The following days settled into a steady rhythm for Jungkook. Each morning began with breakfast shared with Taehyung, followed by hours in the study where they worked side by side. Though Taehyung was often quiet, he never failed to include Jungkook in discussions, encouraging his input. Slowly but surely, Jungkook began to feel less like a stranger in the mansion.

This morning was no different—until an unexpected visitor arrived.

---

Jungkook was carefully sorting through estate reports when a loud knock echoed through the study. Taehyung glanced up from his desk, his expression instantly guarded.

“Enter,” he called.

The door swung open to reveal a young woman with striking features and an air of entitlement. Jungkook’s stomach twisted in recognition. It was his older sister, Soojin.

“Your Grace,” she said with a practiced curtsy, though her sharp gaze flickered to Jungkook. “I hope I’m not interrupting.”

“You are,” Taehyung replied bluntly, leaning back in his chair.

Soojin’s confident demeanor faltered for a moment before she recovered. “I came to visit my dear sibling. It’s been too long, hasn’t it, Jungkook?”

Jungkook stood awkwardly, unsure how to respond. “Soojin... what are you doing here?”

She ignored his question and turned back to Taehyung. “I must admit, Your Grace, we were surprised to hear about your sudden marriage. I came to congratulate you both personally.”

Taehyung’s eyes narrowed. “How thoughtful of you.”

Soojin’s smile tightened. “Jungkook must feel so fortunate to have caught the attention of someone like you. He’s always been... unremarkable, but perhaps marriage will change that.”

Jungkook flinched at her words, but Taehyung’s expression darkened. “Careful, Lady Soojin,” he said, his voice like steel. “You’re speaking about my spouse.”

Soojin’s eyes widened in surprise, but she quickly masked it with a forced laugh. “Of course, I meant no offense. I’m simply... protective of my brother.”

Taehyung stood, his imposing presence filling the room. “If your concern for Jungkook is genuine, perhaps you should leave him in peace.”

Soojin’s smile faltered again, but she gave a hasty curtsy. “I see. I won’t take up any more of your time.” She turned to Jungkook, her voice softening. “Do visit the family soon, little brother. We miss you.”

Jungkook didn’t reply, his throat tight with emotion.

---

As soon as she was gone, Taehyung turned to Jungkook. “Are you all right?”

Jungkook nodded quickly, though his trembling hands betrayed him. “I’m fine. She just... surprised me, that’s all.”

Taehyung crossed the room and placed a gentle hand on Jungkook’s shoulder. “You don’t have to lie to me.”

Jungkook looked up, his eyes glistening. “It’s just... she always knows how to make me feel small.”

Taehyung’s jaw tightened. “You’re not small, Jungkook. You’re stronger than you think.”

Jungkook managed a small smile, touched by Taehyung’s words. “Thank you.”

---

Later that evening, Jungkook found himself unable to sleep. He wandered out to the garden, hoping the cool night air would calm his restless mind.

He wasn’t expecting to find Taehyung there, sitting on a stone bench beneath a canopy of stars.

“Couldn’t sleep either?” Taehyung asked without looking up.

Jungkook shook his head and sat down beside him. For a moment, they sat in silence, the only sound the rustle of leaves in the breeze.

“Do you regret coming here?” Taehyung asked suddenly.

Jungkook glanced at him in surprise. “No. It’s hard sometimes, but... being here feels like a second chance.”

Taehyung turned to him, his gaze searching. “You deserve that chance, Jungkook. Don’t let anyone make you feel otherwise.”

Jungkook’s chest tightened at the sincerity in Taehyung’s voice. “You’re kinder than people say.”

Taehyung’s lips quirked into a faint smile. “Don’t let that get out. It’ll ruin my reputation.”

Jungkook laughed softly, the tension in his chest easing. For the first time in years, he felt like someone truly saw him—not as a burden or a disappointment, but as a person worthy of care and respect.

“Thank you, Taehyung,” he said quietly.

Taehyung looked at him, his expression unreadable. “You don’t have to thank me. Just... be yourself.”

As they sat together beneath the stars, Jungkook felt a flicker of hope. Maybe, just maybe, this life would be more than he had ever dreamed.
