Chapter 37: Christmas Special: Rivers & Rings

The Mage & His AlphaWords: 14704

AN: This is a scenario where book 2 never took place, and it takes place about a year after book 1, and Max gets pregnant around July. Keep that in mind. Oh, and the Mages from Max's old clan lives with the Spirit Lake Pack.

Another note- if the song originally put into the media slot does not load, which I'm sure it won't, Max is singing "River (It's Coming on Christmas)", by Joni Mitchell, but Ellie Goulding does a cover on it. Max is singing the Ellie version. Ok, enjoy!

Max's POV

I looked out the window and smiled. It was Christmas Eve for the Spirit Lake Pack, and the whole place was buzzing with excitement and anticipation as we got the last-minute touches on decorations and for the Christmas feast. We were expecting some snow tomorrow, which would make our Christmas even more magical. A white Christmas was exactly what we needed to brighten this pack up.

I turned back to the living room, where I was in charge of setting up the Christmas lights. I had borrowed Lucas's phone to play some Christmas music, and I was singing softly to a festive tune. Well, technically, I had stolen his phone, but he didn't mind. He knew I loved his music collection. He just didn't know how much I loved his phone too. Don't tell him that, hehe.

"Mason!" I called out to my son, who was running around the house with his friends. He came to a halt and ran over to me, his clover green eyes shining with joy. I ruffled his hair and gave him a hug. "Could you go get your father, please? I need his help with the lights."

"Ok, Mama!" he said, hugging me back. He dashed off to find Lucas, who was probably in his office, working on some pack business. He was always so busy and responsible, that man. But that's why I loved him so much... among other reasons. His endless amount of sweetness, his dashing smile that makes me go weak at the knees, and his dominant, sexy nature when we are alone together.

Now, you might be wondering why I needed Lucas to help me with the lights, when I could easily use a bit of magic and do it myself. Well, there was only one logical answer: I loved watching him do the things only tall people could do, like reaching high shelves or hanging decorations. He was so big and strong, and I was so small and cute. We were a perfect match. Plus, I was around five months pregnant, so he always helped me whenever I asked him to, because he didn't want me to "strain myself." That man... I don't know what I'd do without him most days.

I was admiring the string of lights in my hands, when I felt a warm and familiar touch on my shoulder. I shivered as mating sparks coursed through my body, and I looked up to see Lucas standing behind me. He had a devilish smirk on his lips, and his blue eyes sparkled with mischief.

"Hey, beautiful," he said, wrapping his arms around me and rubbing my baby bump with tenderness. "Need a hand?" I giggled and began to purr softly, feeling his rough hands slide over my soft skin.

"I could use one, thank you," I replied, giggling again as I turned my body to face Lucas properly. He grinned, thinking I was going to give him a hug. Instead, just as we both leaned in, I handed him the string of lights, grinning at his confused look. "Could you please hang the lights up above the window? I can't reach it." I gave him my puppy eyes, which eventually won him over as he shook his head with amusement.

"You're lucky you're cute," Lucas said, stretching the lights out to their full length. He reached up to the top of the window with ease, tying both ends of the string of lights to the little hooks that were set up for the lights. Once he was done, which it took less than a minute, he turned to me and grinned like the Chesire Cat. "Well? I believe I deserve a reward for helping my precious Whiteout. Don't you think so?" Lucas crossed his arms, that grin still on his face as he wiggled his eyebrows. Deciding to tease him instead of giving him what he wanted, I stood on my tippy toes and gave him a quick peck on the cheek.

"There you go," I said, smirking as Lucas pretended to act hurt before chuckling. He pulled me close, and I allowed him to, deciding to give him a proper reward. His hand met the back of my head softly, as we both leaned in for a proper kiss. The kiss was both passionate and sweet, neither of us wanting to pull away for a second. Lucas growled softly, causing me to whimper in response, before we both pulled away to breathe. Gods, Lucas was such a good kisser. He reached up and cupped my cheek, gently caressing it with his thumb. I leaned into his touch with a purr, his hand nice and warm on my skin.

"Now that, was a nice reward babe," Lucas teased, making me giggle at his childish antics.

