feet tall frame smaller.

Oh god. I breathed shallowly. Is today the day when my luck finally runs out? I knew it was too good to be true that I haven't been caught sneaking in here all this time.

Click.

Light flooded the storage, painting the wooden walls with an orange hue. Two shadows moved across the wall. My heart thumped loudly in my chest, blood pounded in my head and I desperately try to calmly breathe through my nose.

"Let's get this fucking over with." A rough, male voice said.

A female laugh followed. "If you hadn't killed those human workers, we wouldn't have to be the ones feeding the damn fish."

"They were getting on my damn nerve, Shade!" The voice growled. "That sixteen year old boy wouldn't stop doing that damn dance called the floss. And that human female..." He inhaled. "Would. Not. Stop. With that fucking tik tok video!" He roared and a clash followed.

I jumped and indistinctly put a hand over my mouth to hold back a whimper. The two voices were dark fays. One of them just killed two humans. Oh god... They were killing humans.

"Oh come on, Burn. Couldn't you just have waited till I hired more humans?" Shade complained. "Then we wouldn't have to be doing this."

I shifted slightly and peeked out between the crack of two boxes, then I saw two dark fays in their mid-twenties. Shade, the woman fay stood in front of Burn with a scowl. I shook my head and did a double take.

What the frick frak?

When one thinks of dark fay... I think of someone who is dressed like a goth or an emo–clothed in black, pale skin and decorated with piercings.

Not this.

Shade had pastel pink hair with streaks of pale blue. Her big, baby blue eyes were glaring at the man named Burn.

Whoa, that hair.

Burn was a tall, lanky fay. But his hair... I couldn't stop staring. It was so red. It almost seemed to emit its own glow. No way that could be his real color. His face was angular–high cheekbones and sharp jaw-line.

They both wore the aquarium worker uniform. Polo green shirt with cargo shorts. Their height difference was almost comical. Shade was petite and curvy where Burn was towering and slim.

What a sight these two were...

Shade moved closer to Burn. She ran a finger up his chest. "Plus, I was upset that I wasn't invited to your little party with the humans." She pouted.

Burn growled."Well, you didn't miss much." He grabbed her finger and wrenched it away. "They were lousy partiers." He asked, "How much time do we have before we have to feed the stupid fish?"

Shade rolled her large eyes. "I don't give a damn. They can starve a bit longer." She fished something out of her pocket. "Look what I scored." She shook something white and thin at Burn.

Was that weed?

"Thank Nyx." Burn groaned. "What are you waiting for? Light it up!" He sat on the floor, leaning against the wall where Shade sat next to, lighting the paper.

Dammit. I was going to be here forever. My back was cramping and I was sure I was leaving a pool of sweat.

"Kol has been riding my dick on finding the mer prince. He's been driving me fuckin' insane." He grabbed the weed and inhaled deeply. He moaned. "Oh Nyx, that's the stuff."

I was right, the dark fays didn't know they have the mer prince already. I hope it stays that way.

Shade giggled."I think it's hilarious when Kol gets on to Mr.Grey when he fucks up." She sighed. "Nyx, Kol is so damn hot when he's angry that I wanna cry. Too bad he is too whipped by our dark princess. He got his head so far up her ass, he can't see anyone else." Shade grabbed the weed and took a long drag.

"Doesn't mean I can't change his mind." Burn licked his lips lustfully.

Shade laughed lunatically along with Burn. Looks like the weed was working.

Shade inhaled the weed before handing it back to Burn. "So how many mer you bagged this week?"

Burn inhaled the weed and then spoke, the fumes coming out of his mouth like some fire breathing demon. He might as well be since his answer sent chills down my spine. "I bagged about four mers this week. They didn't fucking talk." He grinned darkly. "But they didn't die in vain. I still had my fun torturing them."

My stomach flipped and I wanted to vomit.

Burn continued. "What about you?"

"Only two." She frowned. "Kol said that I got too carried away so he forbade me of interrogation duty." She sighed in frustration. "Kol just needs to know how to loosen up."

Burn scoffed. "No one would when the Dark princess puts you in charge of overlooking the aquarium of mers and two glamours to maintain. Also not to mind all the dark fays." He wrapped his lips around the weed and breathed, he laid his head back on the wall to exhale. "And he has to look out for some daft dark fays like Mr. Grey and Sable."

Shade twisted her lips in anger. "Nyx, I fucking hate Sable." She snatched the weed from Burn and angrily breathed in the smoke. "She act like the whole damn world should kiss the floor where she walked."

Burn cackled. "You just dislike her since she always kicks your ass in combat."

Shade jumped to her feet and kicked the boxes that I was hiding behind. I jumped but I was proud that I didn't make a sound. Shade screeched. "That was one time!"

Burn giggled madly. "One time was enough for you–"

The secret door knob twisted.

I stiffened. Shade and Burn silenced.

The doors opened ominously.

A dark figure walked in the room, silently closing the door behind him with a daunting thud.

All the air in the room was sucked out and the storage room instantly felt smaller.

Fear overcame me like never before. My skin crawled then turning into ice. I wanted to run. I wanted to sob. My eyes widened at the formidable dark fay.

How did I know he was dark?

I just knew.

