Sorry for the late chapter, I fell asleep.
The Liberation Army member, who told the whole truth, was soon taken away by the police called by Passius.
Left behind, Rudger and Passius pondered the Liberation Army agentâs words from earlier.
âI knew there was something underground, but to say they were working with a warlock is pretty troubling.â
âHe didnât seem to be lying, he also didnât have a high rank either so he didnât know much.â
âHe said he was a third-level informant.â
âYes.â
Passius nodded.
The Liberation Army operative had said he was a third-level informant, someone who moved in stealth and kept the army informed about the outside world changes, a tail that could be cut off and as it turned out, he didnât know that much.
Rudger thought it was funny.
âThey say they want a world where everyone is equal, but theyâre the ones whoâre grading and discriminating.â
Passius laughed bitterly at that.
âTheyâre just like the aristocrats they hate.â
âIn a way, theyâve become their equal, ironically enough.â
âBut joining forces with a warlock certainly crossed the line.â
âIt may have been because their power was not enough.â
âThe Liberation Army isnât that underpowered either, they have some high ranking people in their midst.â
âBut now theyâve added black wizards to those executives.â
âSort of.â
Even as he said that, Passius couldnât help but notice Rudgerâs eyes on him.
âWhy are you looking at me like that?â
âWhat? Oh, itâs becauseâ¦â¦.â
âIs it because of what the Liberation Army agent just said?â
Passius recalled the words of the captured agent from earlier.
He had said that the Liberation Army was working with the black wizards and that they were up to something underground.
If that was all heâd said, it wouldnât have bothered him. It was the other information he said that bothered them.
-Theon, thereâs an agent of ours hiding among the students of Theon! I was supposed to contact him!
The desperate words of the Liberation Army agent fueled Passiusâs worry.
âDonât read too much into it. Heâs probably just trying to sway us with lies on purpose.â
âYou donât have to console me. He was sincere and heâs not the kind of person whose head would spin enough to deceive us with false information in a situation like that.â
ââ¦â¦Mr. Rudger.â
âCome to think of it, it would be rather odd if someone wasnât infiltrated.â
Rudger said and turned to leave while Passius followed casually at his side.
ââ¦â¦What are you going to do about it?â
âThe studentsâ lives are at stake so Iâll handle it accordingly.â
âAre you sure youâre okay with that?â
âI donât understand the intent of your question.â
âYouâre a teacher, arenât you?â
âA superficial title that can be changed at any time.ân/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
ââ¦â¦.â
When Rudger said it so forcefully, even Passius couldnât argue further.
âI see, so our first priority is to find the student.â
âIf theyâre right, heâs a first-rate intelligence officer, so he should know a lot.â
Rudger and Passius were back out on the main street by then.
âMr. Rudger!â
A familiar voice spotted them and shouted.
In the distance, Aidan was running toward Rudger.
âAidan?â
Where did he leave his mentor, Caroline Monarch?
Judging by the way he came running this way, it was no accident.
âHeâs not alone.â
Aidan was with his best friend Leo, who was often with him. Did he come here to ask you something?
Rudger narrowed his eyes as he thought so.
Aidan and Leoâs expressions were somewhat serious unlike usual. Obviously, Aidanâs expression, which was bright before he left, now seemed full of urgency.
âWait, the students are looking for me.â
âYes, go ahead.â
With a nod to Passius, Rudger approached Aidan.
Rudger stopped in front of him and stared at Leo and Aidan, who gasped for breath.
âAidan, Leo, what are you doing here? Why are you not with your mentor and why are you calling my name so loudly on the street. Donât you guys have any shame at all?â
In fact, the two students acted arbitrarily in a serious situation, so it was impossible for Rudger to say good things.
Had it been the usual Aidan, he would have smiled awkwardly and said sorry but now it was different.
