Chapter 3: Mage and Werewolf Ranks

The Mage & His AlphaWords: 11066

This page will give information about the different ranks in Werewolf Packs and the hierarchy of Mages.

Werewolves:

Alpha- the leader of the pack. They protect the pack, keep it in order, and defend it against attacks from other packs and Rouges. In the case of Lucas, he's protecting his pack from Mages after his mate. The most powerful Alpha in the world is the Werewolf representative in the High Council of the Supernatural. Most Alphas are males, but there are female Alphas.

Luna/Second Alpha- The peace makers of a pack. They keep the pack in peace and they are always there to help pack members. The Luna/Second Alpha of a pack also makes sure that the Alpha doesn't let their position and power go to their head by keeping them balanced mentally.

Beta- the second in command in a pack. They lead the pack when the Alpha is unable to for a period of time, or take over if an Alpha dies and has no heir, or if the Alpha becomes a Rouge.

Delta- the third in rank to Alphas and Betas. Deltas are werewolves in training for the Beta position. Deltas do not have the authority to call large or medium hunts like Betas and Alphas. They can take over the Beta position if the former Beta steps down, is removed from their rank, moves to a different pack, or changes rank, but only at the Alpha's request.

Salutary- the herbal werewolves, or doctors. They heal and care for the sick and injured. They don't have magic or special powers, only special herbs and medicines from resources.

Sentinel- these werewolves ensure that the pack is safe by patrolling the territory and watching the movement of their surroundings. They are responsible for making sure no intruders enter the territory. They also have the responsibility to greet any new visitors and learn where they are from and why they are there. Being in that position, the Sentinel must be sure that the visitors have good intentions as well. If a Sentinel is not present, that duty goes to any adult pack members. Sentinels also make sure that no fights break out in the pack and that the members keep out of trouble. After the warning, the Sentinel may penalize for the aggressiveness if it is continued, and may report to the Beta or Alpha for them to handle.

Elder- these werewolves hold great knowledge and experience in Werewolf Packs. They could've been as high ranks as an Alpha or Beta, and most are older members who decide that the pack is their final resting place. An Elder's option is greatly respected throughout a pack, and they are advisors to the Alphas and Betas. They are asked to be role models to everyone, the Alpha, Beta, pups, Omegas, new visitors, and common Werewolves. They express maturity with their thoughts and actions during serious discussions and conflicts and help whenever and where ever they can, supporting the pack all the way. Elders tend to stay in the background with pack affairs however.

Hunters- these Werewolves who are exceptionally skilled in hunting and traking down prey. The Hunters make sure that the pack has an abundance of food After large hunts, the lead hunter will alert the pack of the food available. Hunters lead the hunts along with the Alpha and/or Beta, directing the members on when it is their turn to charge at the prey. Two titles of hunter are the ambusher and tracker. These titles are given to those ranked hunters that are exceptionally skilled with certain hunting techniques.

Scouts- Scouts are responsible for warning the pack of dangerous territory outside the clearing, if any. Scouts are mainly werewolves known by neighboring packs and visit around often. They stay in touch with other packs and keep friendly relations. They are to report any important changes to the Alpha and beta. For example: if a new pack is formed, scouts are to find out who is the Alpha or Alphas and if the pack is peaceful. Another change includes the banishment of a certain Werewolf from a pack; scouts are to find out who was banished from where and why. This job is important for other packs to stay in alliance and in understanding with another and to ensure the safety.

Guardians- A wolf that shows interest and skill in caring for weakened pack members. They also watch over the older or ill Werewolves of the pack. The caretaker of the pack ensures when any Werewolf is wounded, they recover properly not putting too much stress on their wounds. They serve as a support unit, and try to keep the pack in a healthy state. If they feel a Werewolf is not strong or rested enough to hunt, they are to inform the Alpha, Beta, or Hunter. Care taking does not mean healing; its means helping to survive, to watch over and make sure one does not further hurt themselves. A caretaker has to be stern to the wounded. Many Werewolves will insist they are fine. A good caretaker needs to know what injuries are serious and what injuries can heal on their own. They need to make sure a wounded Werewolf does not over exert itself. They need to be firm in having the wolf rest.

Omegas and Pups- The Omega of the pack is 2nd lowest ranking werewolf. The Omega is usually a young werewolf that is very new to pack life and still learning, a wolf that has been lowered in rank due to wrong actions, or a re-evaluated werewolf (one who left the pack once and was accepted back into the pack at a later date). They are mostly born with the rank however. They are usually given the responsibilities of "puppy-sitter," watching over the pups during group hunts and making sure they don't wander into the forest. With the Omega always watching over the pups, they sometimes teach the way of the pack and the hierarchy. They explain to the pups what is right and wrong, or safe and dangerous. Pups while low in rank have many social freedoms; their antics are tolerated by most of the members.