He was darkness personified. His sleek, long icy blond hair was combed back with shaved sides. His almond eyes were voids of color–pale grey... those eyes... they emit darkness and violence like no other. They were the eyes of a predator. He left no question of what fay he was. He was dark, through and through.

Shade and Burn quickly got to their feet and bowed their heads. "Kol," They both said.

Kol twisted his lips. "What the fuck are you two doing here?" His eyes searched them from head to toes. He landed on Burn's hand, holding the weed. Kol growled, he reached down and snatched the weed from Burn. Kol snuffed it out with his bare fingers, then stuffed it in his jeans pocket. "Are you disobeying my orders?" He asked lowly.

Shade raised her chin, but her eyes did not meet Kol's. She answered. "No, General Kol."

"Burn?" Kol voice lowered threatening.

"No, General." Burn answered softly.

Kol grabbed his chin and raised it. Kol snarled. "What was that?"

"No, General." Burn said louder.

Kol laughed and pushed Burn's chin away. "Fucking useless is what you all are." Kol yanked a dagger out from his back pocket and moved at a speed that my eyes couldn't followed. Next thing I know, he had Burn's tall frame against a wall, being held by the neck and dangling a foot from the ground. Kol grinned like a cheshire cat and Burned grunted as Kol squeezed his neck tighter. "Perhaps not useless..." Kol raised his dagger to Burm's neck and nicked it. Black liquid seeped out of the wound, dripping down his throat. "I can still spill your blood..." He stuck his tongue out and leaned in to Burn's pale neck and licked the trail of blood off of his neck. "...and relish in it." Kol whispered.

Blood drained my face as my stomach felt queasy. My breathing becomes heavier and I shivered. Oh god... I just wanna leave...

Kol stopped.

Crap. Can he hear my rapid heartbeat? My heavy breathing?

He released Burn. Burn dropped to the ground, forgotten. Kol moved to the center of the storage room, directly under the lone light bulb that rendered daunting shadows on his beautiful face, making him look wicked. He searched around the room, his eyes slowly traveling over the boxes. I hunched myself over even more so.

Please don't see me, please don't see me, please don't see me–I prayed over and over.

Kol inhaled deeply, then he growled. "Nyx, I can't smell a fucking thing with the damn weed here." Kol's steel eyes glowered as he slithered closer to the boxes, to me.

The secret door opened once more and a head popped in. "General," The woman said. "Two male mers are fighting."

I sighed in relief of the disruption. Wait, mers are fighting?

Kol snarled. "Nobody can do a fucking thing around here." He snatched the door open. "You two, follow me." Kol left.

Shade exhaled. "That. Was. Hot!"

Burn shuddered. "Nyx, the way he grabbed me." He moaned. "Imagining him naked almost undid me."

What the hell?

I nearly pissed my damn shorts.

They chittered and giggled as they hurriedly followed Kol out. The door closed behind them. I waited a minute before I stood up. I groaned as my back popped back into place. "Jesus..." I muttered. Kol would've smelled me if it weren't for Shade's weed. Who would've thought—that weed saved my life.

Wasting no minute, I scampered to the door and quickly snuck out. I closed the door behind me. Luckily, crowds surrounded me, marking me invisible. I take out my phone to grasp it in my hand, ensuring that I was holding it when I leave from here. I realized that the crowd was murmuring and gasping. People stay rooted in their spots and they were staring at something. I followed the line of the crowd gazes.

They were all focused on two mers beating the crap out of each other.

I blinked rapidly.

Tristen?

Tristen was sporting a split lip and I looked at the other mer.

It was Gale–with a very painful looking shiner. Gale drew back to punch, Tristen dodged expertly and returned a fist to Gale's face.

I gaped at them and—

Someone roughly pushed me aside–or tried to with their small frame on my tall frame. I barked. "Hey—" But my voice died when I saw who it was. Shade hissed in my direction and continued walking. She slipped into the storage room once again. I shuddered. Had I waste another minute there, I would've been caught. I turned my attention back to the guys.

As soon as Tristen saw me. He sighed in relief, bubbles trailing from his lips. Gale stopped when Tristen was no longer fighting him. Gale followed Tristen's line of sight, spotting and he exhaled. Gale nodded his head towards the door. Leave. I nodded my thanks to them and made my way out. I hope they'll be okay. I sidestepped the crowd, making my way out of the mer dome.

Pain lanced through out my back. My scream gets caught in my throat. I fell to my knees and my breath came out labored as fire licked up spine. My eyes burned with tears.

What the hell?

Somebody screamed.

Then I heard it.

The crowd was gasping and shouting. I clumsily climbed to my feet–my pain forgotten. Tristen was keeled over as a long spear hovered over him. Shade was standing at the opening of the aquarium, holding a spear with a deadly point that was long enough to be poised over Tristen. Blue liquid spilled from Tristen's back. Shade grinned madly and aimed to stab him again. My cry gurgled in my throat as I stared in horror as Tristen braced himself for the spear.

Gale threw himself over Tristen and the spear stabbed Gale in the back. Gale hissed in pain, but he didn't flinch. Like Tristen, blue liquid fumed from his back. Gale growled and turned to wrench the spear from Shade. The spear sunk to the bottom of the aquarium. Shade twisted her face with such malice that she did not look one bit human. Tristen raised his eyes and looks straight to me. Run! He mouthed. I wiped my tears and turned to run for the exit–into the light of day.
