On their way, the two of them barely spoke. Xu Qingyan was usually not much of a talker. They chatted intermittently, but no one mentioned what happened last night.
The year was about to end, and many things were hard to say and articulate.
Just before getting off the car, Xu Qingyan was originally returning empty-handed. Pei Muchan stopped him and handed him two shopping bags from the back seat, filled with thick new clothes.
âHuh?â He looked puzzled.
âI wandered around the store this afternoon and felt embarrassed not to buy anything.â Pei Muchan didnât explain much, the car key still in the ignition, she drove off as if fleeing the scene.
Xu Qingyan glanced at the clothes, thoughtful.
â¦.
The next day.
âWhoa, new clothes.â Gan Wenchang had just arrived at work when he spotted Xu Qingyan from afar, âThat coat looks sharp⦠and expensive, too. Whatâs up, did you find some money?â
âCanât I enjoy spending a little money?â He ignored Gan Wenchang.
âImpossible, Xu Baiwan is as tight-fisted as they come. Honestly, it would be surprising if you didnât make your buddy pop some grain for these clothes.â Gan Wenchang shook his head, sizing him up and down.
âAnd this sense of style⦠this brand, itâs not just irrelevant to you, itâs completely off. I think some girl bought these for you. Did you take a leave yesterday to go shopping?â
âEnough, stop spouting nonsense.â Xu Qingyan waved his hand, âOne piece of clothing, and you come up with all this weird stuff, you must be bored out of your mind.â
The two entered the office, filled their thermal cups with hot water, and then went for breakfast.
Gan Wenchang led Xu Qingyan out of the main building and turned left into a temporary canteen on the other side. This was the director groupâs private kitchen; in a few days, the production team would start ordering boxed meals.
The two still habitually talked as they ate. Having been together for two months, they had a combination of a business relationship and personal friendship, and they clicked well, making their relationship very close.
Someone greeted Gan Wenchang along the way, which surprised Xu Qingyan.
âSince when did you become so popular? The demon of the directorâs group?â
âWhat demon or whatever, donât talk nonsense.â Gan Wenchang waved his hand and, taking advantage of the moment when no one was around, raised his eyebrows and said, âMy dad made progress yesterday.â
Progress?
This tricky thing really was all about hoping the father would become a dragon. Xu Qingyan had a hundred horses racing through his heart.
âProgress? Where did our dad get transferred to?â
âPff, itâs none of your damn business, whippersnapper.â Gan Wenchang spat out, almost losing the fried dough stick in his hand, âDamn, youâre pretty flexible with your principles, huh?â
If Gan Wenchang didnât trust Xu Qingyan, he wouldnât have mentioned it at all.
âTsk, what do you think I am in your eyes, a saint?â
âThatâs true, weâre all just ordinary people.â Gan Wenchang sighed, âUsing my fatherâs name, I donât know how long it will last, at most a few decades.â
Xu Qingyan: ââ¦â
He wasnât particularly concerned about this; instead, he turned his attention to more practical matters. He didnât think about crossing over the year for now, but the schedule after crossing, which was in two days.
He had to ensure that the work was successfully completed and find a way forward for the film company.
Money, people, and resources all had to be in place after the New Year. He would definitely need to be on-site himself. He couldnât be the director or the producer.
But if he wanted to shoot according to his own ideas, he had to consider all aspects, including financial and manpower investments.
Seeking investment was unrealistic and unnecessary; Spring Festival qualifications werenât to be used like that. On his part, gathering funds wasnât a problem; if need be, he could just release a few more songs.
He had been planning to release songs after the Spring Festival anyway. The goal⦠was naturally to gather funds. Some songs could only be sung by him, and to be honest, releasing songs was quite grueling.
You canât switch styles too often or make them too difficult, otherwise, itâs a waste of time. To earn money from a song, one might have to invest half a month or even a month.
So, he stayed away from rock and rap.
As for other songs with a high difficulty coefficient⦠he would consider them if necessary. He might make the effort if it was really needed. Teaching hand by hand, recording line by line, thatâs how the song would come together.
But he actually didnât feel much for songs and had no dreams of becoming a singer. After all, it was just endlessly copying scores and singing them.@@novelbin@@
Being a screenwriter or director, though also about adapting, was different. With thousands of films in his mind, he had a certain aesthetic sense and could make revisions.
Without changing the main direction or just fixing bugs, or maybe altering a small detail. This could be considered the pleasure of a minor creation, a kind of exhilarating feeling of being a creator.
âAre you saying you started a film company?â Gan Wenchang looked up, picking out the key information from his words, surprised, âFor real?â
âJust dabbling and testing the waters, I decided to go for it since I felt like it.â Xu Qingyan replied without looking up.
âBut this kind of venture burns through cash. Are you planning to make movies?â Gan Wenchang scratched his head, swallowing the tail end of his fried dough stick, âBe careful not to go bust.â
âNot making movies, just small-budget comedies.â He said.
Going bust was not an option, but aiming for instant success wasnât easy either. He understood the principle that the rougher the seas, the more costly the fish, but he wasnât willing to take that gamble.
Gambling was something only those with nothing left to lose would do.
Success could be achieved slowly, so there was no need to take unnecessary risks. Whether it was the sensitivity of the subject matter, the audienceâs acceptance, or considering the size of the company as a whole.
You canât become fat with just one bite; itâs wise to be cautious.
âDo you have a script?â
âNo.â
âWhat about funds? Have you assembled a team?â Gan Wenchang looked incredulous, as if to say, youâre bound to lose money.
âIâll be busy starting next month, how could I possibly have time to deal with all that?â Xu Qingyan held back some information, knowing it would not look good to say he was juggling multiple tasks.
âRight.â
