Chapter 4 Who Am I to You?
Colette left when Peyton was 8 years old. It was Kasonâs birthday that day, and Peyton happily
returned home, ready to celebrate her fatherâs birthday. But she was greeted with a divorce agreement
from her parents.
In order to catch up with Colette, Peyton stumbled down the stairs, losing her shoes without even
noticing. She clung onto Coletteâs leg and cried desperately, âMom, donât go!â
Colette caressed Peytonâs tender cheek and said, âIâm sorry.â
âMom, I topped the class this time. You havenât even seen my exam paper yet. It needs to be signed by
parents.
âMom, please donât leave me. Iâll be good. I promise I wonât go to the amusement park anymore, and I
wonât make you angry again. Iâll listen to you. Pleaseâ¦â
Peyton expressed her reluctance to separate from her mom in a
panicked manner, hoping Colette would stay. But Colette simply told Peyton that her marriage with
Peytonâs father was not happy and that she had now found true happiness.
Peyton saw a stranger man putting Coletteâs luggage into a car, and then they left hand in hand.
Peyton chased after them barefoot for hundreds of meters until she fell heavily on the ground. Her
knees and soles of her feet were scratched. Peyton watched the car that she could never catch up
drive away.
At that time, Peyton didnât understand. It wasnât until she grew up that she realized her mother had an
affair and was discovered by her father,
so her mother decided to divorce and gave up everything, including her.
For more than a decade, there was no contact between Peyton and her mother, fueling Peytonâs deep
hatred. She once wished to never see Colette again in her lifetime.
Fate was truly ironic. In the end, Peyton had to plead with Colette.
Peytonâs throat felt choked, and she stood there motionless. Colette knew Peytonâs thoughts and pulled
Peyton over to sit beside her.
âI know you hate me, but you were too young back then. Many things. werenât as you imagined, and I
couldnât explain it to you.â
Colette reached out to touch Peytonâs face. âYou have grown up. Sweetheart, I will settle back in our
home country this time. I know the Schmitt family has encountered some troubles, but itâs fine. I will
take care of you.â
Then Peyton realized that her so-called hatred was insignificant while facing her mother. She choked
out, âMom.â
âGood girl, stay and have a meal. These years, Elbert has been very good to me. His daughter is two
years older than you. She and her fiancé will come over for dinner. I will introduce you to them.â
Peyton had no intention of blending into Coletteâs new family, so she quickly interrupted, âMom, Iâm
here because of Dad. You know the Schmitt family went bankrupt, and now Dadâs heart disease has
worsened. I canât afford the surgery. Can you please help me? I promise Iâll pay you back.â
Before Colette could answer, a familiar voice rang out. âMs. Schmitt, it seems you are in desperate
need of money. You even come to my place to ask for it.â
Upon hearing the voice, Peyton was completely shocked. She couldnât. believe her eyes as she looked
at the ones appearing at the door. They were Helena and Nolan.
Fate played another joke on her. Peyton never expected her mother to become Helenaâs stepmother!
Peytonâs husband and mother became Helenaâs family.
It just happened that Helena and Nolan caught Peyton asking her mother for money.
Peytonâs uneasy demeanor fell into Nolanâs eyes, but he just quietly watched, without any other
reaction.
âBoohooâ¦â
The crying of a baby broke the awkward atmosphere. It was only now that Peyton noticed the twin baby
stroller being pushed by a maid.
In the first moment when the baby cried, Nolan skillfully picked up one of them and comforted him.
The heartwarming picture of the family of four fell into Peytonâs sight. She couldnât express how upset
she was. If her child were still alive, he would have been at the same age.
Peyton began to regret why she came here. She felt like she was nailed. to a pillar of shame and being
ripped apart by everyone.
Strangely, no matter how Nolan tried to comfort the baby today, the crying wouldnât stop. The nanny
hurriedly brought over some milk, but the baby cried even louder.
Nolan patiently tried to calm the baby down, saying, âBaby, donât cry.â
Tall as Nolan was, when he held the tiny baby in his arms, the scene

seemed particularly cozy. Seeing his gentle and patient look, Peyton suddenly had a thought.
Peyton took a few steps forward and stood in front of Nolan before snatching the baby. Strangely,
Nolan didnât stop Peyton. And what was stranger, the moment the baby was in Peytonâs arms, he
stopped crying and smiled instead.
The almost one-year-old baby had distinctively outlined features, with pink and tender lips. He let out a
giggle, mixed with some unclear syllables.
The babyâs fair little hand reached out to grab the bobble on Peytonâs hat, and his smiling face was a
spitting image of Nolan.
Peytonâs heart seemed to be ruthlessly stabbed by a knife, shattering her last bit of resilience.
Peyton once naively believed that Nolan loved her, and in their first year of marriage, he had been
really good to her.
At midnight, Nolan would whisper in Peytonâs ear, âPeytie, I want a baby with you.â
How could Peyton refuse what Nolan wanted? Even though she hadnât graduated yet, she got pregnant
without hesitation.
Peyton finally realized that when they were together, every time Nolan. went on a business trip abroad,
he was with another woman.
Peytonâs stomach churned. She threw the baby at Nolan and ran into the bathroom before locking the
door without looking back.
Peyton didnât eat much, so she only vomited blood. The large patches of red blood stung her.
Peyton couldnât help but cry. Yes, it was really good.
Their marriage had been a joke from the beginning!
Peyton finally figured out what she couldnât understand before. It turned out everything had clues.
Why didnât Nolan hesitate to save Helena when they both fell into the water? Why did he stay with
Helena when she gave birth prematurely? It turned out Helena was pregnant with Nolanâs child at that
time!
After a while, there was a knock on the door.
âPeytie, are you alright?â
Peyton tidied up and washed her face with clean water before stumbling out.
Colette didnât know about the entanglement between these people. She pulled Peyton worriedly and
asked, âPeytie, are you feeling unwell?â
âI feel better after throwing up when I see those two.â
âPeytic, do you know Helena? She has always been abroad. Is there any misunderstanding between
you two? This is Mr. Daltonâ¦â
Peyton coldly interrupted Colette, âI know. He is Nolan, the CEO of the Dalton Group. Everyone knows
him.â
âYes, Mr. Dalton is young and successful. He achieves so much at a young age.â
âOf course, Mr. Dalton is amazing. He is eager to get married without getting a divorce. Ordinary people
donât have his courage.â
It puzzled Colette. âPeytic, what are you talking about? Mr. Dalton hasnât married. Donât talk nonsense.â
Peyton gave a contemptuous smile. âIf he hasnât married, who am I
