I sought out Fox as I left the cells, but before I could find him Jax ran over, âThe wolf that we grabbed from the camp, he needs you. Now.â
I went with Jax to the wolf and placed a hand on his forehead. He was weak, I searched his body for what was keeping him from waking. I found the flecks of silver left in his system, but finding the wolfsbane I could smell on him was more difficult. âJax, go get me a clean, empty syringe.â
He nodded and ran in search of the syringe. I moved to the dragon who hadnât woken up and placed my hand on her forehead. I searched her to see if I could isolate the oil better than the wolfsbane. I felt just the tiniest bit of water within the oil, but I couldnât figure out why I couldnât feel the water within the wolfsbane; it should have more water than the oil. Jax returned with a couple of syringes, âHere.â
He handed me one of the syringes and I carefully inserted it into the vein on her arm. I pulled the oil into the syringe and removed it from her arm. Her eyes fluttered open, then she startled, pulling away from me. âWho are you? Where am I?â
âMy name is Amaya. My friends and I rescued you from the hunters and brought you back to the village.â Her eyes grew wide with fear, âDonât worry. Joseph has been removed from power and will pay for what heâs done to you and all of our people. Whatâs your name?â
She looked at me sceptically, âItâs Logan. Is Finley here? Did she make it?â
I nodded, âShe met her mate. Heâs a good person who can and will look out for her.â
âHow do you know that?â She asked, eyes narrowed.
âBecause heâs my cousin and he was raised right. Plus he knows I would kick his ass if he did anything he shouldnât. All in all heâs very happy to be with her in any way she will have him.â She nodded, satisfied with my answer. âThere are some clothes for you. You guys are leaving in an hour or two for Virginia. Do you guys have anything you need to pack?â
She shook her head and looked at Claire and Johnny who were tearing into the food. âThey might though. Iâm not sure if the clan kept anything.â
âOkay. Iâll ask around and find out for you. In the meantime can you stand?â She took my offered hand and pulled herself up, âGet something to eat, Iâll let you guys know when I know something.â
As I turned to go back to the wolf, I was hit by a small body. âAmaya!â
I handed Jax the syringe before wrapping Georgie in a tight hug, âShouldnât you be in bed?â
He giggled, âNo! Itâs too early.â
I made a show of looking up at the sky which was still colored from twilight. âAre you sure? It seems late enough to me.â
He giggled, âIt is not!â He places his head on my shoulder and breathes in, âYou smell mintier than you did earlier.â
I smiled, âThatâs because I spoke with the goddess. She told me to look out for you and that you will be a very gifted healer.â
He gasped a little, âLike my mom?â
I nodded, âJust like your mom. Do you want to try helping me with this wolf we found with the hunters?â
He nodded his head enthusiastically, making me smile. âI donât know what to do though.â
âLet me phone a friend. Sheâll be your teacher when we get home,â I said, walking over to my bag. I grabbed my satellite phone and punched in Laviâs direct line. âHey Lavi,â I said when she answered.
âWhatâs up Amaya?â
âI have a young healer here and a badly injured wolf. The wolf has a lot of wolfsbane in his system and I canât isolate it. Do you think you can help walk him through healing so we can save him?â
âWe can try. I know a few spells that should help. The main issue is if he isnât fully developed as a healer, it can backfire and hinder the growth of him as a healer. Itâs pretty rare but it is known to happen.â
âOkay hang on,â I said, pulling the phone away from my ear. âGeorgie, can you mind link your aunt to come here, please?â
He was quiet for a moment before looking up at me, âWhy?â
âIâll explain in a second, Little Dragon,â I responded, waiting for Liza to make her way over to us.
âLavi you still there?â I asked Lavi as Liza walked up to us.
âYes. Iâm still here,â she responded.
âCan you explain to Liza, Georgieâs aunt, the risks of him helping with the injured wolf?â She confirmed, so I turned to Liza, âI think Georgie can help this wolf, but I want you to understand the risks of what could potentially happen if something goes wrong. This is Lavi, our healer, sheâs going to explain everything.â
Liza nodded and took the phone from me, listening intently as Lavi explained everything to her. âAnd the risks are small or arenât things that are likely to happen?â Lavi answered her, âOkay.â Liza handed me the phone back before squatting down in front of Georgie, âGeorgie, if you do this and something goes wrong, you might not become as good a healer as you were meant to be, but that doesnât mean something will go wrong. Lavi says it doesnât happen a lot, but it does happen. Do you understand?â
Georgie nodded but before he could say anything, I caught the slightest hint of mint in the air. âI want to do it. I want to help.â
Liza blew out a breath and looked up at me with a nod, so I handed Georgie the phone. I listened as Lavi gave Georgie the instructions he needed to do to save the unknown wolf; catching Momâs scent gave me hope that Georgie would be okay. Liza grabbed my hand and I gave her hand a tight squeeze, hoping to reassure her. We watched with bated breath as Georgie quietly spoke the incantations Lavi was directing him to use. When he was done, she instructed him to hold a hand over the wolfâs body and use his magic to sense if the incantations worked.
âI think it worked,â Georgie said quietly into the phone to Lavi, who ran through what he would be feeling if it worked again. âYes.â
âIs he waking up?â Lavi asked.
Georgie looked at him, âHeâs not waking up. Did I do it wrong?â He asked dejectedly.
âNo Georgie. If he was as injured as Amaya said, he might not wake up for some time.â Lavi was quiet for a moment, âLet me talk to Amaya, Georgie.â
âWhatâs up Lavi?â
âCan you smell the wolfsbane in his system anymore?â She asked me directly.
I squatted down next to the wolf and breathed in deeply, âThereâs not even a trace. If I hadnât smelled it earlier, I would swear he hadnât been injected with wolfsbane.â
âGood,â Lavi said, blowing out a breath, âHand me back to Georgie.â
âIs he going to be okay?â Georgie asked, weakly.
I squeezed Lizaâs hand again, âGeorgie, you did so well. I couldnât have done a better job than you did.â
âI had the goddessâs help,â he admitted feebly.
âThatâs such a rare thing. You are so lucky to have a close connection with your goddess, Georgie. Never be embarrassed or doubt your ability if you are lucky enough to get help from your goddess. I would be honored to be your teacher, Georgie. I cannot wait to teach you when you get home.â
Georgie hugged Lizaâs legs before shyly responding, âThank you Lavi. Iâm excited too.â
I wrapped my arm around Lizaâs shoulders and she quickly wiped away the tears that finally overflowed. Georgie handed the phone back to me as Lavi asked for me, âThank you Lavi. Aap ek mahaan maan banane ja rahee hain.â
âMujhe aasha hai. Surakshit rahen,â she said before disconnecting.
âSo heâs going to be okay?â Jax asked. I nodded, causing Jax to kneel down and embrace Georgie, âThank you, Georgie. Youâre amazing.â
âIs he one of your friends?â Georgie asked him in a small voice.
Jax shook his head, âIâve never met him, but every life saved from the hunters is a good thing.â
âGeorgie, do you know where Connie is?â He nodded his little head, âCan you take me to her, Little Dragon? Jax, let me know when he wakes up.â
âWill do, Little Duck. Thanks again, both of you.â