"You're welcome," I replied, a silly grin still on my face. "Now sadly, I have more preparations to look over, and YOU, have some more office work to finish up. Meet back here in a bit?" I held his hand softly, and I heard Winter come out and whimper a little bit. He also didn't want to leave Lucas, but we both had some work left to do. After a final kiss, and one sad wave later, Lucas headed back to his office, while I continued to help decorate the pack house.

Lucas' POV-

"Looks like it's all coming together," I mumbled, looking at the diamond ring in my hand. Now you might be wondering; why on Earth do I have a diamond ring? Well, the answer is quite simple.

I am going to ask Max to marry me tomorrow.

He was, quite literally, the one for me. He works harder than I do most days, keeping Mason in check, helping pack members around the house, and helping out his fellow Mages remain comfortable. When we merged our pack and clan together, it took some time to get everyone assimilated to life living together. Tensions were high, and there were fights on the brink of happening. But Max... he was the shining star and brought peace to both sides. He showed a compassion that I hadn't seen before, which only made my heart swell. He's just an incredible person, and I always thank the Moon Goddess every day to show my appreciation for her. Plus, he works harder than me because he is carrying my child, something that makes me feel like nothing else matters but my growing family. But going back to the ring, I looked down and watched it sparkle like a hundred little stars as the sunlight reflecting off the diamonds.

I had his ring custom made, just for him. It was a titanium ring with a wolf paw print adorned with diamonds, with my initials etched into the inside of the ring in gold letters. It took a few weeks to get the ring made and get it delivered. The hardest part however was keeping it a secret from Max, since I wanted to surprise him with the ring. Luckily, I had managed to keep this a secret and the ring came in today. I grinned and placed the ring back in the box, sitting it in the secret compartment in my desk. Oh Max... I hope you will say yes?

~The next morning, on Christmas Day~

3rd Person POV-

The pack house awoke the next morning with pure excitement, the little ones running around frantically as they tried to get to the Christmas tree in the living room. Parents had to step in however, so each child, and adult, could get their presents properly. Mason, not surprisingly, was the wildest one out of all the children, for not even Lucas could calm the crazy boy down. Soon however, presents were opened, and thanks were given to everyone, as all the pack members had chipped in to help get gifts for the little ones. Lucas however had one present in his pocket, that was reserved for Max, and Max only. The Alpha planned to propose to Max tonight when everyone was relaxing after another wonderful Christmas.

Soon it was lunch time, and the feast was ready to serve. Everyone gathered outside where the big table was, families joining the chaos of trying to find a spot for their members. But given there were many families in the pack, it was an interesting sight to watch. Eventually, Max and a few other Mages conjured up more big tables and chairs, so everyone had a place to sit. The massive feast was brought out by the pack cooks, who placed dish after dish onto the tables. Turkeys the size mini fridges, mountains of mashed potatoes, casseroles that looked like they were made for giants, and desserts that were stacked higher than Lucas' head. Everyone dug in, happily chatting away about New Years and their plans for the upcoming year. It was heart-warming, and everyone felt the joy of being together.

Lucas' POV-

After an hour or so of eating and stuffing ourselves full of food, everyone felt bloated. Max, Mason, and I retired to the pack house living room. We laid down on the couches, a few pack members coming into the living room as well. We talked and laughed for a little bit. I wondered where Sam was, but I then remembered he was spending Christmas with Emma's family this year and wouldn't be back until after New Years. I was happy for him though. He needed time away from being a Beta and needed to focus on his mate. How could I deny him that, as his best friend?

Max latched onto me some more, feeling needy for attention, to which I happily began giving him kisses and little bits of attention. My hand rested carefully on his ever-growing baby bump, as I wanted to feel our little one kick around. Soon after, I felt a tiny kick, causing Max and I to both laugh softly. "I'm so excited."

"I am too," Max replied after a moment, as he was getting sleepy. I chuckled as he let out a cute little yawn, then rubbed his sweet little eyes. I held my mate close, making sure he was comfortable with his baby bump. My eyes also began drooping, the large lunch we had starting to take its sleepy effect. Soon, after we shared a quick kiss, Max and I closed our eyes, and fell into a soft sleep in each other's arms. The pack members in the room with us tossed blankets on us and left us be while we rested.

