2 Months later...

Adrian's P.O.V. (Surprise)

Chapter Two

Adrian's POV

It had been a month since I last saw Susan. Right now, I was in New Jersey, stuck dealing with company issues alongside my buddy Chen. We'd been working nonstop, trying to sort things out, but all I could think about was getting back to New York. Back to her.

I missed her more than I wanted to admit. And if I knew Susan, she probably missed me too. But she'd never say it outright—she wasn't the type. She had this effortless way of holding back, keeping her emotions in check, while I... I wasn't always so composed.

I still remembered the first time I met her. She was just sixteen, standing off to the side at my friend's party while her best friend was busy with her boyfriend. Most of the other girls had either drifted to the dance floor or were getting drunk with random guys, but not her. Not Susan. It wasn't that she wasn't asked—she was. But no one dared to push too far. The reason? Ryan Adams.

Ryan was the school's most popular jerk, and he had an obsessive crush on Susan. Everyone knew it, and no one wanted to get on his bad side. He wasn't at the party that night, but his shadow loomed over Susan like an unspoken warning. And yet, she didn't seem to care. She wasn't oblivious—she was just too composed to let it affect her.

I spotted her standing with a group of girls who eventually made their way to the dance floor, leaving her alone. She had a presence that was hard to ignore—elegant, poised, and completely in control. She wasn't drinking, and she wasn't interested in dancing with just anyone. That intrigued me.

I walked up to her, hands in my pockets. "Hey, you're Lisa's friend, right?"

She turned, her brown eyes sharp but curious. "Yeah. So?"

I smirked. "So, I was trying to start a conversation. I'm Adrian."

She studied me for a second before shaking my hand. "I know who you are. I'm Susan."

"I know who you are too." I leaned against the table beside her. "I didn't know you had such a dedicated fan club."

Her lips curled slightly. " What do you mean?"

I chuckled. "Ryan and half the school, apparently."

She exhaled softly, unimpressed. "That's not really my concern."

"No?"

She tilted her head, amusement flickering in her gaze. "Why would I waste my time thinking about something so meaningless?"

I grinned. "You've got an entire fan club, you know. Ryan's just the president."

She laughed, shaking her head. "Well, I didn't sign up for it."

I smirked. "Yeah, but they're still holding meetings."

"Then they're wasting their time," she said simply. "I decide who I give my attention to."

I didn't have a response to that—because she was right.

As we were walking she randomly asked me "Can I trust you with me address?"

"You already did" I replied.

By the time we reached her home, I realized just how different our worlds were. The massive iron gates loomed ahead, and as we approached, the guards stationed at the watchtower above spotted her. Without hesitation, the gates swung open instantly, like she was royalty returning home.

I exhaled, impressed but not surprised. Susan carried herself like she was untouchable, and the world treated her accordingly.

She turned to me before stepping inside. "Goodnight, Adrian."

I smiled. "Goodnight, Susan."

With that, she disappeared behind the gates, leaving me standing there with the lingering warmth of her presence.

Now, sitting in my hotel room in New Jersey, I sighed, dragging a hand through my hair. I wanted to call her, just to hear her voice, but I didn't. Instead, I went out for coffee, hoping a change of scenery would help clear my mind.

That's when I ran into Sia.

She spotted me first, her lips curling into a knowing smile as she walked over to my table. "Well, well, look who it is."

I exhaled slowly, placing my coffee down. "Didn't expect to run into you here."

"Neither did I." She slid into the seat across from me, casually stirring her drink. "So, what brings you to Jersey?"

"Work. What are you doing here?"

She raised a brow. "That's great, I live here with my boyfriend. You are here for just work ?"

I gave a noncommittal shrug, not particularly interested in indulging her curiosity. Sia had a way of prying, of pushing buttons just to see how people reacted.

"You look different," she mused, tilting her head. "Settled."

I smirked. "That a bad thing?"

"Not at all. Just surprising. You used to be more... restless."

I didn't respond, letting the silence hang between us. She watched me for a moment before leaning back.

"You know, I always thought you'd get bored of the whole commitment thing. But I guess Susan keeps you on your toes."

I just chuckled lightly. "She does."

Her eyes flickered with something unreadable before she let out a soft laugh. "Lucky woman."

"Lucky me," I corrected, standing up. "Good seeing you, Sia."

I left the coffee shop without another word. I didn't tell Susan about it. Not because it was anything important, but because I knew she'd get paranoid. And when Susan was jealous, she didn't lash out. She just distanced herself, acting like she didn't care at all.

But I knew better.

Like when Susan first joined the company. Corey had taken an immediate interest in her. He wasn't just impressed by her work ethic—though she was damn good at what she did—he liked her. I could see it in the way he lingered around her desk, always finding excuses to chat. But Susan, in her usual elegant way, always steered the conversations away before they became anything more.

At first, I convinced myself it wasn't worth my attention. But that didn't mean I enjoyed watching him try. So one day, I called him into my office.

Corey stepped in, looking relaxed, though there was a flicker of curiosity in his eyes. "You wanted to see me?"

I leaned back in my chair, studying him. "Yeah. Have a seat."

"I've noticed you've been spending a lot of time around Susan."

He blinked, then shrugged. "She's a great colleague. Talented. Easy to talk to."

"I bet," I said. "You know if she's seeing anyone?"

Corey hesitated. "I—uh—assumed she wasn't."

I nodded slowly. "That's interesting. Because Susan doesn't entertain attention she doesn't want. So either you're missing the signals, or you think you've got a shot despite them."

Corey's posture stiffened. "Look, Adrian, I didn't mean any—"

"Relax. I just figured I'd clear something up. Susan is important to me. Now you know. Act accordingly."

He nodded quickly. "Got it. Won't happen again."

A few days later, Susan knocked on my office door. "Got a minute?"

"For you? Always."

"Did you say something to Corey? He's avoiding me."

I smirked. "Is that a bad thing?"

She sighed. "Adrian."

"I just made sure he understood where things stood."

She smiled knowingly. "You get jealous too easily."

I chuckled. "And you don't get jealous at all."

She smiled before turning toward the door. "Thanks for looking out for me. Even if you didn't have to." That's the thing about Susan she just don't spend energy over something she can't change. And she doesn't trust easily also.

I guess it's cause of Ryan but she's over it. I wish I could go back and stop her or didn't create suspense on the date of my arrival in past, then nothing could have happened that day. She always says it's all her fault, but I know it's not.

But we can't change our past... I wish I could change the past for once.
