Ch13: Who's The Sour Puss Now?
Day 75
I wake up to the second worst day ever.
My birthday.
That's right. I'm officially twenty-four and I couldn't care less.
Although thinking of if better today can be both the best day and the worst day at the same time.
The best day because today me and Sam met at a small bakery exactly seven years ago. I was seventeen and he was twenty.
*
My birthday's today and I can't believe I'm turning seventeen. Just one more year before I'm officially an adult.
"Just tell me where you want to go," my driver says politely. His name's William and he's amazing. Will pretends to be all business, but I know he's a giant teddy bear hidding under a suit.
"Take me to Tina's bakery in Fidel street please," I smile hoping he won't question my doings.
"Your mother would disapprove of such a place," Will frowns and I smirk.
"My mother isn't here Will," I say and I see him smile amused before turning on the ignition and beginning to drive.
~~~
"Thank you Will," I hug him and I feel his body go rigid, but he relaxes after a few seconds.
"Anytime Miss," he nods and I roll my eyes at him.
"Don't call me miss," I frown "it makes me feel old."
"Sorry Miss," he shakes his head "but I would feel uncomfortable calling you anything else. I know my place."
I hate that comment.
I know my place.
My mother always tell me to know my place which she claims is above the staff, but I think otherwise.
"We're all in the same place here Will," I frown even more "and money doesn't make me or anyone else above you. Please always remember that when talking to me."
"I will," he smiles, a wide grin and it's the first time I've seen him do so around me. He seems to catch my amusement and immediately returns to his all business maneuver.
"Be back in a few," I tell him before walking into the Tina's bakery. Everything smells delicious and I see all the different shapes and flavored cakes in display.
"Can I help you?" an older women stands behind the glass counter holding the cakes.
"Yes," I smile "I would like a chocolate cookies and cream cake please."
"Of course," she nods making her way into a room somewhere in the back.
"Nice choice," someone says and I turn around to see a cop. He's tall, like six feet tall with short messy brown hair and kind bright brown eyes.
"It's my favorite," I say "my grandpa use to buy it all the time for me when I was little."
"Is it your birthday?" He asks gesturing for my to sit with him and I look out the window. Will is distracted talking on the phone with someone.
"It is," I sit down in front of him.
"Well, Happy birthday. I would sing to you, but I don't know your name which is...." he says not finishing his sentence waiting for me to fill in the blank.
"Smooth move," I smirk "how many times have you tried that?"
"Once," he smiles, a charming smile with all teeth showing that would give any girl a heart attack.
"Did it work?" I ask.
"No," he answers "because she hasn't told me her name."
Me?
"Miss your cake is here," the older women announces and I stand up going over to get my cake. Paying the amount asked for I make my way towards the door and I can see Will looking at me.
Did he see me sitting down with the cop?
"Sam," the man yells out "my name is Sam."
"I'll see you around...Sam," I smile before walking out.
*
And I did see him around. The next day I went back to the bakery hoping to find him and I did.
I told him my name and he talked to me about his job. He was a regular city cop then. At first I thought I had a crush on him, he was a good looking cop, but I realized as time went by that I wanted us to just be friends.
I miss those days.
Getting up from my bed I decide its best if I leave these thoughts behind me.
No more thinking about the old days. Today is just another regular unimportant day.
I put on some light colored jeans with a long dark purple knitted sweater and some black boots. Then I brush my hair and let it fall freely before putting on some natrual make-up.
I look like I do any other day.
Taking a deep breath I walk out of my room and see Elliot sitting on the table shirtless.
God he's gorgeous.
Control yourself Lydia!
After he told me that he was completely single I thought the old kind Elliot would be back, but I was wrong. The next day he went back to being the cold, rude, obnoxious Elliot that I hate.
"Hey," I say as I make my way towards the fridge.
"Some package arrived for you," Elliot tells me pointing at the couch.
A small brown cardboard box is there with my name written on it in black marker. It looks homemade with tape being the only thing holding it together.
"Who brought it?" I ask rushing towards the couch.
"No one," he says uninterested "when I opened the door to go jogging it was already there."
