Chapter 6: Chapter 6: The Voice

Leo awoke with a start, the morning light filtering through his curtains more blinding than usual. He groaned and sat up, feeling a strange discomfort in his body that made it hard to settle back into the blanket. His mind lingered on the unsettling changes from the previous day, the taunts from Kyle, and the growing sense of something being off.

Dragging himself out of bed, Leo hesitated before heading to the bathroom, bracing himself for whatever new surprise awaited him. When he finally forced himself to look in the mirror, he gasped. His reflection was startlingly different. His hair now fell in soft, loose waves to his shoulders, its texture smooth and silky. His face looked even more feminine, with rounded cheeks, fuller lips, and bright, almond-shaped eyes that sparkled with a curious clarity.

"What is happening to me?" he muttered, his voice cracking. He ran a hand over his cheek, noting the absence of stubble and the softness of his skin. His gaze traveled down to his chest, where the hoodie he'd slept in clung to a distinctly feminine shape. His waist had narrowed, and his hips curved gently, accentuating the changes that had progressed far beyond what he could rationalize.

"Well, good morning, sunshine!" an unfamiliar, feminine, cheerful voice chimed in his head.

Leo blinked, startled. "Who said that?" he demanded, looking around the bathroom in confusion.

"Just little old me," the voice replied with a playful lilt. "You seem surprised. Weren't expecting a chat this early, huh?"

Leo's eyes widened. He looked back at his reflection, half-expecting it to start talking to him. "Am I... hearing things?"

"Nope, just me," the voice said, its tone light and teasing. "So, how do you like the new look? Pretty spiffy, right?"

Leo stared at himself, his heart pounding. "Who are you? What's happening to me?"

"Oh, you know," the voice continued breezily, "just you, the true you, here to keep you company. And about your look—don't you think it's kinda cute? I mean, look at those eyes! Absolutely dazzling!"

Leo shook his head, gripping the sink. "This can't be happening. I'm going crazy."

"Crazy? Nah, just having a little makeover," the voice said with a chuckle. "I mean, change can be fun! Think of it as an upgrade."

Leo's thoughts whirled. The voice was so distinct, so full of personality. It was almost like having a conversation with someone else entirely. "You're not real," he insisted, trying to keep his voice steady. "You're just in my head."

"Of course I'm in your head," the voice replied, sounding amused. "Where else would I be? Besides, what's so bad about a little company? We're in this together, after all."

Leo felt a shiver run down his spine. "In this together? What does that even mean?"

"It means," the voice said with a playful tone, "that maybe it's time to roll with the punches. Embrace the new you! It's not like you can stop it, right?"

Leo looked back at his reflection, feeling a mixture of fear and bewilderment. The face staring back at him was both familiar and foreign, a strange blend of his old self and this new, feminized version. The voice in his head continued to chatter cheerfully, adding to the surrealness of the moment.

"Oh, come on," the voice teased, "give it a chance. You might find you actually like some of the changes. I mean, those lips! Perfect for selfies!"

Leo felt a bubble of laughter rise in his throat, despite himself. "Selfies? Really? This isn't some makeover show!"

"Who says it can't be?" the voice quipped back. "Life's too short to be serious all the time. Besides, I think you're rocking the look."

Leo shook his head, a reluctant smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "This is so weird. I can't believe I'm actually talking to a voice in my head."

"Weird is good!" the voice declared brightly. "Embrace the weird! It's what makes life interesting."

Leo sighed, pulling on a hoodie and jeans. The clothes felt strange against his altered body, but they were the best he could do to hide the changes. "I have to get through the day without anyone noticing. Any brilliant ideas on how to do that?"

"If you have to hide how pretty we are, layer up and keep your head down," the voice advised cheerfully. "But remember, no matter what happens, you've got this. You're more adaptable than you think."

Leo glanced at his reflection one last time, the voice's words echoing in his mind. Despite the strangeness of the situation, the playful tone and light-hearted banter somehow made the ordeal feel slightly less terrifying. "Thanks, I guess," he muttered, pulling his hood up and heading out the door.

"Anytime!" the voice chirped. "And remember, if you need a pep talk, I'm always here. Literally. Always. I'm in your head."

Leo couldn't help but chuckle softly as he stepped into the hallway. Maybe he was losing his mind, but at least the voice in his head had a sense of humor. As he made his way to school, he tried to focus on the advice: layer up, keep his head down, and just get through the day. With any luck, he could avoid drawing too much attention and figure out what was happening to him before things got even weirder.

"Look at you, Mr. Mysterious," the voice quipped as he pulled his hood tighter over his head. "Trying to stay incognito? Very James Bond."