âThatâsâ¦â¦I thought I had to tell Mr. Rudger.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âItâs about Leo.â
Rudgerâs sharp gaze fell on Leo. The normally stoic boy looked terrified now.
He didnât try to show it, but the way his clenched fists trembled gave it away.
Rudger suddenly remembered the words of the Liberation Army agent from earlier.
âNo way.â
Pushing the disturbing thought from his mind, Rudger asked.
âTell me everything that happened.â
âLeo.â
Aidan called Leoâs name but Leo hesitated for a long moment. He wasnât sure if he should speak, then a hand rested on his shoulder.
Leo stared at Aidan wordlessly.
One look into Aidanâs steady eyes and Leo made a decision.
âItâsâ¦â¦.â
Leo told Rudger the truth.
* * *
About an hour ago Aidan looked at Leo and asked.
âAre you okay?â
âYouâ¦â¦.â
Leo didnât know what Aidan meant by his question so he was dumbfounded. No, more than that, he was angry.
âAre youâ¦â¦asking me if Iâm okay because you donât know whatâs going on right now?â
âLeoâ¦â¦.â
âIâm with the Liberation Army.â
With nothing to hide, Leo told Aidan his identity.
âIâve been told that thereâs going to be a major terrorist and Iâve been instructed to expose the students to that threat directly. Do you understand? The guy you thought was your friend all this time was actually a liar and an international terrorist.â
âLeo.â
âDonât call me by that name!â
Leo shouted, unable to control himself. It was not like Leo to lose his cool under any circumstances. Or to put it another way, Leo was pushed to the breaking point to show such emotion.
âYouâre looking at me like youâre worried about something! Youâre supposed to be running outside to report me right now! What happened to your head?â
Leoâs voice was mournful, as if he were releasing every ounce of his frustration.
âI lied to you, Tracy, Iona, all of them, and you still think of me as a friend!â
Leo wished Aidan would just call him names. He would have felt better if he could have grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and slapped him but Aidan listened in silence.
It made Leoâs heart sink.
âHa. Ha.â
Leo gasped for air after venting his anger for so long. He didnât even have the strength left to do anything.
ââ¦..Idiot. Thereâs no point in staying here, itâs all over.â
âItâs not over.â
Aidanâs words made Leo stare at him like he didnât know what the hell this idiot was talking about.
âLeo, you werenât going to listen to those Liberation Army people.â
ââ¦â¦whatever.â
âIâm sorry I eavesdropped, and I know you had no choice, which is to be expected when your family is being held hostage, but you still tried to resist.â
âWhatâs the point? Itâs already over!â
âThe attack hasnât happened yet, and you have the information to stop it.â
Leo met Aidanâs eyes. Aidanâs eyes never wavered, as if his words werenât simply meant to encourage him.
Aidan genuinely believed he could stop this now.
âYouâ¦â¦.â
âI need to tell them.â
âTo who? Do you think theyâd believe us if we said anything, since weâre just students in the first place?â
âWe need to tell someone who will believe us.â
âAnd who is that?â
âMr. Rudger.â
ââ¦â¦.â
Leoâs face crumpled in disbelief.
âAre you crazy, Rudger Chelici, do you think heâs going to believe us?â
âWhy do you think he isnât?â
âBecause of his personality, he will rather catch me and put me in prison. Thatâs what all people who weigh principles are like!â
âNo. Mr. Rudger wouldnât do that.â
âHow do you know?â
âThen who else is there besides Mr. Rudger? Is there a suitable person?â
ââ¦â¦.â
Leo didnât have a good answer.
Even if he told a regular teacher, there was no guarantee that what he said on their behalf would ring true to anyone else.
But Rudger was different. He had recently risen to prominence in the Arcane Chamber and he was also a person who paid attention to mentors who participated in this field trip.
âLeo, you have to decide.â
ââ¦â¦Itâs too late.â
âNo, itâs not too late. It can be turned around, depending on what you do.â
âWhat can I do on my own?â
âIâll help you.â
Aidan replied without hesitation.