"Okay," I answer quickly grabbing the box and running into my room. I stare at it wondering if I should open it.
What if its dangerous?
Shaking my head I open the box and inside theres a necklace with a pendant. My father's old pendant, the letter A for Acel. Taking out the necklace I see a note;
Dear Big Sister,
I know I have done nothing, but gained your distrust. I will prove to you that I am truly sorry for my actions and hope that one day you can forgive me. I know our father decided to give me his pendant, but I belive you deserve it more considering you're the one he'd be most proud of if he were alive. Once again I'm sorry and happy twenty-fourth birthday.
-N
Nathan sent me this.
Could this mean he's truly sorry?
I grab the necklace and look at it. Last time I saw it my dad was wearing it around his neck.
The necklace is beautiful, a long pure silver chain with a cicular charm where the A is engraved in cursive.
We all have our own pendants, but I lost mine...well I had mine confiscated.
Pushing those thoughts aside I put my dad's pendant around my neck and hide it beneath my clothes.
Suddenly I hear my disposable phone ring and I know its Sam.
"Hello," I answer it.
"Hey," Sam says "meet me in the alley in ten minutes."
"Okay," I reply confused "why?"
"I have a suprise," he answers and I know he's grinning.
"Fine," I hang up.
***
I make my way towards the alley nervous.
Me and Sam haven't celebrated my birthday or his for two years now.
Why this year?
"Lydia," Sam yells out as soon as he spots me. He's casually leaning against the wall his hands behind his back.
"Sammy," I smile leaning against the wall beside him.
"Close your eyes," he grins and it's the first time in a long time that I see him so happy. I want to say no because I hate surprises, but hearing and seeing him so happy makes me comply.
"What is it?" I asks closing my eyes. He doesn't answer, but rather puts a heavy cardboard box in my hands.
"Open them," he commands and I do. I look down at my hands and I see a closed bright pink box labeled chocolate cookies and cream.
"You bought me cake," I smile and he nods opening the box for me.
"Your favorite cake," Sam says smiling.
"You remembered?" I ask incredulously.
"How could I not?" he asks "a beautiful caring girl walks into a bakery and orders diabetes in a box then denies me the honor of knowing her name. I don't think anyone would forget."
"Thank you," I wrap my arms around him carefully trying not to drop the cake.
"Anything for you shorty," he says genuinely. I pull away expecting him to say something, but instead I get a handful of cake in my face.
"You just declared war," I laugh licking the cake off my face.
"That's only if you catch me," he sticks his tounge out at me and runs. Taking this as a challenge I run after him.
We're being childish, I know, but I don't care. For the first time in three years I'm laughing like there's no tomorrow, running like I have somewhere to go, and enjoying myself like nothing else matters.
***
With a stupidly huge smile on my face I walk into my apartment.
Today has officially been one the best days I've had in a long time and all thanks to Sam.
I love Sammy. He's the only person in this world I'd die for.
"Where were you?" A bitter guy asks, but I'm in too good of a mood to fight.
"Out," I grin unable to hide my happiness. For the time instead of hidding my emotions I feel the need to express them.
Well, most of my emotions anyways.
"What's got you all smiley?" he asks a disgusted look on his face.
Who's the sour puss now?
"Nothing," I take a deep breath "I had a good day. What about you?"
Am I seriously interested in hearing about his day? Not really, but I asked so I might as well listen.
"Terrible," he frowns "this lady yelled at me because we ran out of ketchup and I was on bathroom duty."
"Poor you," I go and sit next to him in the couch "maybe if we watch a movie you'll get in a better mood."
"Okay," he gives me a strange look "what happened? You're seriously scaring me."
He looks so cute when he scrunches his eyebrows together forming a small V shaped wrinkle between them.
"Why, because I'm in a good mood?"
"Yeah," he says and I roll my eyes.
"I can't help it," I smile "I had a great day."
"I didn't," he complains.
"I have an idea on how to lift your mood," I say.
"Me too," he answers and before I can say anything his lips are on mine.
This was defiantly not what I had in mind...