Rouges- Rogues are Werewolves that have either been kicked out of their pack or left on their own free will. Rogues don't have a set appearance apart from in their wolf form, they have long fur. They also have a bad odour radiating from their bodies. Rogues can be good or bad. In some cases they are the reason for deaths. They might kill for vengeance. Or just because. Some Rogues are good. They don't intend on hurting other packs or people. They just generally want to live on their own. These types of Rogue wolves are usually called lone wolves. When wolves are classified as Rouges, they are not protected by any laws, so they can be killed easily, even if they are good Rouges.

Mages:

Apostates- the lowest rank among the Mages. Apostates are mages who are not part of any Mage Clan and are thus considered "Lone mages." There are two main types of apostates: hedge mages and general apostates, who were never part of a Clan, and rogue mages, who have fled from their Clan against the will of their First Enchanter. Mages can become apostates by banishment from their First Enchanters though.

Apprentices-

The second lowest rank is apprentice, and usually Clans have many of them. They are students that train in preparation for their Harrowing, a secret rite of passage within the Clans, and they train hard in preparing for this test but never know what it entails until the time comes for them to take it. To do this, they train under enchanters and it is the enchanters that decide when their apprentice is ready for the Harrowing.Apprentices are taken to their Harrowing without warning and can have an age range of teenage years to early adulthood when taking the test. Those who succeed in the Harrowing become mages while those who fail are never heard from again. Apprentices do get the choice to become Tranquil instead of undergoing the Harrowing, and those who are deemed too weak to even attempt the Harrowing are made Tranquil outright.

Mage- Once a student passes their Harrowing, they are a Mage. They are required to live in the Clan and can only have freedoms with the First Enchanter's permission. Their daily lives and duties vary depending on which Clan they live in.

Enchanters- Enchanters are mages that decided to specialize in a particular field of study. They also tutor apprentices and prepare them for their Harrowings. They are the ones who decide when an apprentice is ready to undergo the Harrowing as well. Those that become Enchanters get to join one of the Fraternities of Enchanters, which include the Aequitarians, Isolationists, Libertarians, Loyalists, and Lucrosians. Basically, they are political parties and determine policies for Clans. The dominant faction is the Aequitarians, which believe that Mages should dedicate themselves to using their abilities ethically and responsibly. The Isolationists want to separate mages from civilization so that they can use magic without the scrutiny of non-magical people. Libertarians want the Clans to be self-regulating without the High Council's involvement. Loyalists are dedicated to the High Council. Lastly, Lucrosians care mostly about accumulating wealth and having the fewest number of members.

Senior Enchanters- Senior Enchanter is a title awarded to the most experienced Mages within a Clan. They have many duties, from assisting First Enchanters to mentoring Enchanters and helping them tutor Apprentices. To become a Senior Enchanter, one typically requires sponsorship from another Senior Enchanter. Within a Clan, there tends to just be a small council of Senior Enchanters. Like regular Enchanters, Senior Enchanters also tend quite to be active in the various political fraternities.

First Enchanter- A First Enchanter is the head of a Clan, meaning there is only one per Clan. They serve as an ambassador between other Supernaturals and Mages and are often seen a parental figure to the Apprentices. The position is for life unless the First Enchanter decides to retire or appoint someone new into the position, while it is mostly passed down father to son, or mother to daughter, or father to daughter,  or mother to son. They are not always chosen for their power, as they need to have an edge in diplomacy most of all. First Enchanters hold a lot of power, as their permission is needed for a Mage to leave the territory, for a Mage to be made Tranquil, and for an Apprentice to be summoned for their Harrowing. They also decide the price of the goods and services that their Clan provides while having control over the Clan's finances. It is typical for First Enchanters to have meetings in secretive places to elect a new Grand Enchanter every couple of years. They also can banish Mages from their Clan and make them Apostates.

Grand Enchanter- The highest rank within the Mage Hierarchy is the Grand Enchanter, who gets elected from among the First Enchanters by the College of Enchanters. The Grand Enchanter interacts more with the Council than all other ranks, as they are the Representative for the Mages within the High Council of the Supernatural. They oversee the interactions of the First Enchanters when they come to have their meetings as well. The current Grand Enchanter is Grand Enchanter Fiona.
