Chapter 2: Chapter 2: A Choice for Freedom

A Duke's Fragile Love ✔️Words: 6043

The grand ballroom sparkled with opulence, its crystal chandeliers casting fragmented rainbows over the crowd of nobles. Laughter and chatter filled the air as Jungkook entered, his heart pounding in his chest. He clutched the edges of his borrowed cloak, the fabric slightly too large for his slender frame.

“This is it,” he whispered to himself. “If I fail, I’ll have no choice but to run away and risk everything.”

He scanned the room, his gaze falling on Duke Kim Taehyung. The man stood near the far end of the hall, a commanding presence that made even the most confident nobles hesitate. His dark, tailored suit hugged his broad shoulders perfectly, and his sharp eyes seemed to pierce through anyone who dared approach him.

Jungkook swallowed hard. “The demon Duke,” he murmured, recalling the rumors. “A man with no heart... but my only hope.”

As he took a tentative step forward, whispers began to ripple through the crowd.

“Isn’t that the second son of the Jeon family?”

“What’s he doing here? He’s hardly of any importance.”

“Probably here for his sister’s sake. She’s the real prize of their family.”

Jungkook ignored the comments, his focus solely on Taehyung. His hands trembled slightly, but he clenched them into fists to steady himself.

Finally, he reached the Duke. Taehyung turned his head, his expression unreadable as he looked down at the smaller man.

“Who are you?” Taehyung asked, his deep voice sending a shiver down Jungkook’s spine.

“I... My name is Jeon Jungkook,” he said, bowing deeply. “I have a proposition for you, Your Grace.”

Taehyung raised an eyebrow. “A proposition? From someone like you?”

Jungkook’s cheeks flushed, but he straightened his posture. “Yes. I am aware of your... reputation, and I know you have no interest in a traditional marriage. I’m here to offer a mutually beneficial arrangement.”

The murmurs around them grew louder, but Taehyung silenced them with a single glance. He stepped closer to Jungkook, his towering frame almost intimidating.

“Speak,” he commanded.

Jungkook met his gaze, his voice steady despite his racing heart. “I have a year and a half to live.”

Taehyung’s eyes narrowed. “And why should that matter to me?”

“Because I can give you something no one else will,” Jungkook replied. “A marriage with no expectations, no strings attached. I don’t care about love or status. I just want a chance to live out my remaining time in peace, away from my family.”

Taehyung tilted his head, intrigued. “And what do I gain from this... arrangement?”

Jungkook hesitated for a moment, then said, “Freedom. I’ve heard the rumors about you and your... lover. Marrying me would allow you to avoid the pressures of a noble marriage while continuing your personal life as you see fit. In return, I ask only for a place to live quietly and without interference.”

The crowd gasped audibly at Jungkook’s boldness. A young noblewoman nearby whispered, “He’s practically offering himself as a pawn. How pathetic.”

Taehyung ignored them, his gaze fixed on Jungkook. For a long moment, he said nothing, and the tension in the room became almost unbearable. Then, to everyone’s surprise, he smirked.

“You’re either incredibly brave or incredibly foolish,” Taehyung said, his tone laced with amusement.

“Perhaps both,” Jungkook admitted. “But I mean every word.”

Taehyung studied him, his expression unreadable once more. Then he extended his hand.

“Very well, Jeon Jungkook. I accept your proposal.”

Gasps and murmurs erupted throughout the ballroom. Jungkook felt a wave of relief wash over him, though he knew this was only the beginning.

Taehyung leaned closer, his voice low enough that only Jungkook could hear. “I’ll send for you tomorrow. If you change your mind, now’s your chance.”

“I won’t,” Jungkook said firmly.

The next morning, Jungkook stood before his family, their expressions a mix of shock and disbelief.

“You... married him?” his father roared, slamming his fist on the table.

“Yes,” Jungkook said calmly, though his hands trembled behind his back. “Duke Kim Taehyung is my husband now.”

His mother’s face twisted in anger. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done? You’ve ruined your sister’s chances! She was supposed to marry into a powerful family, not you!”

Hyeri scoffed, crossing her arms. “As if Taehyung would ever love you. He probably only agreed out of pity.”

Jungkook’s heart ached at their words, but he refused to let them see his pain. “It doesn’t matter. I’ve made my choice, and I won’t return to this house.”

His father sneered. “You think you can just leave? We own you, Jungkook. Don’t forget that.”

“I am no longer a part of this family,” Jungkook said, his voice firm. “I’m leaving with my husband today.”

As he turned to leave, his mother shouted, “Don’t you dare show your face here again!”

Jungkook paused at the door, glancing back at them one last time. “Don’t worry. I won’t.”

Later that day, Jungkook stood outside the Jeon estate, a single suitcase in hand. Taehyung’s carriage awaited him, its black-and-gold design gleaming in the sunlight.

Taehyung stepped out, his expression unreadable as always. “Are you ready?”

“Yes,” Jungkook said, his voice steady despite the whirlwind of emotions inside him.

Taehyung opened the carriage door, gesturing for Jungkook to enter. As the carriage began to move, Jungkook glanced back at the house he had called home for so many years.

“Do you regret it?” Taehyung asked, breaking the silence.

Jungkook turned to him, a small smile on his lips. “No. For the first time in my life, I feel free.”

Taehyung regarded him for a moment, then nodded. “Good. You’ll need that courage for what lies ahead.”

Jungkook leaned back against the seat, letting out a long breath. Though he didn’t know what the future held, for the first time, he felt a glimmer of hope.