~Later that Night~

Max's POV-

It was now nearing Mason's regular bedtime of 8:30pm, but since it was Christmas, Lucas and I decided he could stay up until he fell asleep. The silly boy was currently running around with a few of his friends somewhere in the large house, but we paid it no mind. The fireplace in the living room was roaring with beautiful flames. Lucas and I were cuddled up on the couch, listening to some of the pack members chatting quietly, and the wood in the fire crackle and pop, which sent embers flying within the fireplace. It was really serene and had a sleep-inducing effect on me. Just as I felt myself nod off, Lucas shifted beneath me and soon I was sitting up, with Lucas getting off the couch and standing in front of me. Lucas called for everyone's attention, then dropped to one knee. My heart stopped in time. Was he...?

"Maxwell Lavellen; my sweet, darling Whiteout," Lucas began, taking my hand in his as he spoke, rubbing it tenderly with his thumb, looking at me with undeniable love and adoration. "You have been my shining star since day one. You brought me out of my dark days, and I hope I brought you out of yours. Never has someone showed me more love than you, which is why I cannot think or even imagine a world where you aren't with me. I love you, Max. I've loved you since the second I met your eyes. And now... I have one question for you." Lucas reached inside his pocket, and pulled out a jewelry box, and lifted the lid: revealing a paw print ring with the most beautiful diamonds embedded into the titanium black. "Maxwell... will you marry me?" For a few, painfully slow seconds, there was a suspenseful silence. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

I launched myself at Lucas, crying hysterically as I held him close.

"Yes! Yes, I'll marry you!" I sobbed, my happiness making me over emotional. Lucas sighed with relief and gently took my left hand and slid the ring over my ring finger. I pulled Lucas in for a kiss, and the pack members began to cheer, so loudly it was deafening. But I did not care one bit. This... this was the Christmas that would never leave my memory. I would always celebrate this day, as a day of love, and commitment to Lucas. After calming down for a while and being held by my fiancé... gods that feels so good to say; I got an idea. I saw the piano we keep in the living room, and in a swirl of white smoke, I was sitting on the bench at the piano. I gave a smile to Lucas, before I began playing my tune.

It's coming on Christmas

They're cutting down trees

They're putting up reindeer

And singing songs of joy and peace

Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on

Lucas swayed along softly as I sang, the others in the room following suit. I giggled softly and continued.

But it don't snow here

It stays pretty green

I'm gonna make a lot of money

Then I'm going to quit this crazy scene

Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on

I wish I had a river so long

I would teach my feet to fly

Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on

I made my baby cry

He tried hard to help me

You know, he put me at ease

And he loved me so naughty, made me weak in the knees

Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on

Lucas knew that second verse was about him, and he sent me a wink to let me know he got the message. I blushed beet red before I continued to sing.

I'm so hard to handle

I'm selfish and I'm sad

Now I've gone and lost the best baby that I ever had

Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on

Oh, I wish I had a river so long

I would teach my feet to fly

Oh, I wish I had a river

I could skate away on

I made my baby say goodbye

It's coming on Christmas

They're cutting down trees

They're putting up reindeer

And singing songs of joy and peace

Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on

After playing the ending chords on the piano, the pack members quietly clapped for me, which made me blush from the spotlight. Lucas was the one who made me feel extra special, as he had come right over and picked me up, holding me close as he kissed me. I kissed him back lovingly, and after a moment, we pulled away. Our eyes met, and we both smiled.

"That was the most beautiful song you've ever sang Whiteout. Thank you for singing it to me, my darling," Lucas said, gently rubbing my cheek as he cupped it. "Merry Christmas, Max. I love you."

"I love you too, Lucas. Merry Christmas," I replied, leaning into his warm touch. Tonight, would go down as the best night of our lives... well so far. A wedding would come with time, but for now, I just wanted to snuggle my Liebe. And that is exactly what I did. And we stayed glued together, until dawn approached the next morning.