âWhat?â
âIâll help you.â
ââ¦â¦ Are you insane? Donât you realize youâre in danger if you get involved with me? You could be arrested as an accomplice!â
âWeâll have to make sure that doesnât happen, wonât we?â
ââ¦â¦.â
Aidanâs sarcastic tone left Leo speechless.
After pursing his lips for a moment, Leoâs shoulders drooped in a half-given-up manner. But even so, a faint smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
âSeriously, youâre the biggest idiot â¦â¦ Iâve ever seen in my entire life.â
âThanks for the compliment.â
* * *
Leo told Rudger the whole truth. How he ended up in the Liberation Army and what theyâre trying to do in the capital. To be honest, he thought they were crazy.
As he talked with Rudger, there were several times when Leo wondered if he should do this but in the end, he told him everything and when he was done, he felt an indescribable sense of relief.
After Leo finished, Rudger stared at him wordlessly for a while. That reticent gaze weighed heavily on Leo, and it frightened him.
How long did the suffocating moment last?
Rudger opened his mouth.
âLeo, if what youâre saying is true, your family is being held hostage, your sister and mother.â
The first words out of Rudgerâs mouth were neither anger nor rebuke, but confirmation.
ââ¦â¦Yes.â
âAnd you had no choice but to obey their orders.â
âYes.â
âBut that doesnât take away the sinfulness of what you did because you did, in fact, stole information from Theon.â
ââ¦â¦Youâre all right.â
Leo knew there was no point in making excuses, so he humbly accepted the truth.
âAnd yet you came to me, to try to resolve this situation somehow.â
ââ¦â¦Yes.â
Leo thought of his family. Then he thought of the friends heâd made in Theon, and the memories heâd made.
Either was so precious that it was hard to give up. However, if he chose one, he had no choice but to let go of the other.
âThen Iâll have to save your family first.â
Rudger said.
âWhat?â
Leo didnât understand for a moment and asked.
âWhy?â
âThat, thatâsâ¦â¦my family is nowâ¦â¦.â
âWe have to save them. You said they were being held hostage.â
âYeah. I did, butâ¦â¦why?â
Leo couldnât help but ask.
Itâs Leoâs family thatâs being held hostage, not Rudgerâs family. To be honest, Rudger wasnât even remotely responsible for saving Leoâs family. Still, he said he would.
âLeo, who am I?â
âYou are Mr. Rudger Chelici.â
âYes. Is it so wrong when a teacher says he will help a student?â
ââ¦â¦.â
Leo has already been speechless twice today.
Rudgerâs words made sense. He is a teacher so he helps students. It was obvious. It was also the right thing to say but people didnât do the obvious.
Leo had no doubt that the man in front of him would do the same.
He knew heâd done great things, and he knew there was something about him that set him apart from other teachers. He figured Rudger was just like everyone else in that regard.
âLeo.â
ââ¦â¦Yes.â
âFor this moment, all you have to do is say thank you.â
Leo felt something stirring inside him and bowed his head deeply. Maybe he knew the truth. That it was his own narrow-mindedness that wouldnât help anyone. He just didnât want to admit it.
To admit that there are people in this world who are stupidly good or who do their part would mean that he was wrong, that he had been laughing at everything.
Wasnât that funny?
He said no one will help him, but inside he was desperate for help. What is more contradictory than this?
He said with his own mouth that he should think about everything rationally and calmly.
Wouldnât it be embarrassing if he said that and got it wrong?
Like Aidan, who offers to help, or Rudger, who listens to the situation and says he understands.
âI canât believe Iâm with these fools but Iâm such a fool, too.â
And Leo didnât hate himself for being in the company of such fools.
Tears streamed down Leoâs face as he bowed his head.
âThank you, really, thank you.â
It was the first tear of a boy who had vowed never to shed a tear, no matter what shed.
