ZADE âSo, what do you know?â Lask, throwing down some photographs of the Arkan ! have managed to find and kill She sits back in her seat, her pale platinum hair which has a Hinge of violet covers one eye as she smokes her cigarette âMoney first, handsome âNot until I have the information I was promised Adriana.â I answer quietly She looks up at me almost suspiciously.
âI need the money⦠I canât afford to be tricked again.â Thereâs a strain in her voice now and I wonder what exactly happened that she doesnât trust me, even though I have always paid.
âI know and I need answers⦠Pine,â I concede coldly, reaching into my por ket and taking out the wad of cash, tossing it onto the table in front of her. She instantly sits forward and grabs it, her heart racing.
Whatever her issue is, she clearly needs the money.
âIf I donât get the answers⦠I wonât only take the money back, I will take your hand.â I warn, my eye flashing. She pauses from where she was flipping through the wad, her hands trembling. Sheâs in no state to fight, I could handle her with my eye closed.
âI will tell you everything I know.â Thereâs a glimmer of fear in her eyes, one Iâve not seen in them since she watched me being punished for disobeying themâ
âI donât have all day,â I add coldly, She nods quickly as she stands up and takes out a small drive from her pocket. â Here. Itâs everything I got and maybe a bit more than I promised. I want them gone too. Can you do it?â
I take it from her and motion for her to turn on the laptop that sits on the table.
âIâll try. What are you hiding?â I ask, motioning for her to sit down just in case she tries to run.
Sheâs small, but sheâs fucking fast.
Her hands tremble slightly as she opens the laptop. âThey came for me and my sister.â Her lips quiver and I observe her intently. âSheâs dying⦠and because we refused to be chipped⦠we canât even go to anyone for help. Not that I need it.
The defiance is back, but itâs obvious itâs just a front.
They may have been part of the Sable by force or by will, but they were still people I knew and someliow, I felt responsible for her and needed to help her.
Valerie.
My heart skips a beat, and she looks at me sharply. âWow⦠I donât think Iâve ever heard a change in your heartbeat. Ever.â
âWhere is Ada?â I ask, ignoring her.
âLike Iâll tell you,â she scoffs.
I clench my jaw, watching the laptop turn on, damn slow.
âI might know someone who might be able to help her,â I admit..
âYou?â she cocks a brow, turning towards me and sitting back in her seat as I slide the memory stick in.
âYeah, sheâs a doctor,â I reply.
Her eyebrows go higher. âOh yeah? Who is she to you?â
âMy woman,â I answer, looking her square in the eye.
Her eyes grow even wider before she smirks. âYou? You have a woman?â She laughs, but seeing me stare at her, she shuts up pretty fast. âDamn.. congratulations. Iâm glad you got your life on track⦠I thought you died with Gaultier until you showed up a year ago.â
We fall silent, and I open the first folder, refusing to talk about the past.
âSo, whatâs she like? Anyone I know?â
âNo. But sheâs smart and hot.â Itâs strange to talk like this, to people who think I in comparison to those who donât think I deserve her.
deserve to have a liâ
âIâm sure she is,â she smirks. âIâm happy for you, boss. You deserve happiness⦠because you surrendered, we were able to live⦠I really thought weâd die that night.â
She was one of the ones who survived the explosion in the tunnels. There are marks left. Her arms are both covered with some scars from the burns, burns that never healed thanks to the poison that was in them.
Fucking Sebastian King.
âWe lost a lot either way,â I mutter as I scan the images in the drive.
Fuck she did better than I thought, there are photographs of at least thirty people in here, mainly men.
Along with information on their backgrounds. âThose are all part of the Arkan.â
âHeâs dead.â I point to the one who tried to attack Valerie in her apartment.
âThank goddess for that.â
Thank me more like.
âLooks good enough,â I say, removing the memory stick. âThe full amount as promised is there, but if you do need help and want my girl to look at her, Iâm sure sheâll be happy to. Give me a call.â
Opening a Word file, I type my number and step back.
Sheâs observing me intently before she nods, but when I take a few steps, ready to get out of there, she speaks up.
âI wish you didnât leave⦠I wish you were there for us all. Matt had faith in you. He said youâd take your place as Alpha for us all. Give us a home. I mean weâll pull our weight but we need our Alpha to step up.â I pause, before glancing back at her, her eye that I can see is glimmering with unshed tears before she looks away, crushing her cigarette. âIâll see you around.â She adds.