Leo rolled his eyes, his hands stuffed deep into his pockets. "I'm just trying to get through the day without anyone noticing," he muttered under his breath, feeling the eyes of passersby on him. He couldn't shake the paranoia that everyone could see the changes.

"Relax! You look fine," the voice reassured him. "Honestly, no one's paying that much attention. Except maybe that cute guy from Math. Did you see him checking you out?"

"Will you just be quiet?" Leo hissed, glancing around nervously. He couldn't believe he was having a conversation with his own head.

"Okay, okay, just trying to lighten the mood," the voice replied, sounding amused. "But seriously, you should try opening up a bit. Maybe make a friend or two. It wouldn't hurt."

Leo groaned inwardly as he reached his first class. He kept his head down, slipping into his seat and hoping to remain invisible. The day dragged on, with the voice offering a running commentary on everything from his teachers' fashion choices to the quality of the cafeteria food.

"I'm telling you, those mashed potatoes look like glue," the voice remarked during lunch. "Maybe give them a pass?"

Leo pushed his tray away, his appetite gone. "This is ridiculous," he muttered. "Why are you even here?"

"To keep you company, of course!" the voice said cheerfully. "And because you're way more interesting than you think. Plus, you're going through a lot right now. Everyone needs a friend, even if it's just a voice in your head."

Leo sighed, feeling the weight of the day pressing down on him. The voice was right—he was going through something major, and the isolation was making it worse. But the idea of opening up to anyone, even the voice, seemed impossible.

The afternoon passed in a blur of whispered commentary and awkward encounters. Leo did his best to avoid attention, but the voice kept pushing him to interact, to engage with the world around him.

"That guy over there looks friendly," the voice suggested during gym class. "Why not strike up a conversation?"

"Because I'm trying to hide," Leo whispered back, ducking into the locker room. The changes to his body made gym class a nightmare he couldn't face. He opted for a spot on the bench, pretending to be engrossed in his phone until the period ended.

By the time the final bell rang, Leo was exhausted. He shuffled out of his last class, his mind buzzing with the voice's persistent encouragement. As he headed toward the exit, Kyle caught up with him, blocking his path with a grin.

"Hey, partner," Kyle said, a playful gleam in his eye. "I need your number. We've got to coordinate for this project, right?"

"Ooh, he's getting your number," the voice chimed in, sounding delighted. "He's kinda hot, don't you think? This could be interesting!"

Leo flushed, his hands tightening into fists. "Will you just shut up?" he snapped, forgetting for a moment that the voice wasn't visible to anyone else.

Kyle raised an eyebrow, looking both amused and confused. "Whoa, easy there. I didn't realize asking for your number was such a big deal. You seem kinda... distracted today."

Leo took a deep breath, trying to calm down. "Sorry, it's been a weird day," he said, fumbling with his phone. He didn't want to give Kyle his number, but he also couldn't see a way around it. Reluctantly, he handed over his phone.

Kyle quickly added his number and handed it back. "Thanks. So, we need to work on this project. Where should we meet? My dad's home, so that's a definite no."

Leo's mind raced. The last thing he wanted was Kyle anywhere near his room, with its gaming setup and reminders of Luna. "Not my place either," he said quickly. "How about we go to a café or something? There's one near the school."

Kyle shrugged. "Sounds good to me. Lead the way."

Leo nodded, relieved to have avoided bringing Kyle into his private world. As they walked to the café, the voice in his head continued its commentary, sounding almost gleeful at the prospect of spending more time with Kyle.

"This is great! A little coffee date. So romantic!" the voice teased.

"Can you not?" Leo muttered under his breath, earning a curious glance from Kyle.

"What's that?" Kyle asked, looking intrigued.

"Nothing," Leo said quickly, shaking his head. "Just... talking to myself."

Kyle smirked. "You're an odd one, Leo. But hey, I guess that makes this project more interesting."

Leo's heart pounded as they entered the café and found a table near the back. He pulled out his notebook and laptop, trying to focus on the project and ignore the voice's persistent commentary.

"Just saying, he's really cute," the voice whispered. "Maybe this project won't be so bad after all."

Leo grit his teeth, determined to get through the meeting without any more outbursts. He had enough to deal with already—the last thing he needed was the voice in his head complicating things even further.

As they started working, Kyle's casual chatter and occasional jokes made the situation feel almost normal. For a moment, Leo managed to push aside the fears and anxieties swirling inside him. But the voice was always there, a constant reminder that his life was far from ordinary, and things were only going to get more complicated.

"You're doing great," the voice said encouragingly. "Just keep going. You'll figure it out. We'll figure it out together."

Leo sighed, trying to focus on the task at hand. The day had been a rollercoaster of emotions and confusion, but at least he wasn't facing it alone—even if his only companion was a mysterious voice inside his own mind.
